I say go for it.

“All the firepower strike means of the frontline units of the (Korean People’s Army) will launch without prior warning… to blow up balloons,”,,,

Popping balloons might be the most the NK military is capable of.

“...deliberately escalating tension on the Korean peninsula..."

And NK has been working so hard to deescalate tensions.

And who is sending the DVD players and the other equipment to play the DVDs? Idiots.

@bd1215, The residents of North Korea can purchase DVD Players, but they are only able to purchase DVD's approved by the state and is usually propaganda. Some residents also have computers as well.

As Bd1215 points out, DVD players aren't everywhere there and so the people who would most benefit from seeing it wouldn't be able to.

The weight of the DVDs and the inability for the masses to access their material make it a pointless idea.

I know they already do flyer drops sometimes, but its a far better way. Everyone can read them. And they can do so without touching them (reading them on the ground and walking on - making them less likely to be caught by the thought police).

Oh and there's also the fact that its a crappy film so they'd probably turn it off after a few mins like I did.

North Korea's military on Sunday threatened to blow up balloons that South Korean activists plan to send over the heavily-militarised border carrying 10,000 DVDs of the satirical Hollywood film "The Interview".

I think the verb you want here is "destroy" or "intercept." Otherwise, it sounds like North Korea is planning to cross the border. And who wouldn't in order to get a free copy of the DVD?

99 Luftballons?

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Well, sooner or a later some N.Korean will see it.

It is really nice of them to offer to "blow up' the balloons for South Korea...... Maybe they just want to get free DVDs??

It said the launch would constitute "the gravest politically-motivated provocation" against North Korea and "a de facto declaration of a war", according to Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency.

The move is aimed at "deliberately escalating tension on the Korean peninsula where the situation has reached the brink of a war due to... joint war rehearsals" by South Korea and the United States, it said.

Yawn...

I really find it hard to believe that winters can be so cold in South Korea (I been there) with all that constant damn hot air coming from North Korea.

Meh. Childish... and I'm talking about the SOUTH Koreans! This sounds too much like a publicity stunt for the movie producers. Question: How many North Koreans have the capability to play DVDs?

"“All the firepower strike means of the frontline units of the (Korean People’s Army) will launch without prior warning… to blow up balloons,” the North’s frontline military units said in a notice to the South. It said the launch would constitute “the gravest politically-motivated provocation” against North Korea and “a de facto declaration of a war”,

I love these NKorean decarations. Do they really need to depoly ALL of their firepower for this? And is the "without warning" suppose to frighten somebody? What difference does a warning make on a massive strike against balloons? I think if anyone south of the 38th flatulates the NKoreans consider it a "declaration of war".

How many North Koreans have the capability to play DVDs?

Of course they have DVD players but they have only 10 DVDs to play-

The documentaries of Kim Jong Il, Kim Il Sung and Kim Jung Un. Also the film adaptations of their autobiographies. The rest are Dennis Rodman films or documentaries. You can't forget the classic film Simon Sez.

@Da Dude "The documentaries of Kim Jong Il, Kim Il Sung and Kim Jung Un. Also the film adaptations of their autobiographies. The rest are Dennis Rodman films or documentaries. You can't forget the classic film Simon Sez." Is that their idea of “merciless retaliatory strikes”? With all the hot air coming from the North they could blow up a bowling ball - but they will probably miss.

Meaningless PR stunt. In a country with daily brownouts and people eating grass because of lack of food, who is going to pick up and play DVDs? How many have DVD players anyway? Not to mention that being caught with one of those DVDs will not only send the holder to a concentration camp, but also his entire family.... for 5 generations.

Imagine a North Korean watching this movie. It will just confirm that America is an evil country because the CIA is out to assassinate the leader of their country. The comedy surrounding Kim will just look like American propaganda. The half-naked and sex-scenes confirm that America is a country of decadent immorality.

Imagine a North Korean movie about a Korean commando sent to the U.S. to kill president Obama. (I'll let you fill in the details yourself.)

You have to be very stupid to believe dropping this DVD will actually achieve anything.

USB sticks are now the most popular way to watch foreign material, as it is easy to hide, share and delete the content. I also agree that sending this movie will be counterproductive. Much more efficient would be to send USB sticks filled with educational material about history, the world, political philosophy about freedom and natural human rights, and of course material exposing the truth of this criminal regime (how the Kim mafia has billions of dollars in Swiss bank accounts, how the "socialist" propaganda hides the lavish lifestyle of the elite, lies about the Korean war and their "socialist paradise", etc.).

The idea of blowing them up is inflated.

They are apparently more common than you might think. DVD players (extremely cheap ones from China) are affordable to the typical North Korean family. Portable DVD players--which can easily be watched away from prying eyes--are especially coveted.

I wondered if this may be the case. The guy launching the balloons is, if I recall correctly, a N. Korean refugee himself, so I don't imagine he would be launching DVDs if he thought no one could watch them.

Could they airdrop something heavy directly on Kim Jong Un's head before he gets a chance to procreate?
