The Ricky Gervais monologue at the past Oscar show - enough said.

Actually, I'd like to more - which year was this? Pretty sure he hasn't presented or done one of his monologues at the Academy Awards.

I remember when the Oscars, Grammys, American Music Awards, MTV Video Awards were so entertaining. I'd stay up late watching them and later when I was in the Navy and college we'd have pizza + beer + wine coolers at our parties watching these shows and digging our favorite stars. All these shows mattered.

that was the 20th Century.

The self-congratulating celebrities will be more than happy to miss another roasting from Ricky Gervais, even if he does it via video-conferencing!

It's refreshing to see that the atheist and animal rights comedian has such a following.

No one cares !

I do, and so do a lot of other people who take a keen interest in cinema. The celebrity pandering is an unfortunate sideshow, but the award winners matter to me a lot.

I think a lot more people would appreciate them if they had a say

I disagree. What we don't need is a bunch of fanboys turning the next superhero-in-tights movie into a Best Picture winner. Any voting method has its flaws, as does the current one. But I don't think that turning it over to the masses is the answer.

The Academy Awards and the Golden Globes are not the same thing.

No movies in theaters = no contestants

I think they're changing the rules for this year only, so that films that debuted on Netflix or whatever to be eligible.

Release the films on the internet, now. Let the people see them all for free, or under their subscriptions to one or more online streaming apps.

Some have done! In America, though. I haven't seen it happen in Japan.

So...?

I remember, as a kid, the thrill of staying up until the wee small hours or rising early, to see this show beamed in from America.

The thrill of seeing these celebrities, what would they say, what were they wearing and what film (that I was usually too young to have seen yet) would walk off with a clutch of awards?

That thrill has dimmed somewhat over the years, so I'm fine with highlights etc, but the joy of cinema remains.

In these terrible times (are there any other?), I reckon we need escapism more than ever.

Call it a nice thing to do given that many are stuck at home and WOULD go see the movies if they could, but can't. Go by ratings, and numbers of times the movies are watched, downloaded, what have you. It is not a normal time, so why should the Oscars be normal? I think a lot more people would appreciate them if they had a say, and if they had been all been given an equal chance to see the films.

Honestly who...cares..?

I share the general lack of anguish shown by other posters.

Feb 28th of 2021? Do they have to make a decision now?

Imagine my despair.

What a tragedy.
