NTT West has appointed pop singer Ai Otsuka as the "ambassador" for its new "Smart Hikari Heart Beat Project.”

The project was launched to connect people more closely by using heart beats. NTT will collect heart beats from over 10,000 people by collaborating with the NPOs Fathering Japan, Mommies Summit and Otsuka at events through October. Using the collected heart beats, Otsuka will compose an original song by December and release it to the public.

“Recently there is less warmth in communication. We would like to provide this project as a new means of communication so people can feel close to others by hearing their heart beats,” said NTT West President Kazutoshi Murao. “As a new communication tool, heart beats may connect people.”

NTT West is planning to use a new app, “Doki Doki Kodo Haishin Apuri,” which enables people to record their heart beats just by wearing a Hitoe T-shirt embedded with nano-fibers that can recognize heart beats.

Otsuka said, “This is my very first time to compose a song using material such as heart beats. I cannot imagine what kind of song it will be, so I am excited.”

According to NTT West, the new communication tool has potential for sports broadcasts by showing the athletes’ heart beats or for pregnant women and fathers-to-be to feel their babies' heart beats and so on.

As much as I hate Softbank, the contrast between them & NTT in terms of "moving forward" is alarming.
