I say let the victims who had left Johnny's and helped bring the scandal to light come and perform, and talk a little about what happened -- might even make the show worth watching for a few minutes.

Oddly, the lineup is arguably better quality. Too often in the past, producers just lazily slotted in Johnny’s group after Johnny’s group.

The right thing to do, but it should've happened years ago. Everyone in the industry, and at NHK, knew what Johnny was up to. Shame on them all.
And while they're finally cleaning up, ban all boy/girl bands from NHK (and elsewhere) too. They all abuse young people: not only sexually, but through power harassment, overwork, and sweatshop-level pay (while the agency makes millions.)

One of the remnants of the early period in Japsanse TV history (1951). Pretty outdated now.
Solution for you. Just dont watch it.
Redemption
I will not watch it yet again this year!
Moonraker
I actually watched it one year from beginning to end. It was surely a low point in my life.

100 year end song not sure what so fun to sit down at home and everyone watching this show as if they are missing out on a major lifetime event. This gets old time for new change

It'll probably be better without those clowns there
The Original Wing
That'll teach 'em!

So they are cancelling the performers who were abused? That doesn't make sense. Make it make sense. Why blame the performers. Also Smile-Up is total cringe and also doesn't make any sense. I've seem to have hit the doesn't-make-any-sense section

Good. Bring in some up and comers instead.
No one will miss the factory produced Johnny’s and their clones.

I would be ok with this IF NHK apologized for knowingly supporting J&A just like MOST media etc in Japan did for decades, NHK was a part of the problem, they & other media should also be paying some sort of price for turning blind eyes for DECADES!!!!
For shame!

So the boys continue to suffer missing out on the annual show? A show of mixed genre and perhaps the only time in the year non-fans would likely see them.
gokai_wo_maneku
Why should the Johnnies boys' careers be ruined because of something Johnny did?

NHK is punishing the victims.

I can see Johnny's talents were replaced by K-Pop singers.

As this scandal comming to the end the next Takarazuka one is about to explode.

Actually that scandal was not their faults. But Japan....well you know how they treat their staffs when something goes wrong!

The people molested and abused never got to become famous performers in Japan they were thrown aside when Johnny was done with them. The ones that did make it were complicit and never spoke out about what was really going on. That is why they none of them are being invited to this event. Of course all the major broadcasters also knew, as did NHK and they did nothing, but unless they have their broadcasting licenses revoked it is much harder to punish the them.

Not a fan of Johnnys, but this decision feels like the boys first got sexually abused, then shut out from performing. Feels a lot like victim blaming. Where's girlintokyo when you need her?

I am not a fan of the utagassen, but I do feel a bit sorry for the singers who have to pay the price for something they didn't do, or something that they were the victims of.
The real blame must be not with Johnnys or the performers but with the media who bowed and scraped before Johnnys, refusing to report what everybody knew.
Bad Haircut
Nice to see some good news, but it's all relative. Like saying they'll flush the can before you have to clean it.

Those performers are still under contract by Johnny’s/Smile Up. NHK would contract with Smile Up for any performer’s appearance.
Performers wanted the fame that Johnny’s would give them. Have any tried to quit the agency over the scandal? If performers are going to stick with Johnny’s despite it all, how sorry should we feel for them?
I’d have more sympathy for someone who left or was pushed out of Johnny’s and was then blackballed in the industry.
opheliajadefeldt
Did those abused let the abuse happen in pursuit of fame? It is a question and answer we will never know, because no one in a band or what ever will come right out and say, Yes, I let him abuse me for fame. People do weird and very strange things in pursuit of wealth and fame. I will bet that this was not the only agency where it /is going on. I am just waiting for a similar story to break in S.K. KPop.....we all know it will.

As others have noted above:
isn’t this just punishing the victims, and sweeping the story under the rug?
kohakuebisu
The "No ex-Johnny's singers in NHK year-end show 'Kohaku Uta Gassen' after sex scandal" headline strikes me as very badly worded. This wording sounds like the singers themselves are being punished, not the company previously known as Johnnys, the valid target for everyone's wrath.
Are "ex Johnny's singers" now working independently or working for someone else also off limits? If so, that would seem unfair.
