Sean Ono Lennon on remixing father's music: It was therapy

To just not hold back. To just sort of sing. I have this fear that when I push my voice, I sound too much like him, but what’s the point of singing if I’m not going to sound good?

Sean shouldn't be so hard on himself. Last year I saw the son of another Beatle. His voice has some similarities to his Fab Father's too but his music is more modern. It's for today, now. Dhani Harrison is just being himself, his own way even with George's influence. Sean Ono Lennon should do the same and worry about the comparisons.

BTW, yes Dhani Harrison writes about 'peace and love and God' but his music is 21st Century. And Sean should be himself for this century too. He'll do fine creatively, just watch.

It's often tough for children of famous artists to get by on their own merit, but some do.

Jeff Buckley, Baxter Dury and Miley Cyrus are the first who spring to mind.

Exactly how John thought.

A no talent wannabe.

His own music was unbearable to hear, the one with the real talent and musical sense was Julian.

Unfortunately, just like when she forbade John from seeing, mentioning or acknowledging Julian , Yoko made sure Julian would never make music again by intimidation of record companies, stations, etc...if they produced or played his music, going as far as withholding his inheritance until he agreed to give up music, because apparently she said only Sean is the rightful heir to John's Legacy.

Julian really is musically talented.

As for Yoko, she had Julian tied up in court for years as a young man, trying to get his share of John’s will. Yoko was doleing out pennys from the will to Julian for years. He framed and gas on the wall a check for 50cents that she mailed to him!

You know all musical taste is entirely subjective right? Each to their own.

But saying he has no talent and is a “wannabe” are provably wrong, whether you like his music or not.

I met Julian at the LA garlic festival in 1994 and the guy was beyond cool, but he really did get shafted by Ono and the guy really tried to get along with her, but she was just never accepting of him, it was just so sad and you could see the hurt in his face and hear it in his voice and the kid wanted to be so close to his dad and Ono wouldn't allow it. I wish he would do a lot more musically because the guy is just so good and talented.

I remember when I was 18 and Julian scored his first hit and people loved it because it reminded them of them of John. His next hit reflected his regrets about knowing his Fab dad, and the production was more '80s'. Later he had a notorious video with sexy chicks and Michael J. Fox in it for good measure but critics didn't like it. His third album he stretched out more, trying to sing like Bowie. I thought that was cool but some Beatles purists didn't. 

And that's the problem when your dad is Fab. The pressure is on, they want you to follow the footsteps. I've seen a movie about Hank Williams, Jr. and it was the same way but he managed to make his own persona and identity. 

Julian is good and talented.

Sean is good and talented.

Dhani Harrison is good and talented.

But these artists need and want to be recognized as themselves. When I saw Dhani last year (he was the opener for 'Jeff Lynne's' ELO) he performed only his music. However he did guest w/ Jeff on stage to perform a Travelling Wilburys song in George's place. 

Julian, Sean and Dhani are better off not riding on their Fab dads' coattails.

She really believes that baring the vocal is the worst thing you can do.

Im pretty sure Sean said, ‘burying the vocal’.
