Parody of Girls Generation song proves big hit on YouTube

A parody of Korean pop group Girls Generation’s song “Gee” by SMAP’s Masahiro Nakai, accompanied by Oyaji Dancers, a dance group of elderly men, has become a big hit on YouTube. For the parody, they renamed Girls Generation (Shojo Jidai) to Showa Jidai (Showa generation) -- the era from Dec 25, 1926 to Jan 7, 1989. They also renamed the song from "Gee" to 爺 (Jii) which means old man.

In the video, the guys dance to the same choreography as in the original version and the background uses part of the original version. Their dance moves and their costumes are well prepared, especially Nakai's make-up and wig which make him look like a “jii-san.”

This video is popular not only in Japan but also in other countries too and has been played more than 2 million times so far on YouTube. Responses from other countries include "Good job, Nakai!!" "Japan is great!" etc.

Parodies like this often appear on the Fuji TV program "SMAP×SMAP."

Who writes these stories?

Oh, I'm starting to get the idea . . .

yah....thnx but I rather stick with Girls Generation. :)

2 million times? That is not popular, write a news story when it hits 20 million

Look like a Jii-san? He already is.

The only member of SMAP I like is Nakai -- he's relatively down to earth and I've heard from friends who know him that he's a nice guy. I'll check it out later. I'll still stick with Girls Generation if I had to choose one of the two, but parodies, if done well, can be a lot of fun.

'Gee' is a couple of years old - not the most topical parody...

i totally agree, gox3. 2 miilion hits isn't exactly viral.

Another sign economic stimulus packages are working.

Heard of GG's "Gee" but never actually saw it. Now that I see it I can't believe this shtuff got popular. Sad. (I'm not talking about the parody.)

I don't think I've ever seen anything so lame.

Oh what a surprise - grotesque capering and funny-face-pulling. The epitome of sophisticated entertainment in this oh-so-cultured nation.

The ultimate oyaji gyaggu.

This song is hysterical and I find hard to like it, but the parody is funny.

Does everything have to be about Oyajis? It's so lame and boring... Oh I forgot...I was born in OYAJI land! (>_<);

Only in Japan, and maybe England, would cross dressing old men be funny.

Ivan Couffhanoffalot has perfectly summed up my feeling: oh, no ! Not a parody anymore ? Are japanese artists able to produce really original pieces of art, without copying or parodying others work ? Well, after more than 15 years living in Japan, I can say a big NO ! Parodying Mozart, parodying Dali, parodying Bruce Willis, Barack Obama or Adolph Hitler, here is their "number 18". By the way, isn't that the producer of these SMAP who recently made Lady Gaga's Youtube account suspended, because she "illegally" showed on her channel an extract of the SMAP's program where she was the guest star ? So talented, so friendly...

This is quite honestly the BEST parody ive seen EVER!!

And why is everybody on here so bitter all the time? Every article that gets posted up is always accompanied by multiple complaints or put downs regarding the content. Why?

why is everybody on here so bitter all the time?

This isn't bitterness. It's the ability to discern between entertainment and witless, infantile pap.

Come on, can people accept this for what it is? Just a silly parody of a silly music video...like if the original one was a piece of art...sigh.
