And then they came for Pepe, and I said nothing...

I thought this was going to be about stereotyping the French.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

There is no cancel culture "debate". There's only the right wing propaganda machine being triggered and whining.

-11 ( +11 / -22 )

Comedy is dying because of the Cancel Culture. That's according to a number of comedians. Are they going to cancel Marvin the Martian for blackface/cultural (alien) appropriation next?

Pepe Le Pew I believe was in part inspired by the French crooner Yves Montand. It's parody. Remember that?

Imagine if the Hollywood celebs DARED to have celebrity roasts like they did back in the 70's with comics like Don Rickles mocking literally everyone!

7 ( +14 / -7 )

Anyone has ever been offended by Pepe here? Or are with just going with the (I hope) vast minority of professional offended people?

12 ( +15 / -3 )

The morons are going after Speedy Gonzales too. I grew up in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in the East L.A. area. Speedy was a hero to kids that were happy to have Mexican representation in animation. The problem is these whiny parents' home basement dwellers think they can flex their white privilege and speak for everyone without asking questions and opinions first. Before you know it, there will be nothing left to cancel and cancel culture will cancel itself.

9 ( +14 / -5 )

In the French version, Pepe is Italian!!!!!!!

I wonder what happens in the Italian version?

10 ( +10 / -0 )

The lovelorn cartoon animal -- who spends most of his time in luckless pursuit of a female cat who is repelled by his advances and noxious smell -- hit the headlines last week after a New York Times columnist said Pepe "normalized rape culture."

He’s a skunk.

My dogs used to ‘normalize rape culture’ by humping my leg.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

There are far more people who will buy their product than will protest it.

The money always wins. It's their product and they can do whatever they want with it. If you don't like it, don't watch.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

The artists who created Pepe might disagree with you.

They're dead.

Romance is dead. Apparently looking is basically rape.

Pepe Le Pew did more than "look". You don't know what you're talking about.

And then they came for Pepe, and I said nothing...

The number of people who don't understand the intent of that poem is extraordinary.

Comedy is dying because of the Cancel Culture.

It really isn't. There's fresher (and funnier) comedy than a child's cartoon from 1945, I promise.

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

Pepe Le Pew did more than "look". You don't know what you're talking about.

Yeah, he pursued a cat and tried to woo her with sweet talk and it always failed because he's oblivious and comes on too strong. It's not like he ever raped anyone on the cartoon. The idea was part parody and part warning to hopeless romantics.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

And then they came for Pepe, and I said nothing...

The number of people who don't understand the intent of that poem is extraordinary.

Mate, it's not me who doesn't understand it.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

Then cancel Yosemite Sam and Elmer Fudd as well. Are they not an offensive stereotype of hillbillies? It seems like rednecks and hillbillies are the only safe target to ridicule now because the “Wokes” really don’t care about, and actually deeply loathe them.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Sorry, Yosemite & Elmer have already had their ‘guns’ taken away @BeerDeliveryGuy. The nurturing, er,... neutering continues.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Again, more ‘selective’ editing to promote an agenda and divide people through a nonissue: “the film's director changed and had never reached the stage of rendering the skunk's animations.

In truth, “Penelope Pussycat is genuinely attracted to Pepe, but her two biggest turnoffs are his scent and his habit of coming on too strong.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Give it a break. No one has cancelled anything. Nearly everything and everyone ever canceled is still out there available to be got. Including every Dr. Seuss book, every Mr. and Mrs. Potato head, and every racist bugs bunny cartoon that ever was.

This is all just a ploy to get right-wingers angry so they'll hate democrats, and therefore actively obstruct their policies on moral grounds, rather than logical differences in political approach.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

In the French version, Pepe is Italian!!!!!!!

Manuel is "Paolo" and Italian in the Spanish version of Fawlty Towers. In the Catalan and French versions, he is Mexican.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuel_(Fawlty_Towers)

If the original cartoons had Pepe grabbing and kissing, my memories are vague, all you have to do is tone it down.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Penelope Pussycat is genuinely attracted to Pepe, but her two biggest turnoffs are his scent and his habit of coming on too strong.

What is this a quote from? I typed it into Google, with quotation marks, and your comment was the only thing that came up. You know that quotation marks don't exist to add emphasis, right?

By the way, Pepe Le Pew was not liked by his creator, nor by the fans. Here is a real quote:

Mark Evanier observed that even Pepé's cocreator Maltese "wasn't (...) too fond of him", and reported Maltese's claim that later Pepé cartoons were the result of the success of the first one; Evanier also noted that when he included a Pepé cameo appearance in the script for an issue of Gold Key Comics in 1975, he learned that no model sheet of Pepé existed, and that a Warner Brothers representative said there was "not enough interest in that character"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pep%C3%A9_Le_Pew#Criticism

Mate, it's not me who doesn't understand it.

You are looking at the mass murder of Jews, communists, socialists, Jehovah's witnesses, gays, Roma people, and trade unionists with someone who is making Space Jam 2 not wanting a skunk in the movie and saying "yes, these are the same thing".

Are you concerned that, absent a pervert cartoon skunk in this film, Space Jam 2, pervert skunk cartoons will be sent to concentration camps?

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

I thought this was going to be about stereotyping the French.

Nah, no one gets offended by that.

French skunk Pepe Le Pew will not appear in an upcoming "Space Jam" sequel and is not planned to feature in any new "Looney Tunes" cartoons, sources familiar with the productions told AFP, as a debate swirls over sexism and "cancel culture" in Hollywood.

Good lord.............Pepe, Heckle and Jeckle are some of the best animated shorts ever made.

Just like Mel Brooks said, with all this PC nonsense, comedy is dead. And the man who created Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs, has the authority to declare that.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Just like Mel Brooks said, with all this PC nonsense, comedy is dead. And the man who created Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs, has the authority to declare that.

Shogun - Blazing Saddles is my all-time favourite comedy, but Spaceballs is weak.

Isn't it amazing that all of the "Government has no place in private business" Republicans are getting their panties in a bunch about private companies making their own decisions about what to do with their own products?

I defy you to find me anyone currently clutching their pearls who actually owns, let alone has read McElligot's Pool.

This whole faux scandal is pure distraction theatre. Got to keep the outrage bubbling, otherwise people will start thinking. And the sad thing is, the Fox News crew are falling for it.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Just like Mel Brooks said, with all this PC nonsense, comedy is dead.

That's weird, I watched a number of new comedy films and television shows over the last twelve months. I suppose I must have imagined them. Enjoy your 1940s cartoons for children, though.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

Sure, all of these campaigns to get rid of stereotypes in comedy and cartoons and so on may not be the end of the world. But the obsession with forcing companies to toe the new cultural line feels a little bit obsessive.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

But the obsession with forcing companies to toe the new cultural line feels a little bit obsessive.

Who forced them?

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

The right is amazing at putting up these culture war squirrels to divert from any discussion of Biden’s bill that will keep millions of Americans out of poverty.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

I’ve loved Looney Tunes since forever, and still to this day I watch them and often quote Bugs and Daffy and Porky. Who, of the people that grew up on Saturday morning cartoons, doesn’t quote Bugs?

I’m such a fan that I bought the Looney Tunes library DVD collection. It includes all the cartoons, including the ones made during the war that portray Japanese with buck teeth, as well as cartoons from the 40’s with black people portrayed with big red lips. These are racist stereotypes that we have dropped and now condemn because we learned better.

That collection comes with a prologue explaining that the cartoons with racist stereotypes were created in a different time. It explains that they are included in the collection because they’re part of our history. It is important that we not hide our past or try to pretend racism doesn’t still exist. When watching those cartoons, we feel uncomfortable. We can’t enjoy them.

Pepe is the same. Pepe is a relic of the past. His behaviour is not acceptable. We know better now.

Pepe is retired.

Let him go.

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

When watching those cartoons, we feel uncomfortable. We can’t enjoy them.

Why use the third person when talking about your opinions, are you not one person? Or do you have multiple personalities.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Also, a fan of LT (but never cared to see SJ1.) @girl_in_tokyoToday 5:33 pm JST.

I’ve loved Looney Tunes forever, *and still, to this day, I watch them ...***such a fan I bought the DVD collection,...including the ones during the war that portray Japanese...as well as cartoons from the 40’s with black people portrayed....

*That collection comes with a prologue explaining that the cartoons with racist stereotypes were created in a different time. It explains that they are included in the collection because they’re part of our history. - *Agreed. *These are racist stereotypes and now, we learned better. -

*It is important that we not hide our past or try to pretend racism doesn’t still exist”*- Well said! Agreed. We can STOP there*.*

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Here’s Our comment: That’s great PR on the part of the distributor.  They acknowledged the racism and now, they can continue to sell it IF they choose.  After all, it’s their IP

Now, adults, ‘like us’, can make our own decisions IF we want to watch, or Not.

If You choose not to buy a DVD, or ‘stream’ or buy a seat in the theatre, they may choose to alter their business plan.

They great thing is: We’re Free! We don’t have a ‘state’ telling what we can read, watch, teach, sing, etc.

We can All raise and teach our own kids our own way.

We definitely don't need Disney, Hollywood and all other ‘people that play dress-up’ and get paid to ‘pretend for a livingto tell us what we should and should not see.

So, *no further ‘revision’ or ‘censorship of the past’ is necessary*.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I love Pepe but can definitely see why they would want to remove him. Never saw the first Space Jam and won't see this one either but the original shorts are still around and have not been ''cancelled''.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Oh, Btw *@girl_in_Tokyo. “Pepe is retired” *definitely not true because You say it,

Please read the article again: The Producers: “*The character has not been **officially banned or retired.”*

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Haven’t forgotten Your question @LazarusKnows 2:06p JST. Agreed - We should never quote without a cite or a stating the source. It follows:

https://loveinterest.fandom.com/wiki/Penelope_Pussycat

Paraphrased in the interest of brevity: “In recent years, Warner Bros. merchandising has depicted Penelope and Pepe as mutually attracted "sweethearts", -you know, like Minnie & Mickey, Daisy & Donald, Scooby & Shaggy, and others.

btw @LK2:06p, You should try being specific, too. Then, we don’t have to guess about or read through a whole thread again. We will know to whom and what You were addressing (keep us out of your ‘persecution’ arguments in the same paragraph. We weren’t party to Any of that conversation.)

We reiterate our @11:58a post: The article suffers from ‘selective editing’ to promote an agenda and divide people through what is basically, a nonissue.

And, “Here You have it, Ladies and Gentlemen!” -quote follows: “it’s been implied that Penelope is genuinely attracted to Pepe.” - Sometimes hot, sometimes cold, still, a courtship with some passive-aggressive behavior but, an acknowledged, mutual attraction.

”That’s All, Folks!”

Lord, I hope the writers at NYT don't stumble on a copy of Heart of Darkness or Moby Dick (or hundreds of other classics)!

I better start downloading all the corny shows like Charlie Chan, Abbot and Costello films, and Mr. Moto, their days are numbered.

Anyone has ever been offended by Pepe here?

I have. Okay, it's just jealousy. He's got more game than I do.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

When watching those cartoons, we feel uncomfortable. We can’t enjoy them.

Why use the third person when talking about your opinions, are you not one person? Or do you have multiple personalities.

The Rock says, learn what talking in the third person is about before making a comment.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

There is no cancel culture "debate". There's only the right wing propaganda machine being triggered and whining.

Like cancelling Gina Carano from the Mandalorian when she was talking about people coming together, even though her cast-mate Pedro Pascal said something actually bad. The difference? She's conservative and he's not. Cancel culture is alive and thriving under the direction of the "offended" liberals.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

In response to your earlier question, we were reminded of some other comments that further supports our assertions:* the media crediting current controversy from ‘non-issues’, *like cartoons.  Case in point, there was recently another “Entertainment” issue about ‘neutered potato toys’. (*Conclusion: The manufacturer listened to the fans ands has since recanted his current ideology to alter and change the product*

One commenter Feb. 26  9:35am JST sarcastically commented: - "I'm deeply , emotionally and mentally invested in the gender of a plastic potato made for two-year-olds" - very healthy adults who have good priorities. -  Today, like ‘Bugs Bunny in a dress’, being chased by Yosemite Sam, flitting about ‘between here and Mississippi’ looking for a fight, indicates a resentment of “systemic sexism, oppression and discrimination”. Those are real issues.  This is not.

Pursue those fights and we’ll stand with You.  But here, ‘the low hanging fruit’ of silly entertainment is too easy and not worthy of your energy.  Basically, it detracts from your credibility on the real issues in society. Leave the ‘Nerds’ and ‘Fan Boys’ to their own pursuits. They are not encroaching on Your rights to enjoy Your life.  -

*Our Conclusion: There is NO ‘cancel culture debate’ **here*. - Best wishes to all.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Anyone saying that the cancel culture doesn't exist is foolish themselves.

I am generally viewed as left often even to far left for many that say they are left.

But now Pepe, us added to the list that includes Tintin, Mark Twain, etc.. what next Shakespeare?

Again today another over reaction by mostly Americans.

Amanda Gorman, who read her poetry at the inauguration has now cancelled the contract with a second European writer/translator.

First we had the prize winner Dutch non binary writer/translator now it is the Catalan prize winning writer/translator for not being black.

She and her publishers originally had no problem with these 2 people but USA social media started complaining now they have both been dropped. Cancel culture is alive and well and it is now becoming an uncontrollable beast that no one will soon be able to avoid or control.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Next, let's cancel any movie that shows any violence and killings, as well as video games with guns and any blood in them because they are making kids and adults alike turn into serial murderers. The Passion by Mel Gibson? Cancelled because it shows to much violence and may normalize cruelty and mutilation. From now on, we're only allowing Teletubbies on the big screen and TV.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

@Antiquesaving 11:03p Maybe you’re reading too much into ‘Our Conclusion’: @9:58p “*There is NO ‘cancel culture debate’ HERE’. (-on this* one topic). The only ‘truth’ in the headline is the word “prompts”.

- Point being, we have to stop playing into the media’s push to separate people, even in regards to individual’s leisure activities and entertainment. Like art, it’s all subjective. Are we going them dictate every aspect of our lives, even our ‘down time’.

We think @Strangerland 12:57pm summed it up best: “*Give it a break. No one has cancelled anything. Nearly everything and everyone ever canceled is still out there, available to be got...every Dr. Seuss book, every Mr. & Mrs. Potato head, and every racist bugs bunny cartoon that ever was. - This is all just a ploy to get right-wingers angry so they'll hate democrats, and therefore, actively obstruct their policies on moral grounds, rather than logical differences in political approach.”*

We’ve read many your posts from the experiences and perspective of a father. We think you would agree: “We can All raise and teach our own kids our own way.  *We definitely don't need Disney, Warner Bros., Hollywood* and all the other people who play dress-up’ and get paid to ‘pretend for a living’ *to tell us what we should and should not see. *

With regards to what’s already been produced, we don’t need them to ‘revise’, ‘reimagine’, or attempt to ‘censor of the past’. It’s not necessary. It was what it was.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@snowymountainhell

If no one or nothing has been cancelled then the Dutch and Catalan translators must still be doing the translation of Amanda Gorman's work.

Oh wait no they aren't they had their contracts "Cancelled". Why because people complained they are both not the right colour.

Naw, if you want to let him go, please do so, but there are millions of Americans that don't want this and now watch the black market cash in on this.

Yes or Sesame Street, but that means we would have to cancel Oscar the grouch.

Pepe LePew is the Harvey Weinstein of anime characters and someone with whom every woman in the audience has at least some experience and, probably, would prefer not to relive the experience watching anime. I realize he embodies the conservative image of the Perfect Male, hence their outrage, but clearly has serious psychosexual boundary issues just as the first line of their diagnosis before we even reach the compulsive and obsessive behaviors which characterize the damaged mental health of the character, and of its supporters.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Think Americans would have better things to worry about than a cartoon. Things like unemployment, health care, homelessness, education, etc.

It's a drawn cartoon character. People need to get over this. The country is turning into a Marxist State. Who are these Democrats that think they have the right to tell you what you can and cannot watch.\

I can't understand this line of thinking. Yes, it's a cartoon character, but cartoons have just as much of an impact on the culture as TV shows and movies. If they didn't, you wouldn't be arguing so vociferously and in fact would not have even made note of the absence of this character.

The upset is understandable; I feel sad as well. However, I also know when its time to move on from the past.

And no one is telling you what you can watch. You can still watch the Pepe cartoons. I have copies of them myself. As I said, I sometimes watch them even now - albeit with sad nostalgia.

And if you think a production company that decides, all on its own, to retire a cartoon character is the sign of a Marxist state, then I don't think you actually know what Marxism is.

Naw, if you want to let him go, please do so, but there are millions of Americans that don't want this and now watch the black market cash in on this.

The entire Loonie Tunes collection is widely available on DVD. You can get it on Amazon. There is no black market for cartoons.

I also tend to think that if you don't already have the Loonie Tunes collection, or know that you can watch it freely on YouTube, then you aren't even really a fan - which makes me wonder why this is even an issue for you.

And finally, if you have to exaggerate beyond all reason in order to make an argument, then perhaps you should consider that your argument is not valid.

Why use the third person when talking about your opinions, are you not one person? Or do you have multiple personalities.

If you think I'm the only person who has this opinion, then you haven't been reading the other comments.

Also, if you are not in the "we" that feels uncomfortable when watching the racist depictions of Black people and Japanese in these old cartoons? Well, that tells me pretty much all I need to know about you. And it tells me that trying to reason with you on this is going to be utterly futile.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

@girl_in_tokyo

Don't be 'disturbed' by old racial memes used in previous generations, learn from them and learn how to recognize their reincarnations in the new racial memes we are forever creating. When observing pathological Human behaviors (thoughts, too, are 'behavior'), a 'cold' eye is much more useful than a 'hot' eye. A 'hot' eye really only sees itself and the important details of the behaviors are ignored yet are exactly what one needs to understand to, perhaps, hope to deprecate and, eventually, extinguish such blind, manipulating-parasite-implanted behaviors in otherwise halfway decent people. Abuse seems only to strengthen such pathological behaviors and adds 'defensive energy' to their pursuit. Sadly, the people who seem most submerged in such manipulation are also the people least capable of freeing themselves from the mindless induced fear that creates the 'hatred'. Rather than condemn these people, how do we HELP them to see beyond their small worlds to see Humanity itself? If only I were that smart...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

With respect, @Antiquesaving, 11:03 & 12:03pm, no mention of THAT ‘cancel culture’ issue in any recent JT but found it on CNN. Perhaps JT will do the ’fair and balanced’ ethical thing and address those stories, as well.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I can't understand this line of thinking. Yes, it's a cartoon character, but cartoons have just as much of an impact on the culture as TV shows and movies. If they didn't, you wouldn't be arguing so vociferously and in fact would not have even made note of the absence of this character.

I’m not the one with the problem. I was fine with the cartoon, I just laughed and that was it, it’s a cartoon and didn’t do anything to influence my thought process or act out in devious and chauvinistic ways.

The upset is understandable; I feel sad as well. However, I also know when its time to move on from the past.

Yes, it’s a cartoon, either watch it or don’t. But I have pretty much the entire collection, I’m not going to let the government or a bunch of idiot Washington bureaucrats to push an agenda to tell me what I can or cannot watch, not arguing or mad, just not going to happen and that’s the end of that.

And no one is telling you what you can watch.

Of course

And if you think a production company that decides, all on its own, to retire a cartoon character is the sign of a Marxist state,

I do know what it is (thank you though) and I do know that like everything else, these people are bowing to the pressure of the cancel culture mob. Now I understand why the left is absolutely going nuts being powerless to stop Tucker Carlson from being fired, no matter what they do or how they try, they just can’t get it done.

And finally, if you have to exaggerate

Sorry, I don’t exaggerate, I just call BS on the people bowing down and capitulation and appeasement of the woke idiots, but I’m happy that the black market will elevate and make it that much more popular, they failed during prohibition and I see another round of history getting ready to repeat itself. Lol

.I’m not the one with the problem. I was fine with the cartoon, I just laughed and that was it, it’s a cartoon and didn’t do anything to influence my thought process or act out in devious and chauvinistic ways.

I was fine with it too, until I got older and started experiencing sexual harassment. After that, it wasn't so fun to watch anymore.

Yes, it’s a cartoon, either watch it or don’t.

Exactly. What's the fuss over, if you are quite okay with the idea that some people just don't want to watch it? But you seem to be specifically angry that some people don't want to watch it. You can't simultaneously care and not care.

And to be clear, I don't care if you want to keep watching Pepe. It makes no difference to me. I don't think you understand that protesting the production of any more cartoons of that type is not the same thing as demanding people stop buying or watching the ones already made.

But I have pretty much the entire collection, I’m not going to let the government or a bunch of idiot Washington bureaucrats to push an agenda to tell me what I can or cannot watch, not arguing or mad, just not going to happen and that’s the end of that.

Exactly no one is telling you what you can or can't watch. This is what I meant when I said you are exaggerating.

When people decide they no longer are interested in something, and in response the market stops producing it, that's not Marxism. Likewise, when the culture changes and certain attitudes, images, words, etc. become unacceptable in polite society, that is not Marxism.

Another thought I often have when reading comments like yours is the hypocrisy. I have noticed that everyone who hates "cancel culture" when something they like is being criticized, supports "cancel culture" when it works in their favor and the things they dislike are being criticized.

As an example, when sports players take a knee during the anthem, the people who didn't like that condemned them and suggested they be fired. One Million Moms is a group that is infamous for calling for various things to be banned. And who can forget the people calling for a boycott of Starbucks because their coffee cup was red and didn't mention Christmas?

What you and the others here don't get is that there is no such thing as "cancel culture', and it has always been the case that people complain about and criticize the things they don't like. The only difference is that in early days it was letters to the editor and town meetings and protest marches and people complaining to one another. Now we have social media so it's more public and louder, but otherwise nothing at all has changed.

Sorry, I don’t exaggerate, I just call BS on the people bowing down and capitulation and appeasement of the woke idiots, but I’m happy that the black market will elevate and make it that much more popular, they failed during prohibition and I see another round of history getting ready to repeat itself. Lol

You just said there is a back market for cartoons and compared this to prohibition, where the substance at issue was made illegal and the police broke down doors and arrested people and put them in jail for having it. I am not sure how much more exaggerated that claim could become. Talk about BS ...

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I was fine with it too, until I got older and started experiencing sexual harassment. After that, it wasn't so fun to watch anymore.

Well, sorry that you had to go through that, can't imagine the pain of going through something that horrific, but having said that, but that is something totally different from the company dictating to the rest of the country what you should and what you can or cannot or shouldn't watch.

Exactly. What's the fuss over, if you are quite okay with the idea that some people just don't want to watch it?

And the same applies to the people that want to watch it, don't think solely on the people that don't want to watch, keep it and the ones that don't want to buy it, then they won't.

Exactly no one is telling you what you can or can't watch. This is what I meant when I said you are exaggerating.

I know I can watch it and it's not an exaggeration seeing the online frustration and anger that yet another large company decides to capitulate to the masters of woke-ness.

When people decide they no longer are interested in something, and in response the market stops producing it, that's not Marxism.

That is utter and total BS it wasn't that the weren't interested, they had a knife to their necks and felt the pressure to cave in.

https://www.theblaze.com/news/whoopi-goldberg-pep-le-pew-critics

Another thought I often have when reading comments like yours is the hypocrisy. I have noticed that everyone who hates "cancel culture" when something they like is being criticized, supports "cancel culture" when it works in their favor and the things they dislike are being criticized.

Well, you can make the reverse argument about for people that support the cancel culture, so it's a washout.

What you and the others here don't get is that there is no such thing as "cancel culture',

If there is no cancel culture then people wouldn't be upset about people canceling everything in our culture....kinda an oxymoron that one...

Of course there is a cancel culture, back in the old days in America, people didn't get bent out of shape and demanded people get fired or get canceled or shunned or ostracized for liking something or having an opinion, even if it doesn't agree with you or your worldview then it must be canceled, buried so deep, deeper than the Indian Ocean.

You just said there is a back market for cartoons and compared this to prohibition, where the substance at issue was made illegal and the police broke down doors and arrested people and put them in jail for having it. I am not sure how much more exaggerated that claim could become.

They thought so during prohibition, look how that turned out.

How can that possibly be the case, when literally NO ONE knew that scene was going to be in the movie before it was announced that it was cut? It was only afterwards that people began to lose their minds and complain that "they can't tell us what to watch," when the movie hasn't even been released yet.

Sigh. You can't reason with the unreasonable.

That wasn’t the issue. The was retiring the skunk altogether because the left are completely irrational and devoid of all sense of cultural compassion and understanding.

Well, you just read my mind and cut me to the quick.

How is it irrational to keep up with the cultural zeitgeist, and adjust accordingly. This is what people do as a natural reaction when times change and we learn how to be better.

And the fact that you are protesting because people are learning how to be better and changing their behavior, language, and media they consume accordingly seems to indicate that it's not the amorphous entity you label "the left" that is devoid of cultural compassion or understanding.

You claim that a company reacting to cultural changes is Marxism, compare a company deciding not to use a scene in a movie to prohibition where police broke down doors in search of an illegal substance, arrested people and sent sent them to jail, and said that there is going to be a black market on cartoons, which right now as we speak you can buy freely on Amazon. This is such a huge exaggeration that I don't even know where to begin.

But tell you what: as soon as someone gets arrested for selling Pepe cartoons, and they begin to put people in jail for watching them, I'll be right here apologizing to you and admitting how wrong I was.

But if this never comes to pass (and it won't) I know for certain that you won't be admitting to me that you made a mistake, nor will this teach you anything about reasoning, being reasonable, or admitting when you're wrong.

When an honest man discovers he is mistaken, he will either cease to be mistaken or cease to be honest.

This goes to the lot of you people making this argument.

Because big brother wants to decide what we can or cannot watch? Very irrational. What's next, Rap? In that case, we should cancel ALL Rap and Hip Hop music, but that probably wouldn't go well racially, so......

And the fact that you are protesting because people are learning how to be better and changing their behavior, language, and media they consume accordingly seems to indicate that it's not the amorphous entity you label "the left" that is devoid of cultural compassion or understanding.

What a bunch of crap! People were fine before the cancel culture started taking over, and where does it end, if they ban water or milk or music altogether, that's acceptable? Sorry, not buying it.

You claim that a company reacting to cultural changes is Marxism,

Yes and I stand by that claim

But tell you what: as soon as someone gets arrested for selling Pepe cartoons, and they begin to put people in jail for watching them, I'll be right here apologizing to you and admitting how wrong I was.

You don't need to go that far, as long as there is supply and demand big brother can't and won't be able to stop it over time.

But if this never comes to pass (and it won't) I know for certain that you won't be admitting to me that you made a mistake

I can't admit to something or wrongdoing when I wasn't.

When an honest man discovers he is mistaken, he will either cease to be mistaken or cease to be honest.

That goes for both genders and all arguments

But I have pretty much the entire collection, I’m not going to let the government or a bunch of idiot Washington bureaucrats to push an agenda to tell me what I can or cannot watch, not arguing or mad, just not going to happen and that’s the end of that.

It's great that you have the entire collection of every cartoon and comic ever, but you can understand that rapey characters, racist characters and suchlike might not be appreciated by everyone.

That's why certain films/books etc are these days labelled, to give context to the offense.

And some titles are withdrawn.

I don't think anything is actually being banned, unlike Burqas in Sri Lanka, which you are in favour of.

I get it, but people should be allowed to make the choice for themselves when it comes to what they want to read, eat or watch.

I am ok with that just like with the warning labels on rape, no problem.

They already do.

Nobody is taking away your choice.

You're not being told what clothes you can or can't wear, or whether or not you should watch this, that or the other.

They already do.

They don’t, if they did, you wouldn’t hear a stink about it.....pardon the pun.

Nobody is taking away your choice.

Oh, yes they are when they’re saying they’re pulling the movies off the shelf and canceling their characters because of woke cancel culture.

You're not being told what clothes you can or can't wear,

Not yet, but I have no doubt that’s coming soon as well.
