Rie Miyazawa to divorce former pro surfer

Actress Rie Miyazawa, 39, who married a former professional surfer in 2009 after becoming pregnant, announced through her management company this week that she's ending their three-year-marriage.

In a signed fax, Miyazawa explained that the couple have grown distant due to their different commitments and are currently discussing the terms of their split through their lawyers, Sankei Shimbun reported. "Differences in the way we think have gradually driven us to a point where it feels difficult to carry on," she explained in the fax.

While Miyazawa is focusing on her acting career, her husband -- who is in his 40s -- is based in Hawaii, managing a sunglasses factory. The couple met in 2007 and were married two years later when Miyazawa was eight months pregnant with their now three-year-old daughter.

Miyazawa is currently appearing in a production of "The Bee" at Tokyo's Suitengu Pit.

How do these "professional surfer" guys get these women? Well, It's very simple question to answer. It's all about hypnosis. First, when those girls go out to the beach automatically they expect & hoping that something would happens to them Second, Watching those Waves & comfortable breeze , sounds of oceans put them into very very deep in hypnotic trance state . it would let her guards down & would listen & can not resist almost any guys suggestions like waiting for your commands like a dog . just like as in an syndrome , A silly country girls goes to a big city stituation is happening at this moment. Third , then the casual invitations from the naked guys then the going out to the bars could not resist then with the little alcohol with light tranced state, they would not able to say no to the offer of making out in shabby motels or the where girls are staying at . To be honest with , it is most easiest way to pick up & get laid with mentally very weak & easy females left & right.

How do these "professional surfer" guys get these women? First was Noriko Sakai and then Rie Miyazwa. Shizuka Kudou and Takuya Kimura were Friday-ed surfing shortly before their marriage. Surfing is exhilarating so perhaps it leads to a 'misattribution of arousal' (Dutton and Aron) effect - the thrill of the surfing, or even just watching it, may be thought to originate in the person rather than the waves.

I think it was 1992 when her photo book, Santa Fe, came out. From then on, I was in love with her!

Sorry, but this is a copout. While external factors in our lives can affect the way we think and feel, anyone who allows external locus of control to dictate their decisions is a fool....

I didn't mention the bit about her father as a "copout" for her, and I agree that ideally people need to take responsibility for overcoming their own personal demons.

However, in Japan especially, there is likely more to the her story than what it said - and this was really my point. In modern Japanese society, a breakup that envolves children also generally amounts to what is in effect "legalized abduction". Hand and hand with this is generally a systematic form of parental alienation enacted by the abducting side of the family.

This has a strong negative, and lasting, impact on the children involved.

I think that Japanese society is in a self-perpetuating downward spiral of fatherless homes. While most modern countries, if only superficially, try to promote paternal involvement in the life of children, Japanese society and legal system effectively promotes the dis-involvement and/or complete removal of the father

This seems to have created a repeating cycle of each generation lacking the tools to

This is reflected in the ever decreasing marriage and birth rates, and the ever increasing divorce rate and number of fatherless households.

Japan needs to rethink their views on family values, the importance that both parents play in the life of a child, and reform the Japanese legal system from the archaic and corrupt thing that it is into something that actually works and protects children. The system needs to reformed to ensuring that one "controlling" parent is not given a "rubber stamp" to cut the other parent from the life of the child. The system should be protecting children, not emotionally inept and selfish parents. Maybe then, this destructive family cycle of modern Japan could finally have a chance to start reversing itself.

It will be interesting to see what, if any, role that the "surfer father" will be allowed to play in the life of his child... Or if this will be yet another typical Japanese-split where the father is unceremoniously cut from the life of the child.

All readers back on topic please. Posts that do not focus on Rie Miyazawa will be removed.

@Reckless

Actually in Japan it is better to get married, even briefly, before the child is born, otherwise the kid's family register will list him/her as illegitimate for perpetuity.

Just demonstrates that the Japanese system needs reform.

Well, if a husband and wife live apart- they will grow distant

.I'm not so sure about that...

I should become a fake surfer too and bag a rich, good-looking dolt.

Takenohana...time to take that "second wife" who is so close to your heart.

She was driven from him by her vicious mother..........a real tragedy.

Well said Smith. Blame someone else rather than herself.

No discussion about the hubby? A retired pro surfer living in Hawaii without his wife is not "getting some" now and then?

"...Rie discusses how the fact that due to her having grown up without knowing her own father, that this has had a negative impact on her emotionally and impaired her own ability to have relationships"

Sorry, but this is a copout. While external factors in our lives can affect the way we think and feel, anyone who allows external locus of control to dictate their decisions is a fool. She ALLOWED herself to act poorly, using her personal history as a means of justification, if you buy what she says. She could just have well have decided to use her past experiences to ENRICH her life and avoid the mistakes made by those around her. I'm not suggesting she need have stayed with her soon-to-be ex, but suggesting it's not her fault but the fault of her experiences is just lame.

It was probably a no go from the beginning. Even amatuer divorce watchers could have predicted this one ...

So, who was her husband exactly then?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh I am SHOCKED! Imagine! A dekichatta kekkon not working out. Amazed at this.

Sarcasm off.

on to ride the next wave, go go go surfer dude !!

As a professional surfer, her husband probably didn't earn enough for her.

Rie-chan has always had bad relationship karma. Takanohana, of course, found the right woman for him.

Rie is something of a basket case. Takanohana probably realized she was not the kind of traditionally minded woman to run a sumo stable and backed off, rightly so. Not long after their breakup she became emaciated from an eating disorder.

In the Japanese media, Rie discusses how the fact that due to her having grown up without knowing her own father, that this has had a negative impact on her emotionally and impaired her own ability to have relationships. http://exci.to/J1d0R1

I think that this is also part of the usual pattern of the breakdown of modern Japan.

lesson; don't get married...

NEXT!!!!!!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

If marriage is defined as the time they are together then the marriage lasted less than three weeks!

"Actress Rie Miyazawa, 39, who married a former professional surfer in 2009 after becoming pregnant..."

The usual pattern. Fans speculate something's up, the company denies any relationship. A month later they formally announce they are getting or have gotten married. Then a month later it's revealed the woman is pregnant. Within three years they divorce.

It's a shame, really, and I hope they both go on to bigger and better things and that the child doesn't suffer, but really if they're not 100% sure they love one another you shouldn't just marry because you knocked someone up (or got knocked up). The days of shot-gun weddings SHOULD be over -- they often end worse than if the two didn't get married but supported each other or what have you.

Interesting that for all of the digital technology available, 'talent' in Japan usually make their announcements via 'signed fax'. Guess it is less invasive than a press-conference.

Still have my copy of Santa-Fe, ground-breaking stuff at the time...
