Sequels, once a sure thing, are slumping at the box office

"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

Fool me many times as has become increasingly the case with sequels, remakes and the like, and even the fools start to wise up. I was only reading today that The Who are being publicly critical of a follow-up to the cult movie Quadrophenia (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36481894), producer and band manager Bill Curbishley putting it brilliantly when he stated that "Quadrophenia is a significant and influential film based on The Who's music, not some Carry On franchise".

That's not to say that the Carry On franchise was bad as a result of so many different versions, but note that the franchise involved many different ideas and stories and didn't wholly rely on a prior idea to prop it up. If anything, I'd probably refer to the Police Academy franchise rather than the Carry On franchise.

Hollywood, as I've said so many times in the past, is currently creatively bankrupt. Hopefully somebody will find a way to make it start doing worthwhile things again but for now all we get are superheroes, flashy effects, retells, remakes, reboots and not a lot of originality.

Saw the Zoolander sequel and while I am a huge fan of the original, this one was pretty awful. Pretty rare for comedy sequels to hold up to the original.

Watch the non-sequel films, folks!

As for TMNT, they are annoying at best. Watched the 1st one with my sons and also the old one when I was a kid. Do not like it at all.

Ghostbusters is a remake, not a sequel.

There's nothing original out there...prequels, sequels and remakes. It gets boring after a while. How many times can you 'reimagine' (recycle) something?

Whatever makes a quick buck. There seems to be a big push on TV shows now with higher budgets and scale and lots of streaming platform exclusive originals being made. I think people are seeing better quality from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc shows than many cinema titles. Shows like The Flash, Jessica Jones, House of Cards, Community, Orange is the New Black, and many more offer more and keeps the audience coming back.

Unless it is Star Wars or some Marvel movies, it probably won't make as much.

Well the TMNT movies now suck so that might be the reason for those.But it depends on the movie and how popular it is too.

I wouldn't say people are sick of sequels, but more sick of the attitude that studios have a free pass to produce garbage as long as the first installment was successful. Sequels in general tend to be of far inferior quality to the preceding films and this naturally angers viewers. Keep quality high and people will keep watching

A clue to the reason for the demise of Hollywood movies - sequels or one-offs - is the credits at the end. There seem to be millions of people involved in the making of one movie.

Hollywood movies are designed by committees.

Thats true...I have stopped watching franchise movies from last couple of years. Its just too boring, monotonous and an overdoze of special effects, sci-fi stuff many a times hiding the weakness of the script.

As in any other field the more the technology gets cheaper the more such crap stuff would be churned out periodically.

Ironically this makes a normal movie(say non scifi and non horror) a lot more soothing to our senses and interesting.

Perhaps because they are overdoing it and turning the big screen into a television screen and only telling part of a story with a promise for the next part two years later. People don't need that, and can watch TV at home for a WHOLE lot cheaper; and it's a whole lot better these days, to boot. Plus with Netflix and Hulu and what not, who wants to pay so much for said story segments?
