The 2017 Oscar nominations were a banner year for black nominees both in front of and behind the camera.

Because they pulled the race card out and screamed the loudest. The other groups should do the same. Then Oscars can be based on mediocre performance and not really mean anything.

Exactly, so what are they complaining about...

It is a good point...if there is in fact equal representation...women receiving as many awards...It seems however that the focus of this complaint is the number of women behind the scenes. That could be quite a valid point. In spite of it's liberal bent (or progressive may be the right word) Hollywood is quite a misogynistic place.

Regarding black participation, black Americans make up 13.2% of the U.S. population. I wonder what the true representation in Hollywood is.

If I looked at the NBA, blacks make up over 90% of the players, far exceeding the representation in the general population. Perhaps that should be investigated as well.

It seems the issues related to race have become much worse over the past 20 years. The root cause? Who knows?

What can does anyone really expect, it is Hollywood after all .

What about transgender people: where is the Oscar category for them? All we have is "best actor", "best actress" etc. And when was the last time an Inuit won anything? It's totally unacceptable in this day and age.

These exclusionist, discriminatory awards ceremonies should be consigned to the dustbin of history. The only fair approach is to give awards to anyone that wants one.

Good point. Certainly the Inuk Allakariallak would have received at least a nomination for his role as himself in the unforgettable film "Nanook of the North" had it not been released in 1922!

The facts don't seem to fit the narrative. Are minorities unrepresented unless a Mexican director wins the Oscar for the 4th year in a row? It's arguable that articles and authors like this (who have been dividing people up and promoting identity politics over the past decade) are directly responsible for the rise of Donald Trump.

The allegation about "minorities" being underrepresented is highly misleading. Jewish people make up disproportionately high number of people in America's flim-making industry by a very large margin.

At the same time, African-Americans are overrepresented in the other huge sector of the US entertainment world, popular music. Do these groups really want the situation to be leveled out? LOL. I kinda don't think so.

And yet there are so many Hollywood liberals who call Trump racist and sexist. Hollywood should check its own racism and sexism first before it starts sticking those labels on political leaders they disagree with.

With how few awards there are it is inane to expect some kind of representative cross section of every minority group.

The movie business is driven by the box office receipts. Should movie viewers not want to see some kinds of movies or some kinds of actors or actress, then those viewers stay home. In the end, viewers decide what is a good movie and the value of the production's cast. Should be surprised Hollywood does not acknowledge this.

I have never been able to understand the appeal of the Oscars or other "awards"; a group of people in the industry giving each other awards and telling each other how great they are doesn't mean much to me anyway. But when they start handing out awards based on quotas or political correctness it reaches a whole new level of stupidity.

No. The modern US explanation is that Hollywood hasn't sufficiently implemented quota's to ensure that merit has been undermined by politically correct bean counting.

The problem is not race, this year there were more movies that were better and had black leading actors, last year there weren't any, it's about the quality of the film, has nothing to do with color, if more Black film directors make more movies that could get picked up, that is what will set them apart, talent, content, not race.
