NHK has announced that its 2019 "taiga" period historical drama will be about the Olympic Games.
Screenwriter and actor Kankuro Kudo, 46, who was in charge of the popular 2013 "asadora" drama series "Amachan," will write the script. The storyline will focus on the 52 years since Japan first participated in the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 until Tokyo hosted the Games in 1964. The title and cast have not yet been decided, NHK said.
This is the first time for NHK to decide a taiga drama so far in advance. It is also the first time that the taiga drama is set in the 20th century. The popular series usually feature feudal warlords and their families who lived in the Edo Period.

Not quite accurate - "Sanga Moyu" in 1985-86 was set before and during WW II. I know, I was an extra in several episodes....

So basically, NHK's trying to drum up support for the Olympics right before the 2020 games.

Navel-gazing again. NHK can't see the Olympics for anything beyond what it means for Japanese people. How many medals can Japan get, how do Japanese feel about it, and how great do foreigners think the obscure "little island" country of Japan is? Boring.
