Rola plays Marie Antoinette in TV ad campaign for GU

Model and TV personality Rola, 24, who is the campaign girl for casual clothing brand GU, or the “Goddess of GU," is appearing in a series of five TV commercials for 1,490-yen skirts, dressed like Marie Antoinette.

In the series of five commercials, each about 15 seconds long, Rola speaks in English to her attendants about the importance and role of skirts in women's lives, passing judgement on various styles. At least, she doesn't say "Let them eat cake."

I love everything about Laura. This is a great series of commercials. I especially like the very last scene in the last commercial.

This tarento is annoying. She's everywhere. She's not even talented.

These commercials make me grin. She is a comedian.

You can sort of tell she's speaking English, but it's not at all easy to make out what she is saying.

Speaking in English to play a French queen, typical Japan...

Rather odd choice isn't it? Fun commercials..but kinda wtf.

I asked my wife about it...

My reaction:

"This is stupid isn't it? I mean the commercials are fine...but why Marie Antoinette? They're selling skirts to the common person here, so why choose a French leader so out of touch with her people that she was beheaded? Additionally, (as Quasar said), why is she speaking English? It's not like this is for an English speaking audience."

My wife, however, had some insight:

"Japanese people don't think about that. When we hear about Marie Antoinette, we think of an extremely aloof, rich woman with "gorgeous" fashion. It's what all Japanese probably think, especially with the Rose of Versailles anime. Besides, it's just a commercial...aren't you over thinking it?"

.> yeah...

@Kaynide Marie Antoinette was Austrian. So although she was married to the king of France, the French people were not really her people. In fact she was disliked in France.

Advertisements are not news. Neither are they entertainment - Japanese TV please take note.

@Mountainpear: I understand what you mean, but I didn't mean "her people" as in "people sharing her ancestry" so much as "the people she is ruling"; Perhaps I should have said "her subjects"?

If only I had small shoulders.

I'm glad Japan hasn't tried to blacklist her with the issues around her father, though they inevitably were unable to charge him with anything. I was hoping they could separate the two and it seems they have so that's my positive spin on this.

Better than her squeaky weekend "chatshow" appearances.

LOL "How disgusting"

Really hard to understand not only her English sometimes but the other individuals as well. Well as long as they are white they fit the bill.
