SMAP's Kimutaku eager to try role as neuroscientist in new TV drama

SMAP's Takuya Kimura, 36, will play the leading role of a neuroscientist in the new TBS television drama "Mr. Brain," which starts May 23 at 7:56 p.m. He will portray a neuroscientist serving at the National Police Agency's National Research Institute of Police Science, who uncannily solves difficult cases within the agency. Up until now, Kimura, popularly known as Kimutaku, has lent his talents to a variety of roles, including prime minister, but this will be his first attempt at playing a neuroscientist.

Taking a break from filming, Kimura said: "I had so many questions when I learned that I'd be put in a position like this." He went on to say that, while he feels lost at times, he's excited to take on the new challenge because, "the story and situation are open to a wide variety of possibilities. I hope to really flesh out the character as I go along."

He's a BIG STAR in JAPAN and been in the entertainment for so long...have you guys ever seen his drama and finished it?

Sounds like they took "Dr. House" and...

House is a doctor solving medical issues. And there is about a zero chance that Kimura could hold a candle to the acting skills of Hugh Laurie as House. Or even as a musician for that matter.

Sounds more like Numbers..... A mathematician helping solve crimes with the FBI. And... the acting skills of the main characters match!

Ms. Brain, anyone? Interesting how they've casted a woman in a man's role. O' brave producers of J-dorama, we salute thee!

I was talking with K-girl the other day, and she said "Oh he's one of us".

most of his dramas have become classics.

I think you're using the word "classic" in the Japanese sense, which is comparable to the term "famous".

"Utsunomiya is famous for towels"

No, it isn't. People who are duped into going there buy towels because there is nothing else there. That doesn't make it famous. Similarly, the fact that lots of people without the wit to do anything else saw Kimutaku's previous, dreary drama-by-numbers does not make the pabulum "classic"

It's a shame Japan isn't interested in hiring true actors to play in these ultimately forgettable dramas. This is obviously a blatant rip-off of the premise on which "House M.D." is based,

You have so much time around here, don't you? You talk too much yet you don't know what you're talking about. Forgettable dramas? True actors? Kimura has won many awards for his acting and most of his dramas have become classics. And what if it's a rip-off? doesn't Hollywood remake Japanese movies?

Paulie- I most certainly do.

"Mr. Brain"

That would be an excellent name for a rock band.

He may fall down at some stage.

hahahaha. great work Ivan.

Not a bad idea that - or it could be the lovable grandpa who remembers hospitals after the war and is proud of Kimutaku, but gets "confused" (Alzheimers) and wanders off into the night and is found the following day...

Blimey, we should be writing this...

Good one Ivan... And I bet you 10,000 yen that at some point in the drama, the following line will be spoken with urgency: "Okaasan taoretano!" Followed by the family's mad rush to the hospital when all realize how important the mom is...

Does anyone else think he looks a bit like a girl? I think it's the way he does his hair.

I expect this drama will reach the same high standards of the rest of J-Drama. He will encounter a crotchety elder whom he comes to love and respect, and will shout, close to tears, at a point of frustration. He may fall down at some stage.

One of the nurses will be noisy and boisterous in a charming, earthy way, but she will be unattractive and played for laughs. The hero will fall in love with the quiet one who was initially a) very shy or b) a bit frosty.

He will confront authority/the status quo and emerge victorious. This is, after all, a work of fiction.

combinibento

Meanwhile, Kimutaku is a fine dancer but not much else.

Kimura san...a dancer ? Where have you been in the last ten years ? He is a very fine actor so not any more a "talento" !

He is the best of the SMAP group, and is usually on key, but the others are never on key when singing solo. This show will be popular because chicks think the guy is a heart throb.

That is laughable, IMO. He is on the boob tube a lot more than the other 4 is for sure. Every woman I know hates him, so I wonder how he gets all this air time. Truthfully, they can all go away, but then we got more JB's to deal with. Oh, the horror.

It's a shame Japan isn't interested in hiring true actors to play in these ultimately forgettable dramas. This is obviously a blatant rip-off of the premise on which "House M.D." is based, as duly noted by WolfSheep. The reason "House M.D." is such a superior show, however, is because the producers have hired top acting talent (and script writers) to work on the show. Hugh Laurie rocks. Meanwhile, Kimutaku is a fine dancer but not much else. Too bad the society here is satisfied by seeing the same 10 or so "talentos" playing in every drama that ever existed here...

Sounds like they took "Dr. House" and copied it for the local market. Im interested to see what it looks like when it comes out - but im not holding my breath.

Mr. Brian would be more accurate.

Definitely a fictional drama....

....or will the police be watching for guidance, like some doctors watch ER?

surely to be an Oscar contender....

This drama should be popular with lobotomy patients.
