Why have a foreign film category when you give best picture to a foreign film?. Are they abolishing the foreign / non English language category now?.

Imagine the message this sends out to aspiring American film makers, you have no chance.

Look forward to an American film winning best picture at the Japanese award ceremony now, yep, never going to happen.

Is this movie any good? Judging by reviews and trailers, it looks like a snoozefest.

You misunderstand the categories. Best foreign film nomination criteria is for films that have not received a wide cinema release in The US.

To be nominated for best picture does not require a film to be in English or made by American film makers, it never has.

Do you know for example how many British movies have won best picture?

I saw it and really enjoyed it.

It is a bit long, but if you stream it at home it's no big deal.

On an emotional level it reminds me of Yojiro Takita's "Departures" which won an Oscar in 2008 for Best Foreign Film.

It's well-written and if you understand Japanese I think you may really enjoy it.

Watched it on US HBO Max over a VPN yesterday. 3 hours passed quickly. Not a LOTR/Avengers type of movie so don’t bother if you only like those things. Makes you think and feel. Won’t say it was my favorite, but it was worth 3 hours of my time for sure

Is it a fossil fuel combustion engine car with a zero carbon footprint and made from all recycled materials ?

Probably a waste of electricity watching it then.

Used to be a resident in Hiroshima where local scenes appear in the movie, I look forward to seeing it sometime (I avoid crowded theatres).

Would have to be pretty desperate for entertainment.

It was okay. It reminded me of older JP movies with their more relaxed pace and low-key acting, as opposed to the silly manga-based stuff that is so common nowadays. I'm thinking most of Ozu's films, or some of Kurosawa's early stuff.

It kept my attention for the entire three hours. But, I didn't find it Oscar-worthy. There was nothing exceptional about it. The story, script, acting, cinematography, and editing were all decent. But, nothing really stood out. The editing was the one aspect that could have really been better. Not so much to make it shorter, but to improve the story flow.

Finally, the epilogue was unclear. After three hours, I don't want to wonder exactly how things ended up for the main characters. They provide some info. But, there are numerous possibilities based on that info. (Due to spoilers, I can't get into the details.)

The interview took place while the filmaker was quarantining in a hotel in Japan. That in itself is intriguing to me.

Saw this film the other night. It is truly remarkable, but I personally would not give it a best picture award, either in foreign language, or in the mainstream best picture category.

IMO, in order to get best picture, a film has to make me want to come back and watch it over and over again.
