NHK World TV to start video on demand

NHK World TV, NHK’s international TV service in English, will launch a video on demand (VOD) service on its website on Monday, June 15, in response to requests from global viewers for opportunities to see programs again and to reinforce the global provision of programs from Japan.

The service is available free of charge both in Japan and overseas. The service will start with 13 programs mainly transmitted within the past one week or two as a way to catch up with programs viewers may have missed. Major debate programs and travel programs containing useful information for visitors to Japan will stay for longer periods.

The VOD line-up of programs will steadily be expanded, considering the site access and user requests, along with clearance of their intellectual property rights.

You mean all those programs that endlessly promote Japan as that unique combination of the traditional and modern will want to be watched again? I like to watch this channel when I am overseas to try to work out who NHKY thinks the audience is.

NHK World desperately needs to update it's news coverage. The studio, graphics and general tone looks cheap and amateurish. The quality of the English language newscasters and reporters varies wildly too.

NHK World's programming is drivel, useful only to help get over jetlag. I agree with the news presenters skills (i.e. lack thereof) mentioned above.

I agree. I remember that they used to block NHK World in Japan. At first, I thought that this was unfair. Then I watched it.

Turns out, it was just nationalistic, rose-tinted propaganda BS.

If NHK actually showed an actual cross section of criticism, promotion and just plain facts concerning Japan, it might be interesting.

As it stands, it's just the official "Japan Tourism" channel. I don't know anyone abroad or in Japan that watches it, or thinks it is relevant in the slightest.

Good. Now make all of NHK free of charge
