Lost in Translation was a movie I never really got.  Just seemed a miserable and fairly jaundiced look at Japan and relationships and lonliness and all.

I always like Bill Murray. @Wakarimasen - I thought Lost in Translation was okay at best. Nevertheless, Bill is a classic and I like his movies.

Boy - could they have chosen a less flattering picture of ol' Bill for this article?

I absolutely loved Lost in Translation. A great depiction of the uncomfortable gray areas that relationships can exist in.

Thanks for that explanation. I never really got that movie myself and wondered what it was that spoke so deeply to some people. I did understand why so many friends who'd recently left Tokyo loved it. Six of us used to all live within a 15 minute walk of the Park Hyatt and would meet up at the bar there sometimes or have birthday dinners at the New York Grill, so that was nostalgic.

L in T was a great movie.

Too many people thought it was about Japan, but Japan was just the backdrop supplying a little light relief.

The melancholy, tension, alone-ness and tragedy of modern "successful" relationships was bared. The emptiness of people lives who have it all.

I'm hoping the chemistry works again with Coppola & Murray.

Sounds like it will be worth watching.

Sofia Coppola's best movie after The Virgin Suicides. And possibly Bill Murray's best. I'd put it as a companion piece to Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers. Murray's career went from screwball comedy to the sublime Groundhog Day to Wes Anderson stalwart to these perfect extended vignettes of middle-aged angst and Lost in Translation shows him as jaded, lonely, jet-lagged and out of sorts.

And whatever about Coppola's later films, she must have felt no certain amount of joy after the drubbing she received for her performance in dad's The Godfather Part III.

I'd rather save my money for the upcoming Ghost Busters with the original cast that are still alive.

Funny how you remember people as how they looked when they were younger. Ingrained in your memory I guess. High definition photography doesn't help of course. Myself included.

Kentaro - That's

"For relaxing times.... make it Suntory Times."

Cut-O! Cut-O!

Millenials will never really 'get' the movie cause its beyond the ADD crowd, it is a great film, they should make a second film

"Lost in Translation" was practically a documentary. You all realize that it was based loosely on Harrison Ford's experiences in Japan filming Kirin commercials? The game show sequence was brilliant. The moody, May-December almost love story aspect was weak. However, Scarlett Johansson's husband's retinue was spot on send up of all the less-than gaijin who who are, like Jerry Lewis in France, inexplicably "big in Japan."

Had the same experience seeing John Goodman for the first time in a while. He's lost a lot of weight and he very much looks his age these days.

Never understood foreigners (whites) who claim they are/were like rockstars in Japan. Unless you only hang out at gaijin bars with desperate women who nobody else seems to want here, I've seen hundreds of wanna be cool guys walking around Tokyo, and virtually all surrounds girls/women paying them no mind at all.
