Is there even any semblance of communism in China anymore? No 29th anniversary of Mao's cultural revolution or a 43rd anniversary of his Great Leap Forward? Do they still carry around that little red book?

Fizzbit, China hasn't been properly Communist for decades.

@fizzbit: you must be in a 30 year timewarp if you think China is still gripped in Maoism or Communism.

Back on topic please.

You mean that photo of Mao at Tiananmen Square is only for show?

In the simplest and most reductionist terms possible... yes, pretty much.

More accurately, it's probably a bit more like how so many Christian churches in the US hang a prominent depiction of Christ on the wall as they preach a prosperity theology utterly at odds with the ideas espoused by Christ. It's not uncommon at all for organizations to radically shift their dogma away from the ideals of their founders while at the same time paying lip-service to idealizing those same founders.

The People's Republic of China might have "People's" in their name, and might be run in an authoritarian manner by a Communist Party, but in terms of daily life are hardly Communist at all. In fact, the Chinese free market is in many ways more free than it is in most capitalist countries, which is why you can go and buy pirate IP and counterfeit brand goods in shopping malls without the government caring.

'Fan Bingbing' as a 'normal' actress name is a tad tragic considering just how close a name that could be for someone working in the 'adult film' industry. Two letters N and Y added to her Fan and you're golden, um, no pun intended. Really.

I guess the same could be said for Hollywood flicks but I find a lot of Chinese movies have the same look and feel making it seem like they simply cut-n-pasted 80% of each movie to the next. The Chinese have their flying through the air kung-fu, the U.S. with its blow'd it up good and don't look back and India with its couple dancing while singing around the one lone tree in the middle of nowhere. Oh well, whatever floats your boat.

Japan has been getting closer and closer for years with the best films out of Hollywood being copies of Japanese classics....has Nippon film industry finally surpassed the American?

@knowbetter: you really don't know any better about Fan Bingbing's name. The surname Fan (pronounced faahn) could mean model, example, or pattern. Bingbing is the equivalent of Coco, Mimi or Lulu. Do comedian Fanny Brice or actress Fanny Ardent sound like pornstars to you?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@ akkk1, yes Ardent Fanny does sound like a pornstar to me. The point was more on the sound of the name in English as clearly this wasn't a problem when she was only in Chinese movies but when crossing over to English audiences comes the risk that if your name sounds or could sound like something else, well that's a shame. Case in point with cars names just as an example, the Mitsubishi Pajero or Pajero Jr would NEVER be sold seriously under that name in South America. Don't get it? Clearly then you missed the point of my first post. A lot of people miss the obvious because they choose to. It's that simple. If you plan to make it big, what up and comer doesn't, then it's best to plan well ahead. Bada Bing!

@knowbetter: If she prefers maintaining her Chinese name and identity, more power to her. It didn't hurt Chow Yunfat. Nor are Hollywood stars required to adopt Chinese names as they flood into the China and Asian markets.

@akkk1, hmmm Chow Yunfat vs Jet Li. Now there's thinking ahead.
