The last three episodes were really a shame to watch, looked like "Independence Day" out there in the galaxies. Hope they return to maquetes instead of computers to make these new three to look more natural.

Has anyone actually seen a film with an original storyline in the past year?

Sure, watched Gravity a few months ago.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the new Star Wars films...

The Hobbit was an original story. Tolkein created the genre. And what other film is there like The Hobbit?

Ok, ok, some of you guys have justifiable reasons to be skeptical, but to be fair, Star Wars would have been a much better and far more entertaining film if Lucas wouldn't have directed it. Let's face it, the man is just not a good writer and I will personally never forgive him for torturing us with the whiny Jar Jar Binks If someone like Abrams or Guillermo del Toro, it might be a much better movie to watch. I want to give it a chance and if it sucks, I will the first one on JT to vent. Just food for thought, Imagine if Lucas would have directed Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit? How would that have turned out, huh?

The hobbit was written by Tolkien and many other Middle Earth books besides LOTR.

Will it still be a long long time ago?

Will it still be a long long time ago? ahh yes, a long long time ago + 30years.

@davestrousers....

Well that is the official timeline... if they come up with a completely "new" story... well. Then the Dark Side has won already

Rightly so, although I find the "mid-chlorians" idea far worse, personally. It makes the Force sound like a toothpaste ingredient. As for the "child conceived by the Force itself" nonsense...

I'd like to see an updated version of the slave Leia outfit -- on a younger actress, of course.

Makes sense. The actors involved in "Return of the Jedi" are now 30 years older. Not as many theatrical prosthetics are going to be needed to "age" them. :-)

When George Lucas was first shopping around his idea for Star Wars, he had nine outlines in chronological sequence. Twentieth Century Fox eventually agreed to fund the fourth outline which was originally titled just "Star Wars" but became "Episode IV: A New Hope" after it became apparent that there would be additional movies from the outlines. I don't know if Disney decided to base "Star Wars VII" on Lucas' seventh outline or not, but the groundwork for three additional stories after "Return of the Jedi" has been around from the very beginning.

Use the meds, Luke!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

If it is set 30 years after "Return of the Jedi"... that means it will probably be the Yuuzhan vong invation. That will also mean that the most probable characters will be Luke Skywalker Mara Jade Sky Walker Ben Skywalker

I doubt if anything from the Star Wars novels or comics will be used at all. I'd be expecting a totally different storyline with totally different characters if I were you.

@bass4funk

Lucas should have go ahead and use the footage he made in EP1... where Jar Jar Binks dies.... That was so beautiful....hehehe

Will we have purple light sabres? Someone tried to pick up my wife in the UK with a line based on that.

Yay! R2D2 is coming back. Gotta love the stupid little astro droid.

Anthony Daniels (C3P0) and Kenny Baker (R2D2) are the only actors to appear in all 6 movies so far, yet most people wouldn't recognize them on the street if they met them.

I guess movies about cop duos, car chases, superheroes, vampires and zombies have reached their saturation limit? (Please let it be true!)

All this in favour of sexy Twi'lek dancers say "Aye!". Thought so, motion carried!

Add some stud Jedi for the ladies and we're done here.

Most movies these days are barely worth watching on DVDs but I'll go to the cinema for this I guess. (Senior's discount makes it so much sweeter!)

The plot timeline and the actual film production schedule are thirty years apart? Is that a subtle ploy to get us thirtysomethings to watch a kids movie? Disney Star Wars, 'nuff said. I am more nostalgic about hearing the NPR radio version of Star Wars at age 7 or so.

While it's true that Disney mostly banks on children's movies, they have still made plenty of films for the adult audience. The pirates movies were not exactly kid friendly all the way through (opening scene where they hang a small child). Also, the original trilogy didn't have much in the way of blood and guts by today's standards, so even if Disney does go the way of not showing lots of blood, it should still be a pretty fun ride. I just hope they bring back the grittiness of the original trilogy and tone down the glitz of the new one.

Opens with Jabba the Hut's place in foreclosure/distress sale and a Jade Solo with a few friends thinking of renovation when they uncover a little droid....

Yes I'm guessing

It's Star Wars, so I'll go see it, just for that. If it bites, it bites. Whatever. I'm glad they're going to finish the series, and hopefully they don't do a terrible job. Who knows, maybe this could return Disney to their glory days? You know, when they made good movies? I, too, and cautiously optimistic. May the Force be with you all.

Its not official at all. Its part of the "expanded universe" which includes a whole bunch of books, comics, games etc. that has no bearing at all on what might happen in the films. A lot of it amounts to little more than fan fiction.

Ah, LucasFilm merchandising introduced this concept called "levels of canon" or something like that, which basically means that all the books and things are official, but not as official as the movies. I hope the spin-off stuff is completely ignored, to be honest, as it all looks pretty tripey and not worth bothering with.

Enough already with Star Wars. The first one was the only good one, and they should have stopped there.

I don't know what to think, on one side we have this produced by Disney, second is J.J. Abrams it kinda difficult to know which direction is going to take, I'm glad is not Lucas though, even if J.J. makes something like the Robotech adaptation of Japanese "Macross" with the skip of generations between the three parts (the Macross Saga, The masters, a New Generation) In this case, ep I-III are connected with IV-VI via Skywalker (like Max and Dana Sterling) so ep VII-IX can be made separately, and J.J. Does like to treat some stories as "independent"

Has anyone actually seen a film with an original storyline in the past year? Sure, a couple of days ago I saw "the flight" with Denzel Washington, and I would mention Gravity too but I got so bored with that one...

Iger did not reveal any casting news, other than to confirm the return of the robot character R2D2.

That's the only one that matters, in my opinion. ;)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As long as C3PO doesn't return it should be OK. And bring back the Wookie, please!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Disney bought it out, 'nuff said. We all know Disney loves to milk a franchise dry.

Yay! R2D2 is coming back. Gotta love the stupid little astro droid.

@HonestDictator: Tell me about it. I hear there's going to be five more Pirates of the Caribbean movies yet. Johnny Depp's gonna need a walking stick by the end of it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Fox Cloud Lelean

Bruce Willis did the Die Hard again. Not to mention Stallone. You can pretty much tell both of them need walking sticks in the movies.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

They should bring back the Darth Vader character and Harrison Ford should play him - heck, he sounds just like Darth Vader these days. And they could get Erika Sawajiri to play the new Princess! And they could get that big scruffy dog who lives in my neighborhood to play the Wookie!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yes, no more "security holograms" of people killing younglings please.

Gotta be very reserved about new Star Wars movies! Episode I -III where not well received by many Star Wars fans. I wonder if episode VII will involve the Yuuzhan Wong and Chewbacca's death.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

J.J.Abrams did a bang-up job with the Star Trek movies, this should be good. The big question is will Harrison Ford reprise his role as Han Solo ( this would be interesting ), will Mark Hamill reprise his role as Luke Skywalker ( not necessary ) and will Carrie Fisher reprise her role as Princess Leia ( not necessary! )?

"I'd like to see an updated version of the slave Leia outfit -- on a younger actress, of course."

Amen!

The well has run dry for me on "Star Wars" films. Same with Hobbits. I wish Hollywood could make some films with original storylines rather than sequels and remakes. Has anyone actually seen a film with an original storyline in the past year?

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Its pretty obvious how Star Wars will go under the Disney umbrella.. it will look a lot like the Marvel films. Entertaining films but very formulaic, including big, great-looking battles, the odd laugh etc. All of it to be churned out at a frightening pace - most likely you will see a trailer for the next film, such as a spin-off involving Boba Fett or Yoda, when you watch the main one.

They won't be bad exactly, but there'll come a time when you can't remember what its like for there to NOT be a Star Wars film on at the cinema.

Give us a break. This one died a death years ago. The only contribution it has made since The Empire Strikes Back was the introduction of the classic 'younglings' into popular culture. Four poor to average movies with just one laugh, although it was a truly hilarious moment, tells us its time to put this one to rest.

Han Solo Leia Organa-Solo Jaina Solo Jancen Solo Anakin Solo

C-3PO R2-D2

Chewbacca Lowbacca (may be...)

the New Jedi Order Admiral Gilad Pallaeon

as for governments.... the New Republic and the Imperial Remnant

May be One Sith.....

Since you know... is 30 years later...

@Daniel Neagari

Yes, I'm sure they'll use all that stuff from the Timothy Zahn novels.. I'm mean they're widely regarded as classics after all.
