Snoopy Museum scheduled to open in Tokyo’s Roppongi

As the glitzy center of Tokyo’s nightlife scene, Roppongi is best known for its high-profile dance clubs, high-class restaurants and high-cover charge bars. But even if you’ve got no interest in dancing, dining or drinking, there’s a new attraction coming to the neighborhood: the Snoopy Museum. Set to open in March of 2016, the Snoopy Museum Tokyo is a cooperative effort between local agent Sony Creative Products and the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in California, named for the creator of the comic strip in which the beloved beagle starred. The Snoopy Museum (note the absence of the Peanuts name, which Schulz is said to have never been very fond of) will display original artwork, vintage memorabilia and other related artifacts on loan from the Research Center on a rotating, six-month basis.

The Tokyo site will also house a themed café (perhaps similar to the one created in conjunction with Tower Records last year) and souvenir shop with exclusive items. Seasonal events will be held for Halloween and Christmas, two holidays that have become extremely popular in Japan and which each served as the basis for a memorable Charlie Brown animated special.

Advance tickets will become available this December, with pricing details yet to be announced. Oddly enough, the Snoopy Museum is being planned as a non-permanent facility and is tentatively scheduled to close its doors for good in September 2018, so don’t put off that trip too long.

I was raised on Snoopy and his fights against the Red Baron, and who hasn't felt like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football.

If they can make this museum even half of what the absolutely amazing Ghibli Museum is, I'm there.

Could they have chosen a place any more not suited for children?

Roppongi in the day and Roppongi at night are different things.

I played SNOOPY in "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" in Yokosuka, Japan. I LOVED the part. I even had children come up after the show to ask if they could pet me. The VERY best critique I received was from a young boy who said, "Hey, you're not a real dog!" WOW!

Actually, that neighbourhood in Roppongi is pretty high end. The International House of Japan is around there and there is an elementary school and nursery school in that neighbourhood as well.

Given that this is a "temporary" facility, I would imagine that this is an arrangement for a plot which will eventually be redeveloped and probably a special deal was struck with the owner and developer. Just speculation.

Anyway, we should also keep in mind that the fans of Peanuts are, in fact, probably not primarily children these days. Unless they are children of parents who are fans. Not that it matters, but my guess is that this came into play when picking a location.

Good idea. Help Roppongi become a bit more family friendly. Love Peanuts, love Snoopy, and am thankful to Charles Schultz for his wonderful creation. Been a Charlie Brown fan since I was in elementary school...

Roppongi is already family friendly.

Roppongi is not really a place to put a chidren's attraction. Or at least, get the kids home before 4PM.
