Why are the Japanese obsessed with the success or failure of Japanese films?

Why are the Japanese obsessed with the success or failure of Japanese films?

As opposed to other countries, who clearly don't give a toss?

Don't be such a troll, Richard I ! It's an honor (and more importantly a massive financial boost) to win, specially in such an underrated category. The Oscars, ideally, encourage people to watch films that normally wouldn't get the time of day.

I just read that Japan's "Departures" just won for best foreign film. With the lovely Ryoko Hirosue. It means box office gold for that film now.

Penn gleefully told the crowd: “You commie, homo-loving sons of guns.”

Showing his true colors?

Epic winz for Heath, who deserved it. It's too bad he's gone.

This was indeed a more entertaining Oscar show than I've seen in years, and I have little argument with most of the winners...

Did anyone notice the Academy's big blooper during the memorial to those of the industry who passed over the last year? Under the heading of "Ichikawa Kon" (the famed director who died last year) they showed a clip of Mikuni Rentaro (who is very much alive at 86, and probably surprised to hear otherwise)...

Sorry Heath, but I did find your performance a bit over done. RIP

I wonder if members of the academy, and Sean Penn himself, know anything more about Harvey Milk other than that he was an assasinated gay politician?

Midnight,

if they watched the movie, they might know a bit more. You think?

Loved the Fey/Martin presentation that took a shot at the goofy scientology science fiction plot they call a religion. Too bad Cruise was not in the audience. He may have started to jump on his seat again like he did with Oprah.

It was a little embarassing to watch Bill Maher trying to plug his so-called documentary in support of "intelligent design." For a man of such supposed intelligence, his backing of this production is truly inexplicable, and his flogging of it--several times in his short time on stage--lacked class.

I thought Hollywood was Amero-centric. Why so few American names in the awards?

Slumdog gets 8 awards, this will boost more British-hollywood california-bombay film JVs .

More JVs like this can, create a more bigger audience with Indian and English speaking nations market.

With Britains unique diverse culture and creativity, the success of Slumdog comes as no surprise to me at all.

It took a Brit to teach indians (BollyWood) that you don't need actors to jump about miming to songs for 3 long hours. Also there are other story lines apart from two separated brothers one turns out to be a criminal the other a copper only to have a face off when their parts corss at the end, obviousliy the copper wins and they live happily ever after. Reality in Mumbai is not as depicted in Bollywood films. I find Bollywood actors so up themsleves i don't believe they really give dame about the less fortunate.

JasUK-

Bollywood actors so up themselves,I don't believe they really give a damn about the less fortunate.

I agree with this view. In fact all india's rich does not give a damn. I am not surprised if bollywood actors and india's rich act the same.

India government should add a welfare tax to bollywood movie tickets, to help spread wealth to less fortunate.

We need more bollywood actors to be like Mia farrow, george clooney and others.

Mickey Rourke sadly didnt win, probably because the Oscar hosts were terrified what he might say after his cracking acceptance speech at the independent film awards

I do not like any of the awarded movies. Hollywood makes films with no heart and soul...

p.s. the hottest guys on planet Roorke and Pitt deserved oscars though.

Sean Penn is a jack ass

So I see everybody from slumdog was pattin each other on the back yet the little kids in the film made what 3k each.

would he have gotten it, if he was still alive?

"Japan" did not win an Oscar, the film did.

Well, I STILL haven't come down from my Academy high. Sean Penn won best actor for his astounding portrayal of gay icon Harvey Milk, who was a true leader, and would probably have become America's first gay president if he hadn't been killed by some insane hater.

Now that President Obama has replaced bush, who was the worst president ever, the BEST actor in the world was able to safely address the crowd, “You commie, homo-loving sons of guns.”

This made me feel closer than ever to Sean.
