New rules allow Japanese adult film actresses to stop sale of their videos after five years

In many ways, Japan takes an accepting, pragmatic stance when it comes to pornography. However, that’s not to say that working in the adult film industry carries no stigma, and a new rule set to go into effect next spring aims to make it easier for on-camera performers to extract themselves from the adult video industry.

Japan’s Adult Video Human Rights Organization (the successor to the Intellectual Property Promotion Association’s Adult Video Industry Reform and Promotion Advisory Committee) will be asking production and distribution companies to comply with a new guideline allowing actresses to halt the sale of adult videos they have appeared in. Actresses can exercise this option once the film has been commercially available for five years, or five years and six months after the film was recorded. Additionally, companies will also be restricted from using any of the footage in other products, such as pornography omnibus releases should an actress ask for a halt in sales.

These measures have been added to make it easier for actresses to transition out of the adult video industry and not have their reputation follow them into more chaste professional pursuits or private family life. Should an actress choose not to ask for sales to be halted, the distributor’s right to sell the film will be automatically renewed in increments of one year at a time. Adult video companies associated with the Intellectual Property Promotion Association are requested to comply with the guideline for films featuring actresses who enter into contracts from April 1, 2018 (April 1 being the start of the fiscal year at many Japanese companies).

IPPA-affiliated companies will also be asked to follow new regulations regarding contract negotiations and proceedings from Jan 1. Citing a desire to protect actresses against deception, pornographic production companies will be required to explicitly explain that “Adult video production is the filming of sexual intercourse” and “There is a risk that other people will find out about you appearing in an adult video, and there is also a risk of sexually transmitted infection.” Advocates of the new rules assert that many women enter into contracts to appear in adult videos without fully comprehending what the work entails, and so only after the actress receives a through explanation and signs separate forms of understanding and intent will production companies be allowed to enter into a contract with her to film pornographic content.

While the regulations are not government-mandated, compliance with them is the only way for films to be certified as an “appropriately made adult video” by the IPPA.

Is this open acknowledgement that pornographic films are bad or immoral?

Japan is a devoutly secular society with a supposedly open minded world view about adultery and sexual activity. Why create a statute of limitations on pornographic films? The five year rule implicitly supports the idea that pornographic videos and activities are bad, evil, immoral and sinful.

Is modern secular Japan finding sexual morality that it’s imposing on society?

The five year rule implies that the Japanese government regards pornographic videos and films as deleterious, pernicious and immoral.

Is this based on Confucius doctrine, Christian doctrine or modern feminist thinking.

fact is there is a lack of willing J men who want to do porn,

Is this really the case? How do we know this fact.

I assume because in the porn watching audience men outnumber women by far... but you still need a man to film the scenes, fact is there is a lack of willing J men who want to do porn, while there isnt a lack of willing J women, you can read anything in to that as you please!?

Misleading title.. These are not new rules.... They are guidelines that no one has to follow and are not enforceable.

@Bruce

Of course we know. Almost everyone on this site knows. But it’s a secret we’re sworn not to tell.

Interesting. I wonder if more women will do porn as a result.

Same here. Gullible yet slightly suspicious aspiring young actresses may be tempted by this new 'rule', they'll feel they're in control, just a bit of fun & easy money then it'll all be forgotten etc. Agree with the last few posters though, all smoke and mirrors. The cynic in me thinks that J porn industry knew what they were doing and just want to attract more girl next door types (fresh, innocent, kawaii but not 'too' sexy etc).

What about the male actors in porn? in Japan the women porn stars outnumber the men by far, over 10,000 porn women compared to around a couple dozen men. The men get far more exposure since they work if far more individual movies. many women do a couple of movies then its over , unless they're very popular.

So another words to lie to future employers or partners. not to mention your children, what do you say to your child if they find or are told by others that your mum was a porn star!?

Pointless. Whatever goes online, stays online – forever. exactly I know of a couple sites that have mountains of J porn and the servers arent in Japan. If you want to enter porn you just have to live with the fact that your work will be see for viewable online for as long as there is an internet.

Futility of rules like this in these digital days, as posts point out.

I also find it amazing what goes for news sometimes, not to mention that this pro-women (or whatever) ruling probably won't be adhered to anyway.

Pardon my cynicism, but it is like asking, what do adult movie rules and manufactured product inspection processes have in common? Lip-service.

Interesting. I wonder if more women will do porn as a result.

That was my impression too. It is implying women going into porn will have some semblance of control over what happens, that they can do it consequence free out of curiosity or for "easy" money. I think a lot of women with actual experience of doing porn would say that is a fallacy.

Given that industry's constant need for new recruits, the vast majority of five year old porn videos will be commercially worthless anyway. As other posters state though, that doesn't mean the images will disappear. No woman with any future ambition for job with public responsibilities should do porn expecting it will not be found. That is not how the Internet works.

I'd like to get a stab at it if it's only going to be viewable for 5 years.

Yeah, not sure anybody has any control of things in the digital age.

Their acts will live on in:

filelockers (megaupload et al)

P2P (Perfect Dark et al)

torrents
