I remember reading that John Lennon regarded Chuck Berry as a superb lyricist along with everything else:

Milo Venus was a beautiful lass She had the world in the palm of her hand But she lost both arms in a wrestling match To get a brown eyed handsome man She fought and won herself a brown eyed handsome man

Magnificent lyrics.

Chuck Berry - up there with any of the greats of modern music.

Anyone playing rock and roll music owes him a huge debt. A brilliant lyricist and guitarist who brought joy to millions.

He had to fight relentlessly against America`s deep racism to claim his rightful place as a pioneer of the genre. Accept him for what he was and forgive him when he fell short of our expectations. Rest peacefully Chuck, your music will never die.

I hope some of his new work makes it to our ears. My favorite tune if his is It Goes To Show You Never Can Tell. That had to be the catchiest song ever. You know those rockabilly bands that play in public parks in Japan? They will be remembering. Go film them and put it up on YouTube.

John Lennon said, "if you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry'."

Sad day for rock and roll. Maybellene is going to miss him playing with her. I know that every guitarist has at least one Chuck Berry riff in there quiver. Even if they don't play it now, they would have played it in their learning years. Might have to get my Black Beauty out and belt out Johnny Be Good to let my neighbors know he has passed.

Rest in peace, Mr. Berry.

I saw him perform live, here in Tokyo, duck walk and all. My life is complete.

Ever since I was a kid, watching the scene where Marty sang "Johnny B. Goode" in Back to the Future, I was immediately hooked. I had to search the original singer, and it was the legend himself, Chuck Berry. He's the reason why I started learning guitar. It's really no surprise why and how he inspired several generations of people. The man who outlived most of the legends he inspired. He lives forever.

There was an effortlessness and playful, inventive (nonsensical) phrasing to his lyrics that is simply glorious. I love Elvis also but not for that reason. :)

I thought I saw in a movie somewhere that he learned his signature style from a time travelling white preppy kid. Was that wrong?

"Roll Over Beethoven and tell Tchaikovsky the news..." That's one meeting I'd like to hear.
