As to banning Gone With The Wind, it is just another in what I call the Orwellization of society and culture. Another attempt to erase uncomfortable history and replace it with bromides. Looking backwards with 20/20 hindsight is always a danger.

I think in Minnesota the book To Kill a Mockingbird is to be banned. Goodbye free speech.

I totally disagree with this whole literature and art banning crap. As much as I support the Black Lives Matter movement, I think we are going down the wrong road when it comes to banning literature and art. Yes, "Gone with the Wind" is racist and has a lot of racial stereotypes, but it was written in context of the Civil War which were racist times.

If we go down this path, we'd have to ban a lot Mark Twain books which are considered American literature, but has a lot of racism in it. It was an ugly part time in American history, but we should not pretend that it never happened.

People may argue that the Confederate statues are also a part of American history; I would argue that it was a part of Confederate history hence should not be displayed "publicly" in America, but should be put in privately owned museums dedicated to Confederate history and the Civil War and cater to only those who take interest in it.

Yes, It's a fictional movie set in an ugly period of history. It's a relic, In college history class we were shown 'Triumph of the Will'. That movie is hideous, pompous and is a relic of a history we don't want to repeat. But it has historical value.

Exactly. That's where it belongs. When the Confederate flag at the South Carolina Capital was taken down, Pres. Obama stated that it should be in a museum. It's history.

The same year me and some other vets visited an Air Force museum. It has displays (dress uniform, rifle, national flag, etc.) from the WW2 Axis Powers from the now gone fascist regimes of Italy, Germany, Japan and Spain. That's not a celebration of fascism, it's a display of an ugly part of history.

The Confederacy is history. Time to put it away for good. As for the arts, they should be taken in a historical concept only, not banned.

Latifah might also promote shelving her execrable role in Bringing Down the House, which exploits dozens more unfunny racial stereotypes in the 30 minutes I could stand to watch. If you haven't seen this movie, don't.

Loved in Japan, Gone with the Wind will always be a classic love story with die-hard fans throughout the world. Like cowboy movies, it portrays a society that has gone forever. (You can find a hint in the title).

First it was the statues, then the books and movies, next it'll probably be renaming or destruction of the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial, after that the renaming of Washington D.C. How about anything with the names Washington or Jefferson associated with them, such as highways, schools, etc. How about censoring the names of slave owners whose signatures are seen on the U.S. Constitution? Where does it end?

Richard Nixon wrote in one of his books that Americans liked to engage in self-flagellation and maybe this is what's happening now. Many Americans would like to throw away their history, warts and all, of who they are and where they came from. Shame, embarrassment, anger, resentment, whatever you want to call it . . . In the end, a leopard can't change its spots.

No one is talking about banning the movie. Queen Latifah didn’t mention banning the movie. Banning is something governments do. Is every movie theater and every other streaming service and tv station that is not currently showing a particular movie banning it? Of course not. HBO can cater to its audience and decide for itself what it wants to make available at a given time.

There are many 'heroes' in the world with little meaning. It's not a US only problem. Why glorify, for example, Napoleon, who killed so many of his own and Russian and other people? No one would glorify Mao or Kim or Stalin. Time to rethink who's a worship worthy person and have one world standard.

Just weird that so many posters on here are like "I have to watch Gone With The Wind, I have to watch it tonight, and I have to watch it via HBO MAX".

This is going to shock you, but Gone With The Wind isn't a documentary.

Should the movie be banned? No.

Should the movie be embraced? No.

A lot of the criticisms of the film are fully justified, its a distorted portrayal of a very ugly part of history. Movies shouldn't be banned for that, freedom of speech exists for good reason. At the same time though I get the discomfort and anger this movie creates.

Also despite what some commenters have suggested, Latifah doesn't actually say the movie should be banned. Her words are more in line with a call to just stop watching this garbage because it is garbage, which I'm totally fine with.

It's a wonderful book and film depicting a terrible time in history. We have to LEARN from the past so as not to repeat terrible things in the future.

Blacks should see these movies as educational. Plenty of Holocaust movies out there.

You're missing the point. Those Axis Powers displays are in the museum as relics of a war started by the fascist Axis powers. Those fascist regimes are gone, history. Nazi items are used for educational purposes only in Germany, the Italian Fascist Party is forbidden to regime, Japan's Emperor has avoided visiting the Shrine of the Warriors as long as Gen. Hideiki Tojo is interned there because he misled Japan to shame and disaster and Spain has renamed streets and taken down statues honoring the Falangist dictator Francisco Franco.

And so it should be with the Confederacy. It's an ugly chapter, a bad cause that should not be glorified but it belongs in a museum now. Just like Nazism, Fascism Italia, Greater Nippon and Falangism are over, the Confederacy and slavery are over. Stop glorifying these things and put it all in museums.

Personally, I'm glad to see it go. If a leopard can't change it spots, then you won't have any problem with these movies, monuments and whatever being removed. White Supremacists have always wanted people to see their symbols of hate and racism. You'd put a burning cross on someone's front lawn. Burning and removing some old monuments is pretty much the same.

No one wants to see your representations of evil on public property. It's just another burning cross. I don't expect some posters here to understand it. Jews don't like the Swastika, African-Americans don't like symbols or racism and hatred.

The only reason some people are against the removal of such symbols is because we are in a war over America's identity, her very soul.

For the REAL Japanese readers out there. Imagine if your son or daughter were hit with buckshot, which is very painful by the way, what would you ask the doctor to do? You would ask the doctor to remove every single piece of metal from the patient's body. You have to do this, so the body can heal. You can't leave any shrapnel in the body. Then the doctor has to perform a painstaking process of cutting the patient open and pulling out the bullets and metal pieces that threaten the patient's life. That is what America is doing. In order for America to heal, you've got to remove the venom coursing through it's veins.
