Netflix may fix Japan movie-financing dilemma: director Kawase

In the battle between Cannes and Netflix I find myself firmly on the side of Netflix.

Would love to see a rebirth of great Japanese cinema. God, I hope this happens.

For creativity to fourish, the film directors and writers have to get out from under the thumbs of a few oyajis who still expect the sempai/kohai relationships must be established. This monopoly is true for all forms of entertainment in Japan.

I have to disagree, I have enjoyed a lot of the programming on Netflix more than the recent big budget movies.

If they had invented and profit from NETFLIX they would be touting it as the best thing since Natto was invented!

Implying Netflix = creativity. They are already doing as Hollywood industry, copying all the possible Japanese movies, anime and manga.

NetFlix is doing anything wrong. They are the first entrants in a new market. There are always monopolies at the beginning when it comes to innovation. Those same companies try to profit as much as possible until the barriers are lessened. That is one of the characteristics of a product's life cycle. The problem with Japan is that of instead letting things die and allowing rebirth begin a new, they keep resuscitating the same lifeless bodies over and over.

In what way? I see Netflix offering shows that viewers and original movies that wouldn't make it on the big screen. In addition, I see them picking up shows that were popular with audience, but they were cancelled because that didn't fit into the networks new line ups. How is that stifling creativity? If anything that is the opposite.

Not entirely true - there's plenty of decent films coming out from the US. Like recent Oscar winners:

Moonlight.

Manchester by the Sea.

And many more. Sure, box office does well with the superhero flicks and the sequels etc etc. But there's always room for independents.

"Thanks" to Netflix, creativity and competition are already dying, since it is creating her own monopoly. Funny like some people here are criticizing the concert of monopoly and they are not able to see like Netflix is creating her own monopoly.

I don't see "plenty" of original and decent American movies. And I doubt Netflix can save American creativity, by creating a monopoly.

Anyway, I don't care about the American movie industry so much, since Hollywood stopped to create interesting and original movies (in my opinion), I just hope Netflix doesn't destroy other markets, that's all.
