I just don't get why this guy is so popular.

Faith in humanity: restored.

It's shattered actually. A fool instead of another fool. Sad really.

The song and video have received mixed reviews from South Koreans and the rest of the world. ” ‘Gentleman’ is just a mere duplication of ‘Gangnam Style.’ I don’t see much creativity in it,” a South Korean blogger wrote.

@smithjapan

The only thing you can really be sure of is that it won't be available at iTunes Japan because they are jealous of his success.

Strange thing to say...both his songs are available for 250 yen each at the Japanese itune store. Also all his Korean albums. And anyway, I'm sure apple wouldn't let any imagined jealousy stand in the way of some easy profits.

I liked Gangnam Style the first few times I saw it. It was a catchy tune, and the video had some humor in it. It also had Hyuna :) After a while it did begin to get on my nerves, but only after seeing/hearing it for the 911* 2356th time. I immediately dislike this song. GS stayed with me after the first viewing. This, I have already forgotten about.

As for the issue of Japan being jealous of his success . . . no. I do not think so. It is not an issue of antipathy between the two countries as Japan consumes a voracious amount of Korean pop culture (movies, dramas, music). I do not think Japanese people give a fudge about this guy. Maybe it is because he does not fit the traditional image of KPOP stars (plastic). As for pop culture in general I think Japan is way ahead over Korea in worldwide popularity. Granted, you see a lot more KPOP around the world than JPOP, but anime and manga has been seen by, and influenced more people than any KPOPer.

Sounds like a couple angry ants on this thread, ranting about "jealous" south korea, k-pop sucks (compared to the awesomeness of SMAP, AKB 48 etc.!) Suck it up, boys. I don't care for this blokes music but good luck to him. You don't HAVE to click on his videos you know.

You don't get it do you? Most of us here ranting because while there are great singers out there, whether Korean, Japanese or US or UK, those fools like Psy and Bieber are heavily promoted like some art wonders. They suck, that's the truth.

3 ( +7 / -3 )

PSY's limited three to four chords that hide behind a wall of nothing. Nothing said and nothing new. Today, you belong there on the cover of people of SK that enjoy three to four chords of repeats. Maybe because South Koreans drink alot of Soju and be happy, don't worry, who cares. Few years from now, nobody will talk about him.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

@smith South Korea will yet again ride this into the ground just like they did gangnam style, they're pretty desperate for everyone to notice them lol which proves they're x10 more jealous of japan than japan could be of korea (could you change your pic cause you clearly don't have any mentality even remotely similiar to the doctor)

In the first 24 hours, it racked up around 20 million hits, destroying the previous record for single-day views of 8 million, set by Canadian heartthrob Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" video in May 2012.

Faith in humanity: restored.

Was essentially Gangnam mark 2. Which will work. But I don't think mark 3 will be as big.

This. Simply this. Man, envy? Such an idiotic comment. Both Bieber and PSy music is crap. Their nationality isn't important at all. Also Lady Gaga is overrated (and she is an American with Italian heritage, like Madonna. Should I be proud of her, being myself Italian? No! Because her music can be sometimes catchy, but overall it's low quality music, in my honest opinion). I'm proud of Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli.

Why did his new album called as Gentleman? He was not a gentleman at all in that video. I enjoyed and recommended Gangnam style before. Not a Gentleman album anymore!

It was unpleasant to see the way he treated elderly men carrying his bags, the woman jogging on the runner, his date for dinner and the woman on the beach. He even sexually assaulted mannequin without any respect. He was making fun for other people suffering.

That album should be called as Uncivilized man or Disgusting man!

i wonder... why is it foreign land, likes this kind of a music or entertainment, without fully understand the real meanings and messages of this songs,,,? are they really like it? or they just influence by the so called "it is "IN" now..???

This single shows that they understand what works abroad. This is a guaranteed hit, no doubt.

Of course it's gonna get huge first day / early viewing - people wanna see what's next, but the question is if it'll have massive follow-up views and sustain first blush popularity - will it drive sales and pump his celeb status?

He's actually tried something somewhat different, and only time will tell if it works for him: depiction of bad boy outright, childish rudeness. Is this a parody / criticism of male treatment of women? Hard to say. The lyrics include "... mother father gentleman" which could be a variant of Samuel L Jackson's favorite oath.

Sheesh, I've already spent way too much time on this. On to more important things, like Mister Donut changing its recipes...

I just don't get why this guy is so popular.

It's because YouTube put a link to the video at the top of its homepage. A rather silly video on the same page titled How Animals Eat Their Food has gotten 34 million views. It's all about exposure.

I'm sorry! I watched it too, just to see what all the fuss was about. Pretty sad clip really!

I apologize for posting like a jackass.

Or Japan are used to this type of music unlike the West....

No. Don't you see? It is obviously a parody/spoof. /sarcasm]

Amazing! 24 Hrs = 20 Millions viewers. All viewers are from Korea? How much he will get from YouTube this time? I hope YouTube will check it all viewers users identity and give the check to this guy?

The storyline features the singer teasing and playing practical jokes on women, such as pulling their chairs away as they are about to sit or untying a woman’s bikini top at a swimming pool, before meeting his match.

Says it all really.

i watch it only because of Gain from Brown Eyed Girls is in it. some part of the dance is actually from BEG's Abracadabra. you guys might want to check that out. Gain is HOT!

The song was average, although I can see it being playing fairly constantly in clubs in Roppongi like Gangnam Style was so glad that's it's got a catchy tune at least.

Regarding the video, it seems to fit the same style of the hilarious Gangnam Style video but doesn't quite match it I reckon. Also I don't think he should take off his sunnies lol..

@ blackrock - I repeat - people DONT HAVE TO CLICK ON THESE VIDEOS! If the tone-deaf masses do, good for them. Its entertainment for many. Just listen to and click on the great artists out there - and don't give a rats that Justin Beaver or psy are racking up 500-trillion youtube hits.

i totally agree dave, japan and hong kong have been extremely popular in the west since the 70's and korea just broke this ice a few years ago thanks to youtube, so these people saying japan is jealous of korea kinda makes me giggle at their lack of knowledge, jpop isn't as popular as k-pop or as well known however; anime, manga, japanese movies, and history (especially ninja's) outrank k-pop 10 to 1 lol even people that hate japan or know nothing about it know these things lol

davealltogether: "As for pop culture in general I think Japan is way ahead over Korea in worldwide popularity"

Not in the least, and you yourself admit as such in your next sentence: "Granted, you see a lot more KPOP around the world than JPOP"

So then, how is it that Japan is way ahead? manga, yes. cos-play, yes. porn, yes. That's about it. I agree with you that Psy's new video and Gangnam Style for that matter don't fit the usual mold, but then, could that be why he is the single most viewed person on YouTube in the world? And yes, Japanese jealousy does come into play here as well. Gangnam Style could not be bought on ITunes Japan until recently, and the song didn't really play at all here because of the Dokdo/Takeshima issue. Instead you have the black trucks constantly berating SK culture because Japan consumes too much of it, instead of listening to their own untalented hacks.

Well, there's 4 minutes of my life I will never get back. At least he solidified his status of being a complete tool bag.

-3 ( +8 / -9 )

There is so much crying in this thread. Priceless. It's a song. Do you see people making a big deal when we see anime and manga here in the West?

"You don't get it do you? Most of us here ranting because while there are great singers out there, whether Korean, Japanese or US or UK, those fools like Psy and Bieber are heavily promoted like some art wonders. They suck, that's the truth."

Better than AKB48 which always gets praised here.

@Kobuta "Amazing! 24 Hrs = 20 Millions viewers. All viewers are from Korea? How much he will get from YouTube this time? I hope YouTube will check it all viewers users identity and give the check to this guy?"

Just like the one Japan got caught with recently right? Look it up. Your favourite singers view counts on YT all shrunk significantly. Why copy and paste a comment I've seen thrown carelessly around 2ch? Like a said. it's just a song. But then again, this is Japan.

Just like practically all the posters here who keep mentioning Korea in articles that have nothing to do with Korea right? This is also a trend in my days of visiting 2ch as well. Always Korea korea korea. People need to get over it.

dctokyo: "At least he solidified his status of being a complete tool bag."

Which you helped contribute to. The only thing you can really be sure of is that it won't be available at iTunes Japan because they are jealous of his success.
