NHK’s "Legends of the Deep: Giant Squid" aired on BBC2 on Saturday. The documentary is about the largest‐ever international quest to capture the legendary giant squid on film in its natural habitat. A team of scientists and crews from NHK and Discovery US deployed state‐of‐the‐art submersibles and filming gear on about 100 dives off Japan’s Ogasawara Islands — and finally succeeded in filming the creature.
Natural World Commissioning Executive Producer Chris Cole, said: “We know our viewers love surprise and new things — and of course it’s harder and harder to find these. Filming the giant squid has been the ambition of wildlife filmmakers for decades and is both surprising and new — truly a myth made real — so we’re delighted to be able to share NHK’s film with our audiences.”
"Legends of the Deep: Giant Squid" was also licensed to Spain’s TVE as well as Sweden’s SVT, who will air the program in November as part of their “Giants” series. The program premiered in Japan earlier this year, followed by broadcasts in the United States, Canada, Germany and France.
The documentary was also picked up by Discovery International, further expanding its global reach.

Will they have five second snippets of songs from the 80s while six B-list celebrities in the background make comments about eating?

This is fantabulous! I just saw "Pirates of the Caribbean" on television here in Japan two nights ago and wondered about the Krakken... Then this! It exists! Long live the Krakken! IMUA!!!

"Giant Squid" was pretty cool show, although the giantness of the squid was a little bit disappointing..... I agree it could have benefitted from standard J TV treatment and had a gaggle of young talented tv stars sitting around talking about their favourite squid recipes and showing surprise at every facet of the movie.
