Rinko Kikuchi stars in film about girl who went looking for 'Fargo' buried money

Fargo was great. They should have gotten the Coen Brothers on this too. Rinko Kikuchi seems to be one of the very few Japanese who can handle complex character roles in Hollywood movies.

So the writer of this movie understands that it is not true and in reality Takako was doing some sort of bizarre suicide as opposed to looking for treasure.

I wonder why not keep to the truth and make something of a psychological movie out of it.

That is to say, something where the entire movie seems to be about this treasure hunt but in the final scenes the truth comes out that she knows it's a farce all along and is just looking for an escape of reality/finally gives in to suicide.

Harvey P - Rinko's standout role was in Babel - nothing shallow at all. As I recall she was nominated for best supporting actress and many in glitter-land were surprised she lost.

And re Japanese actors shunning roles in foreign movies, I have read about that somewhere recently (sorry I forgot and cant be bothered checking up now) and apparently therei s truth in it. If you blow it or are not well received, it could mean ridicule and a big downer for your domestic career. So why risk it!

However, I don't believe young Japanese artists are held to that so much these days and we'll see more true talents emerging in the future.

I definitely want to watch this one.

I'm sure this is a well movie made but it seems too sad.

Ok, kudos to Rinko Kikuchi. She's not always given much in her American movie roles (Pacific Rim, Ronin 47, and Brothers Bloom were all pretty shallow characters) but she has made her niche as the go to Japanese actress for Hollywood just as Ken Watanabe has made himself the go to Japanese actor.

But, I know other Japanese actors and actresses have a good English ability, good enough anyway, do they shun Hollywood films or is it the lack of Asian characters in Hollywood films or do studios just cast on name recognition?

I'm honestly curious.

kaynide, yes, it was a "Japan is weird" story that was later debunked. Takako Konishi had been to America several times with a married man she was seeing. She spoke to him on the phone the day before she died, so it was most likely she was there in a last attempt to patch things up with him. Even though the name is changed in the movie, I think it is somewhat disrespectful to her family.

I would have preferred the "psychological" route too rather than the "treasure find story". I like Rinko though so if I'm up for a sad movie I'll check it out.

To be fair, the "treasure find story" is ALSO a "psychological route". The woman is repeatedly told that Fargo was fictitious, yet desperately refuses to consider it.

Maybe she's smart enough not to listen to a random comment thrown off by an anonymous entertainment reporter. How many blockbuster Japanese stars in USA? Or even Asian?

Rinko is fantastic, she is certainly one of Japan's truly outstanding actresses, so I will wait with much anticipation for this one.

It's not that interesting. The guy in the TV show found the money. What's left to put in the film?

I loved Rinko in Sideways. She's all class.

I hope that this is sold to Japanese women as "The price silly Japanese girls pay for wearing miniskirts in winter".

Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching this.

Thanks for the reply. I know Babel, but come on, her roles since is what I'm referring to. Brothers Bloom she didn't speak, in Pacific Rim no character had depth, and 47 Ronin she chewed up the scenery. I think she's great, just the material is weak.

I don't know. Maybe I'm just standing on my soapbox, I just know there are other actors here in Japan that can speak English and can act in the Hollywood style and it'd be nice if they made it in Hollywood, not that they need to to validate their career or anything, but I think it'd be nice if they got recognized by a wider audience for their talents.

Just curious if this was a common feeling of Japanese actors/actresses. I know Shibasaki Kou turned down Tarantino's Kill Bill. I mean, roles here in Japan are obviously plenty and somewhat more varied than what can be found in Hollywood.

I remember when this news story came out a decade ago. I thought it was funny (albeit of the black humor variety that permeated "Fargo") that Ms. Konishi chose to go looking for the briefcase full of cash during the winter season - because Steve Buschemi had buried the million dollars (minus the $80,000 he pocketed) IN THE SNOW.

Mocheake: I've no doubt the movie is intriguing, but definitely too low-brow for the Coen Brothers, far and away some of the best directors/story-tellers in the business. It's not complex enough, although they could make it more complex by stretching the truth even further. Now, if you REALLY want to see amazing watch the television series based on the movie/story, also written by the Coen Brothers. Season One was fantastic, and had an absolutely amazing cast. Can't wait to see what they do with season two, since that will not involve the original story at all... I would think.
