I think De Niro has made some great movies (and some real dross also). but his (and other actors) opinion about matters political is of little consequence to me (or to the world). Hlilliary surrounded herself with slebs and got endorsed by them too but still didn't make POTUS.

Love DeNiro the actor. But isnt threatening to punch a guy in the face and calling names just because he thinks differently than you do, isnt that being a punk and a bully yourself?

Yeah, to some degree. But to show the complete story, he was responding in turn to Trump's violent comments:

He talks about how he wants to punch people in the face? Well, I'd like to punch him in the face.

Looks like this year's season of "America" is going to keep entertaining!

5 ( +6 / -1 )

A celebrity has an opinion? That's nice. So did the voters. Now, go back to work.

-5 ( +13 / -18 )

Must really infuriate Republicans that there are really no famous actors or actresses left that side with them, and so that they can watch. But hey, they can still listen to Ted Nugent at least.

1 ( +10 / -9 )

Meryl Streep? The same actress who is a staunch supporter of Roman Polanski the convicted rapist? Hypocrite Hollywood mouthpieces love to pick and choose, I see.

Americans made their choice.Time to accept it and move on.

-1 ( +11 / -12 )

"Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners and if we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and Mixed Martial Arts, which are not the arts."

An anti-discrimination speech but then is clearly discriminating MMA and American Football? How are people really taking actors seriously... Way of the dodo America, don't listen to people who fake for a living.

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

talking about fake, trump will be on the very top list

4 ( +6 / -2 )

sigh

once again, neo liberalism is a mental disorder.

I want actors political opinions as much as I want dental work from a circus clown.

-4 ( +8 / -12 )

I don't really care what any celebrity thinks about politics.

But ... that doesn't mean that Mr. De Niro is wrong or that Ms. Streep's speech wasn't correct.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

@Iparry

You don't know what "discriminate" means.

Or, at least, you can't use it.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Wait a minute, isnt the MUSIC of Ted Nugent awesome regardless of which side he is on? He was famous at one time and he doesnt need to still be famous for me to still enjoy his musical talent.

Besides, I dont care about if someone is famous or their politics when I am being entertained. I dont expect an entertainer to give me my political views any more than I expect a politician to shred an awesome guitar solo. (Disclaimer: Bill Clinton did play a pretty mean saxaphone on TV once though)

"Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners and if we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and Mixed Martial Arts, which are not the arts."

I post the same thing again, beucase I want someody, English native speaker, to responde. I know some people, especially over twitter, criticize Meryl Streep because she said "MMA is not the arts".

But I think this is misinterpretation, and she only meant, MMA is categorized as "Sports", not "Arts", although there is a word "arts" in it. That's what she said.

You go to books store and find a martial arts book at Sports section, you wouldn't say "Hey, I feel offended, Martial arts can be arts."

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

@Hachikou, one official definition of arts is this:

the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

So what I thought was not that she was saying MMA is sports not arts. She was saying MMA and football have no skill or imagination and are not beautiful or have emotional power UNLIKE the movies she and her pompous friends create.

So saying MMA and football are not arts she then insulted all the people who like them (most Trump voters she thinks) by suggesting they have no culture as well.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

hachikou: I post the same thing again, beucase I want someody, English native speaker, to responde. I know some people, especially over twitter, criticize Meryl Streep because she said "MMA is not the arts".

She's virtue signalling by looking down on activities such as football and MMA, which the common people supposedly like. She (or whoever set up this speech for her) tried to be cute in connecting the 'arts' in MMA to the 'art' in 'the arts'.

'Virtue signalling' (美徳 感情) meaning she's trying to signal to others in her social group how virtuous (善良な) she is. (The translations are copied or hacked together from Google Translate so I don't know how accurate they are.)

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

once again, neo liberalism is a mental disorder.

We are never going to heal our problems by alienating each other with comments like this.

She's virtue signalling by looking down on activities such as football and MMA, which the common people supposedly like.

Which was stupid, as many liberals, both common and not, like both Football and MMA.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

So what? Why is there any weight to words of some celeb.. and a hollywood one at that..,he is welcome to his opinion but how is that news at all?

0 ( +6 / -6 )

We are gonna make him an offer he can't refuse.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Strangerland: Which was stupid, as many liberals, both common and not, like both Football and MMA.

Someone with that many nominations is very likely to be extremely career-oriented. But I guess it was more in the way of cementing her legacy than furthering her career.

So why should she care what football and MMA enthusiasts think about her scoring off them? The liberals among them will probably forgive her this. Her peers won't care if she hurts the feelings of the others.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Such quality against Trump. The only celebs on Trump's side are disgraced former child stars, D-list morons, and possible criminals

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

I love how people on this board vehemently insist celebrities' opinions don't matter and then completely fall to pieces when celebrities express opinions they don't like.

3 ( +9 / -6 )

Amusing so many Rebs having a hissy fit about how celebrities don't matter, but then go out and vote for an orange moron reality show celebrity and swoon over him like starstruck teenage girls

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Yeah, to some degree. But to show the complete story, he was responding in turn to Trump's violent comments:

Will you always try explain away every action? Two wrongs have never made a right!! Call them both out for being wrong and skip the excuses.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Will you always try explain away every action?

Where did I explain anything? Quote please.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

And it was, it was !

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The comment about Streep supporting Polanski reminded me of my mother telling me in the early 70's she didn't like John Lennon because he supported the mafia. ( Her line of reasoning, buy a bag of weed, you support the...well you get it)

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I wish Nunes can show her Mixed Martial Arts to Marryl.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

I thought her speech was great too! She is clearly more intelligent than the president-elect.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

@Disillusioned

"She is clearly more intelligent than the president-elect."

I've heard of damning with faint praise, but that's ridiculous....

1 ( +2 / -1 )

She is panderer. She never cared about the disabled until it suited her agenda. Lip service at its worse - all her 100's of millions of dollars are in her corporation or overseas banks accounts where tax and spend liberals will never get their hands on.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I do not like it when actors and actresses leverage their celebrity status to impress their political views on me. That belief holds true for other people in power, including CEOs (paging Howard Schultz and Eric Schmidt). Reason being, a CEO's job is to run a company, not impress their values on me.

These days though, in Hollywood circles, Streep's antics would be well-received. She is a talented actress, but when I flip through the channels and come across one of her movies, I see the activist almost as much as the character she attempts to portray and that hinders my enjoyment of the film to the extent that I typically find something else to watch. This dynamic is the downside of activist entertainers. I vote with my wallet at Starbucks too for the same primary reason.

Decades ago, reporters asked Elvis Presley on his view on the Vietnam War. Elvis replied that his job is an entertainer and he keeps his political views to himself. Classy response. Hollywood, take note from The King.

I think many in the Trump camp think of David Duke as a celebrity. He has rock star status among most Trumpers. So you can't say they don't have their sleb support.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The Election was finished and Donald Trump has won it. Donald Trump will be your President soon if you like him or not. It doesn't matter now. Move on. Don't abuse your microphone and your celebrity power.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

My issue with Streep's speech is that the outrage is selective. She's outraged by what Trump might do, but she was silent when the Obama administration wiretapped the Associated Press. She was silent when the Obama administration wiretapped James Rosen and his family. She was silent when the Obama administration hacked into Sharyl Attkisson's computer and pressured CBS News to shut down her reporting. She was silent when the Obama administration got the court to rule that it could force a journalist to testify against a source (Jeffrey Sterling). She was silent when Obama made it black letter law that he could jail someone indefinitely without charging them if he suspected complicity with terrorists (the NDAA). For that last one journalists challenged that in court arguing that it could be interpreted to allow the jailing of reporters simply for interviewing a terrorist like Mike Wallace did with bin Laden. The journalists lost. I have little use for uninformed demagogues - whether they're being sworn in as president or accepting awards for acting.

This should be a no brainer article of the support of common decency. But all the comment rage, the number of Trumpets adding everyday, it just increases, instead of calling things out and toning it down. USAers rise more and more against their former successes. If people can't stop, USA's hateful rise will continue to its inevitable fascist conclusions.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Where did I explain anything? Quote please.

But to show the complete story, he was responding in turn to Trump's violent comments:

Like I said, two wrongs don't make a right!!

I think many in the Trump camp think of David Duke as a celebrity.

I think most people either that love Trump or not don't know who David Duke is.

He has rock star status among most Trumpers. So you can't say they don't have their sleb support.

Can you prove that? In other words, you are saying even 8% of Blacks that supported Trump are also Duke supporters??? Well, I have just learned something new.

Must really infuriate Republicans that there are really no famous actors or actresses left that side with them, and so that they can watch.

As with the video I posted earlier, I think liberals really ONLY care about Hollyweird and what they think. That's why when they get together, it's a giant body of liberal ego, self-centered, self-loathing lemmings. A lot of them make good movies, they entertain us, but that's pretty much where it ends. Fun for awhile, but you wouldn't want to take them home to meet your parents.

But hey, they can still listen to Ted Nugent at least

Hey! anyone that can play a mean guitar and loves to hunt and can make awesome deer chili, I'm paying gladly to listen and hang out with them.

Donald Trump's celebrity supporters: Actors, athletes, politicians and more - November 18, 2016

President-elect Donald Trump has a "huge" backing of notable supporters -- from celebrities to sports figures to politicians.

If the president elect who is very busy takes time to notice you and tweet about you, then you must be a significant person. Congratulations on being that important! Keep up the good work and 'wear' the tweet as a badge of Honor!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Of course it takes one leftist Hollywood opinionated actor/actress to praise the other one based on both their emotion based two-cents worth of perspective. Makes watching these wonderful actors sticking us with their liberal world-view any chance they get hard to stomach any more. Advice to these and other screen icons: just shut up and act. Spare us your wisdom gained in the bubble of privilege and adoration.

To disagree with the sentiment is to publicly support the notion of belittling the disabled in public just like Trump. That's called being a brown shirt and I'm glad that you've been called out.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Where did I explain anything? Quote please.

But to show the complete story, he was responding in turn to Trump's violent comments

And how exactly does showing the complete story explain away his actions?

This sums up how most Americans feel about Hollywood.

Most Americans didn't even vote for Trump. Most voters didn't even vote for Trump. So it's a pretty safe bet that most Americans don't feel the way you think they feel.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

America president elect Trump can be foolishly impersonated (like Alec Baldwin impersonates Trump in SNL)but the elect president can't foolishly impersonate a person. Is it fair? just asking....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

De Niro wrote. “I have so much respect for you that you did it while the world was celebrating your achievements. I share your sentiments about punks and bullies. Enough is enough.”

Was the "world" celebrating Streep's achievement? I doubt that most of the "world" was even aware that this award show was taking place? Not everyone follows the trials and tribulations of the Hollyweird-types as closely as the play-actor's agents would like them to. Of course I mean before Trump pointed out Streep's whining and lies. After Trump defended himself, many of the news medias jumped at the chance to cover the story.

De Niro, for his part, made a splash during this campaign season in a viral video, calling Trump “a pig,” ‘‘an idiot” and “a mutt, who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”

De Niro not only plays a bully during his play acting, he is actually a bully in real life. That's good to know.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

@Mike L

Looks like this year's season of "America" is going to keep entertaining!

That's a good way to put it. I guess all the reality shows were not enough. It had to be done at a presidential level.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Streep and De Niro are spot on. Good on them for helping to wake some more Americans up.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

De Niro not only plays a bully during his play acting, he is actually a bully in real life. That's good to know.

Then I guess he'll be a good choice to play Trump in a movie about him someday.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

He would. Jon Voight wouldn't. I'm with Jon Voight.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

serendipitous - Streep and De Niro are spot on. Good on them for helping to wake some more Americans up.

Play actors Streep and De Niro campaigned for Hillary Clinton. It looks like these two may have awoken more Trump, and anti-Hillary, voters than they did Hillary voters. If they really wanted Hillary to win, play actors Streep and De Niro should have campaigned for Trump.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

DeNiro could certainly give Trump a run for his money since both of them are phenomenal actors in and out of the circus called Hollywood.
