Musician Masahiro Kuwana has died of respiratory failure. He was 59.

The rock singer passed away in Osaka on Friday, Sankei Shimbun reported. He had been hospitalized in a coma since July after he collapsed at his home.

Kuwana made his singing debut in 1976 with the album "Who are you?" His fourth single, "Sexual Violet No. 1," became a hit when it was used as a theme song for cosmetics maker Kanebo.

Kuwana was arrested and served a three-year term for the possession of cocaine in 1977. When he got out in 1980, he became an actor and starred in his first drama, "Koibito-tachi." In 1980, he later married singer Ann Lewis but the couple divorced four years later.
