Sashihara, Yamamoto named Best Smile of the Year Award winners

HKT48 singer Rino Sashihara, 19, and actor Yusuke Yamamoto, 25, are the recipients of the Best Smile of the Year Awards 2013.

The awards are given each year on Nov 8, which is Good Teeth Day, by the Japan Dental Association during a ceremony to promote good teeth.

Good Teeth Day was created in 1993 to celebrate proper oral hygiene by a joint effort of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare and the Japan Dental Association. November 8 was chosen for this day because the date can be read as “ii ha” or “good teeth” in Japanese.

The Best Smile awards are the latest in a long list of awards handed out to celebrities this time of year to promote various industries.

STOP THE INSANITY! Enough of the pointless awards, please I'm begging you. If you give awards for everything, it diminishes their value. Next there will be an award for most-properly-tied recycle bag, or most respectful bow by a store employee to a customer.

If it encourages more people to brush their teeth, who cares?

don't give them ideas!

Not really. I think people are smart enough to figure out the difference between the nicest smile award, and a Nobel peace prize. The former doesn't take away from the latter.

Okay. I watched the first minute and not one smile was to be seen. If they cannot manage to even smile in the first minute, I cannot manage to sit through the next eight minutes to see if they actually smile.

They're both cute, especially Rino!

first few minutes (with camera panning and recording them) no smiles. They looked like they were caught by surprised and don't know that they won, er, an award for best smiles.

@ Strangerland

"I think people are smart enough to figure out the difference between the nicest smile award, and a Nobel peace prize."

Oh really? Then why did president Obama win a Nobel Prize literally for giving a couple of speeches, when others have worked their whole lives to earn theirs?

Good point.

Anyway, best smile award, best jeans award, best legs award, best glasses wearing award... how many in one week (granted, the jeans were not this week)?

I suggest we make a list of future awards for Japan tarento. I'll start:

Best Pantaloon Wearer Award

Best Contact Lens Wearer Award

Most Beautiful Sequin Cowboy Shirt Award

Greatest Tobacco-Stained Smile Award

Best Lotion Applicant Award

Best Mismatched Socks Award

Best Lady-Gaga Imitation Award

Best Cooker Of Instant Noodles Award

etc.

Great initiative plasticmonkey, hopefully your surroundings will support you. Glad not to be part of it. I love Yusuke kun btw, those eyes always have a naughty effect on me.

STOP all these stupid awards!!

These two are sporting nothing more than SEGs, by the way.

Good teeth do not have a monopoly on smiles. I demand an apology from the JDA! And I'm going to stop brushing my teeth to protest this travesty!
