Elvis, like Siddhartha Gautama is the center of a new religion. He's got intense devotees all over the world. but make no mistake, his impact on rock'n'roll is tremendous. His white (with some Cherokee) ethnicity and his life's surroundings made the fusion of black and white American musical styles what it is. Chuck Berry set the groundwork with his guitar playing and Elvis was the white man impetus that rose America out of its postwar milquetoast dreams. And his rebellious image helped a lot too.
