The movies will arrive in stores Dec 2.

Not here they won't. Friends with Benefits doesn't even get a theatrical release here until next month. Backwards once again.

Wasn't Betamax developed by Sony? So shouldn't that be Sony hasn't learned?

Well right now it's Sony, Warner Bros, Universal, Paramount and Fox in one corner and Disney in the other... The odds don't look good for Disney.

For now I just hope these big companies realise that average people just want the rights to view what we've bought on the devices we have.

Hear hear.

@buggerlugs: Sony lost the Beta/VHS war because they shared technology, thinking that getting other manufacturers on the Beta bandwagon would advance the cause. Instead, companies like JVC and Matsushita took the info Sony shared and turned it into the VHS standard. Sony stood alone with Beta while everyone else lined up behind VHS. You remember how that turned out. Fadamor has it right.

Now look at the list of companies on the UltraViolet side, and the "list" of companies using KeyChest. It looks to me as though Disney is the company that hasn't learned from history.

Oh and as an after thought.... If people didn't try to make these advancements once in a while, you would be living in a cave and not reading anything, much less a news report on the internet.

Oh and as an after thought. I got the impression that the next "great tech" was 3D... That failed again just like TB. Every 30 years they pop up then disappear.

Wasn't Betamax developed by Sony? So shouldn't that be Sony hasn't learned? Steve jobs sold nothing to the devil, he did what we all dream of and succeeded where many others failed.

This system won't work because all those who invested in DVD and blu ray have already wasted enough money on systems that will be outdated in 6 months. I'm gonna hold out for holographic tv before my next big purchase. For now I just hope these big companies realise that average people just want the rights to view what we've bought on the devices we have.

Pixar most decidedly does NOT equal Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs' soul was sold to the devil years ago and his current state is just the devil collecting on the debt.

Disney bought Pixar for the simple fact that they had no answer to Pixar's excellence in 3D-animation. If you can't beat them, acquire them. A smart move on their part.

For Disney to be trying to go solo on this project, however, means they haven't learned from history. Even if their "KeyChest" turns out to be superior to "UltraViolet", there's no guarantee it will prevail. BetaMax was a visually superior video tape format to VHS, yet which one prevailed?

Disney = Pixar = Steve Jobs = Apple... you know who won when Apple went up against Sony in the last round.
