Not surprised. The last anniversary to commemorate Woodstock was an all out disaster. Anything but love and peace.

A disaster because love and peace do not pay the bills - same the the original.

The original wasn't about the money, though.

The "alternative" concert will probably be much better and true to the spirit than this would have ever been. I went to the 90s woodstocks and indeed they were awful, completely sold out to corporate interests and with no positive vibes at all. I still remember the near-riots that took place due to the stinginess of water supply and how hot it was! I'm sure this one would have been no better.

Oh please - every concert is about the money. The organizers of original Woodstock paid double rated performance guarantees to their big name performers. They begged a last minute bank loan to be able to pay all acts.

LOL. Waiting for the Altamonte reunion with cosplay bikers as stagehands.

1) if they were already paid, they need to return the money

2) is it still Woodstock if not held in Woodstock (technically the original couldn't either, but Bethel [actual location] sounds a bit religious)?

juminRhee:

any monies paid to artists thus far would only be deposits, not their full guarantee because the majority of major label artists are not paid flat rate fees (complex formulas are in play).

pacificwest:

a radius clause is put in an artist's performance contract that states they can't play another show within a specific mile radius until a certain amount of time before or after the event being contracted for.

Woodstock was not just an event -- it was a place and a time. You can't recreate the conditions, especially through commercialism. Let other things happen elsewhere, and under other circumstances, but hopefully with some of the same unity, and if people like, they can say, "This is our 'Woodstock'".

The only way a "new" Woodstock would ever be close to the original is if the majority of acts were still around and active, and the original line-up was curated. As that not being the case, just give it up already. There's no Woodstock of 2019. Come up with a new name, book whoever you want, and be prepared to lose money as concert promoters barely generate a profit per show and festivals are even more difficult.
