NHK hoping to get Lady Gaga to appear on 'Kohaku Uta Gassen'

NHK says it is negotiating with American singer Lady Gaga, 25, to have her make a special live appearance by satellite TV on its popular New Year's Eve music program "Kohaku Uta Gassen" (Red and White Song Contest).

Lady Gaga has been in Japan for the past few days to appear on TV Asahi's "Music Station" on Friday night. She returns to the U.S. on Saturday.

On New Year's Eve, Lady Gaga is scheduled to take part in a gala countdown event in New York City. NHK is hopeful that she will be able to appear via satellite for "Kohaku," which would be mid-morning New York time.

NHK also announced Thursday that it received 1,341 costume design ideas from the public for actress Mao Inoue, who will co-host the program with pop group Arashi.

I think this show should include foreign musicians who live here.

It would be refreshing, to be included, for once.

"Gaa-Gaa" means a noise to Japanese, right?

not two but three times : Gaa-Gaa-Gaa !

Yesterday I watched her on a musical program on Japanese TV performing Born This Way. The lyrics are ridiculous. She says "God makes no mistakes". I disagree. If there is God, he made a lot of mistakes. Anyway, the performance was terrible. She and her dancers were dressed in hospital gowns, dance was terrible and she looked like a lunatic in a facility for mental people. The announcer at the end announced Lady Gaga is kawaii. o.o

By the way, do you know if she will be on the red or white team?

Lady Gaga, unlike many other foreign entertainers, has supported Japan by visiting Japan, encouraging others to visit, and raised millions of yen for disaster victims. She is totally cool.

She might be cool as a goodwill ambassador but an awful performer. To raise funds and to sing are two different things. Raising funds, helping victims might make her popular and help her to earn more money but doesn't make her a better singer and performer. Me and other posters were writing about her as a performer and not a fund raiser as this time she came to perform.

Good one, she involves even God in justifying her repulsive, scary appearance.

LOL!

I'd prefer to see Jiro - at least he has ties to Japan and can sing.

i think you all might be suprised by the reaction from the older crowd here --- she has quite a good reputation in Japan even with the older generations - maybe not for her music or bizarre outfits, but after the 3.11 disaster, she started a fundraising bid the next day and sent many messages of support etc to Japan and the people.

i am scared to watch Kohaku now.

I have a better idea where she should appear. :-D

Who needs Her??-There is enough variety already, and as for" Little Monsters" AKB 48 happily fills the bill! We want more up and coming Enka Singers and less J "Talents" on the show!

Mehh. Gaga's fashion style isn't as appealing as the Pretty Cure super heroines.

Not only do I find the "misprint" (and I quote : "Lady Gag is scheduled" ...) really suits her but even in French, (without the "misprint") it's a perfect "description" ! (Just check "Gaga" in a French-Engllish dictionary...)

I see nothing wrong with having her on the show, and it sure would add some excitement!

It's hard to see what the big deal is any more with watching performers on TV. You can see whatever singer or group you like at any time convenient for you on Youtube. I guess these kind of shows are for people without internet or cable/satellite TV. I know the "kohaku' is a tradition in Japan, but it must be pretty mundane stuff for the younger element and might even be getting a little tedious for some of the not-so-young. BTW, I wonder why Japanese people never seem to get sick of seeing Arashi on TV. Being that they are in absolutely every set of commercials broadcast, it is impossible to watch TV for 30 minutes and not see at least one member of Arashi. Mind you, the manufactured "music" of groups like AKB 48 and the Jonnies boy bands etc. go down a bomb here and other parts of Asia. Unfortunately for me, they all make me want to throw up.

'Appearing' on Kohaku Uta Gassen and 'appearing by satellite broadcast' are somewhat different things. Either way, I won't be watching -- the show has become a disgrace, and their supposed attempt to sever yakuza ties have been nothing but lip-service, 'else no one would be on there.

"She says "God makes no mistakes". I disagree. If there is God, he made a lot of mistakes.

Agree. What is Gaga if not God's second blunder? Or is she suggesting that she must be acknowledged as a perfect one as she was created by a perfect God and as He doesn't make mistakes she must be divine, and was born this way. Good one, she involves even God in justifying her repulsive, scary appearance. Not even mentioning those little pads she publicly used, to play her androgynous game to garner attention.

She has the little pad

probably right Ossan...jEro (jerome) is the enka singer...but cant see him winning any performer of the year awards.

I wonder if she would appeal to Japanese Ojiichan and Obaachan who are the biggest audience of Kohhaku. "Gaa-Gaa" means a noise to Japanese, right?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I agree the older crowd and most Japanese would love an over the top - Kabuki style get up. But it needs to be artsy and aesthetic otherwise it will probably not translate.

And yes, she should do it for a ton of money because not only will Gaga raise their ratings but it will put the Kohaku Uta Gassen on the map globally - then she should set a fine example by donating it to Tohoku and other good causes...

Guest Appearance for free? if yes, most welcome.

Monsters shouldn't be allowed to perform.

"she's not japanese so why invite her?"

Why not?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

she was very hot , sexy.. no Japanese come close to her in good performance

showing and shaking her huge as... ....

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Well, that should make a good show for the septuagenarians who watch it. I do hope she'll keep her privates under wraps.
