This is why no one takes the Oscars seriously anymore. Color and ethnic bingos over talent. Imagine auditioning for a role and getting filtered just because you weren't dark-skinned or queer enough.

Given that Weinstein - and undoubtedly others - had such a firm grip of who was hired/fired for top-budget films,, and clearly influenced which films made it or not, this is a necessary decision.

Just like so many big-money events, corruption and bribery have been rife in the Academy Awards, and efforts should be made to ensure a fair voting system.

Cool.

The once mighty Academy Awards. Nothing but a farce now.

Good news, it's about time Hollywood was held accountable for continuing to be exclusionary and racist. Just because a studio makes an all-Black or all-Asian cast movie once every 5-20 years, doesn't mean they truly embrace equality or representation on TV or movies.

Sorry, but anyone can make a movie these days. You don't like the movies you see? Make your own rather than demand someone else make it for you. This isn't the studio system of the 1950s. There is plenty of opportunity for everyone.

Commanteer,

Exactly.

This isn't true.

Agree. Innovation happens when people see a problem and figure out ways to fix it themselves instead of demanding that someone fix it for them. These diversity quotas are just going to turn people off because movie makers will resort to tokenism to tick all the diversity boxes.

The best picture award, which is handed out to the producers of a film, is the one category which every film academy member can vote for. Earlier this year, the South Korean film “Parasite” became the first non-English language film to win the award.

Please point out for me how much diversity was in this movie, as I'm a bit stuck

I haven't seen it, but there's a pretty good chance everyone in it and involved in making it was ethnically Korean. I guess the irony is lost on the perpetually offended crowd.

Kyronstavic,

Well said. The clamour for “Diversity” only applies to western nations.

6 ( +13 / -7 )

oldman_13, Im lookin forward to seeing your movie.

Excellent news, which will reduce the bigots to much weeping and gnashing of teeth.

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

excellent news. This will be the final nail in the coffin for Hollywood and their love for what Gad Saad famously calls the DIE religion. (Diversity Equality and Inclusion).

Already unwatchable garbage will become more of a torture chamber for the bigots who pray to the altar of identity politics.

Voting for "Best Picture" shouldn't be complicated. Which picture was the best?

Vote for that one.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

@Kyronstavic

Parasite had a 100% Korean cast, it was a fantastic movie however it had zero 'diversity' in it. I've long given up looking for logic from these type of people.

Can somebody explain the article, I could not understand anything that was written.

Is the article saying that everybody is going to get an award just for breathing. Is that correct?

The amount virtual signaling and social justice buzzwords were too much to make this article comprehensible.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

The article means the Oscars are now even more farcical and irrelevant than they already were, which is really saying something. “Best Picture”, “Best Actor” etc havent meant anything for years. People actually used to

(and justifiably) often judge whether or not to see movies based on these awards. That hasnt been true for a loooong time.

That's your opinion. Doesn't make it true.

I take it films like Roma or Moonlight don't interest you?

And now we know why a certain young actor I know has been told over and over he does not fit the roles he auditions for.

Japanese/caucasian mix told doesn't look the part of a white guy and not Asian enough to even play a Japanese despite actually being Japanese.

He has watched in North American productions, Japanese roles go to ethnic Chinese, Korean, etc....just as long as they look Asian enough I guess.

Strange thing is he has not trouble getting roles playing Japanese characters here in Japan.

The west has lost its mind.

Moonlight is a good example of what happens. A gay, black gangster gives the film a big advantage over films with straight white characters. It was a decent character study, but not a film that sticks with most people. It didn't cover much territory, it was a shallow study of one aspect of a character. Fell way short of what a movie can be. Not many people will be lining up to watch it in 20 or 30 years. I haven't been eager to see Best Film winners for years now - it's always something that caters to whatever political theme is popular in Hollywood rather than, you know, the best film.

Some of the best movies are made outside of Hollywood these days - in Korea, Iran, China... Hollywood makes products. And when they attempt art it comes off as shallow in most cases.

Oh, but those movies are so lacking in diversity!

I’m curious. Should I stop watching Japanese films because they aren’t a fair representation of the global population? Also, does this mean all Chinese, and Bollywood and Nigerian films are out too? And that Korean zombie drama I’ve been watching on Netflix, that has to go too, right?

I ask because I can’t think for myself, but all the cool, woke kids say I need to see only films that show people like me.

No you should not, the lack of diversity makes these movies bigoted and racist AF.

Since I was bored I look up ROMA, and guess what, racist movie, there were no colored people, no asians and no beduins.

I also checked out moonlight and you know what... the main lead is not even gay, gasp, a hetero playing a LGBtQHA the outrage.

So if you liked these movies then your also part of the problem.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

He who tells the loudest!

My favorite example: Flashpoint a Canadian police TV show had a single main character that was Black.

This got certain people to complain and yell so much that 2 most main black characters were added.

This was quite ironic seeing that in Canada Asians are 15% First Nations are 5% and Black are under 3% of the population.

There were no main Asian or First Nations characters.

This was because the show became popular in the USA and we know that 2 groups in that country will tell the loudest.

Thank goodness the awards are after the presidential election. The acceptance speeches are just political lectures. If a person really wants to know who won whatever, read it on Fox or CNN at real time or the next day. Anyone who appropriates an opportunity to be recognized for any award needs to remember, he or she (not they, which is grammatically incorrect, puts on his or her pants the same way - ONE LEG AT A TIME. You know what people say about opinions!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

This is Hollywood just being political, not artistic.

Yep, adding even more to the extreme diminishment of the award’s credibility. Vacuous Hollyweird stars lecturing us.

This is going to be a bit of a difficult concept to go through, but I think you can manage it. Take your time reading through this.

2020, the year Parasite won the award for Best Picture, comes before 2024, the year these standards will first be applied.

I hope this has been enlightening. If you are still having difficulty, I'm sure your phone has a calendar that you can use.

All art is political.
