Pop singer Seiko Matsuda, at 54, still turning heads as a lingerie model

They don’t call her the “Eternal Idol” for nothing.

Finding early success as an idol singer in Japan opens up the doors to a wealth of other options in the entertainment industry. If you’re a chart-topping vocalist, it’s only a matter of time until acting, modeling, and TV personality job offers start rolling in.

So it isn’t really all that unusual that the Japanese arm of lingerie maker Triumph International would ask Seiko Matsuda to star in its new ads. After all, she’s been one of Japan’s favorite idols since her debut…which was in 1980.

While it’s true that many idol singers start their careers at a very young age, Matsuda didn’t lay down the vocals for her first song when she was in embryo. She released her first single at the age of 18, and is now 54 years old. Not that most people would guess that from looking at her in the promotional stills and video for Triumph’s new Florale sub-brand of intimate apparel.

But Triumph didn’t pick Matsuda just for her enduring popularity and respect from multiple generations of Japanese fans. The Florale line is specifically designed for mature wearers, with the company expressing its goal as complementing the unique beauty and confidence of women with an abundance of rich life experiences.

After all, if Japan is open to the idea of bikini models in their 40s, lingerie models in their 50s isn’t such a stretch.

My wife and I both love Seiko, do her Christmas dinner show concerts sometimes.

To be fair, Black Sabbath is correct when he points out that the abomination that is "burriko" really is largely thanks to Matsuda's efforts to cultivate th noxious idea. I think she looks fantastic at 54. I can only hope I hold up as well. But make no mistake, that cutesy, pretend-you're-helples-dumb-and-5-years-old-even-thought-you're-actually-22 as way to garner adult male attention really and truly is obnoxious and feeds into the whole lolicon garbage that too many Japanese males (and females) believes constitutes a desirable woman, i.e., submissive, clueless child.

Again, good on Matsuda for equal parts of taking care of herself and hitting the genetic lottery, but she owns the stink bomb that is "burriko," no two ways about it.

Sometimes triumph gets it right: http://www.triumph.com/jp/ja/cw_press_20091111.html

and sometimes not: Seiko Matsuda.

This looks more like a cartoon than a video, not saying she hasn't aged well or anything, its just that this is a cartoon, anime, not video of a person................

Exacly! That face has so much plastic surgery that It doesn't move anymore

Jeff certainly didn't say no....!

Without watching the video, I am guessing there is a lot of foggy, cloudy, soft-lighting and isolated camera work going on here.

Yeah right....

Cleo - I love your post, well said, lol. Charo -agreed.....btw, 55? your pic looks 15 years younger, wow!

Japanese women. That's all I'll say. Apart from the fact my wife refuses to get old making me look more and more like a baby snatcher.

It's not just Japanese women. Southeast Asians are the same. Look at the 1965 Miss Universe from Thailand who is way older at 67 years old and she looks like she's in her twenties. I'm 55 years old, yes, that's a recent photo and even East Asian women's (there is a huge Korean presence in my area) bug out when I reveal my age.

She and other Asian women look really great!

@thunderbird. It's Japan Today. It's the old "I've heard of them or seen then on TV so I automatically don't like them because the are Japanese and well known here." I think she looks good and even if she doesn't look good does it matter.

Women still wear lingerie?

yep...at the drop of a hat

What were are all SUPPOSED to say is "Wow, she looks like an 18 year old." And that begs the question. If an 18 year old is supposed to be the goal, why are you looking at a 54 year old and drooling? And if you are not looking for an 18 year old, then what is going on here? I don't know. They need to save this stuff for Halloween, not June.

Maybe you should have watched the commercial (it's a commercial you know, not a soft-porn video) before deciding what 'this stuff' is and when it should be saved for.

It's a well-preserved mature lady modelling a bra in a very demure, restrained way, in the hopes that other mature ladies who see it might think, 'Ooh, she's the same age as me, I might look good in a classy not brassy Triumph bra, too'. The goal of the ad is to reach other ladies in or around their 50s and persuade them to buy expensive undies. The goal is not to provide titillation for slack-jawed, immature JT posters who have got their Y-chromosomes in a twist.

And wot Thunderbird2 sed.

She looks great! Two thumbs up! Way up!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I don't understand the hate in this discussion... she looks great, the ad is well made and it's classy. What do people want, some bubble headed idol with an overdeveloped pair bouncing around with crash zooms and sound effects as she bounces about? Grow up.

Every once in a while, you get this stuff with ...Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, and YIKES Cher. I don't really fall for this.

A lot of your women the same age are just as lovely if not more.

Smart move by Triumph. Women well in their 40s, 50s or even 60s have the figure to wear such lingerie these days. Plus they often have more class and taste than 20yo bimbos who think only g strings are sexy.

the idea of the attractive older woman is much weaker in Japan than in the West

TBH I think this has been changing for some years now.

Out and about in Tokyo I see plenty of attractive mature women going for a young and even sexy look.

It's a fantastic trend IMHO.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

No doubt someone's been at it with Photoshop et. al, but not bad. Much better than her music!

While I'm not a Seiko fan, the idea of the attractive older woman is much weaker in Japan than in the West, so I'm all for this. I hope it encourages more older women to feel positive about themselves and not just give up and dress down like an obasan.

This lingerie is too boring.

Many mature Japanese women are hot and have great bodies for really sexy lingerie.

I clicked on the video and it seemed to be a commercial for a winter coat with a bra underneath... wtf!!

What it should be is a sizzling hot mature Japanese lady posing in a skimpy bra and t-back panties set, with a matching garter belt and stockings.

When I have bought this kind of lingerie for mature Japanese ladies they have really enjoyed trying it on and showing off their fantastic bodies.

I've enjoyed it too.

i just saw this vid. Her breasts are not impressive at all.

It's not an ad for Hooters, Robert.

she is pretty nice video

You sure she's not wearing anything like a that necklace from that very popular tv show ?

Daniel does not seem to care for JukuJo. Too bad. She is a beautiful woman and the soft camera approach and photoshop touch ups are well done.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Body double in a few shots.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

I'm amazed the heat from the lights didn't melt her.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

She's no Shinohara Ryoko.

Not much

To those who downrated my post:

What part of the "idea of a helpless, submissive, and cute look of a young girl" do you not understand?

Seiko-chan debuted the year I was born. I kind of grew up with her.

Cute face but don't see curves at right places.

I hate Seiko Matsuda. WIth good reason:

Burikko is a Japanese term for a style of personal appearance and demeanor that was coined and developed by pop idol Seiko Matsuda. It was originally created to complement the Japanese word kawaii, meaning "cute", which became important in modern Japanese culture. Although there is no literal English translation, Burikko falls under the main idea of being "cute" but with a certain style to go along with it. The Burikko style was accepted and followed by some Japanese women in different cities and some men were fascinated by it too (also known as the Lolicom or Lolita complex). It is the "idea of a helpless, submissive, and cute look of a young girl".

54??? Wow, I hope mrs papig will still look that good at that age. One can wish.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Good presentation.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

She sure looks fantastic for her age.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Turning heads? Meh. More like turning heads away. ;-)

She still looks good and this was tastefully done and nothing pornographic in nature as some lingerie ads tend to look like.
