That is so sad. James was a great actor, not only for his most famous role as "Tony Soprano" but his stage performances where great as well. RIP, you will be really missed. Gone way too, soon.

Yes, very shocking and sad news.

I heard he and his wife welcomed a child into the world within the past two years. My deepest condolences to his family.

Such a loss and tragedy. I was only 58 when I had my first heart episode -- two arteries blocked 95% -- which resulted in three stents. I just thank God that I got warning signs in the form of severe angina, and not an all-out heart attack. Best wishes to his family and friends.

I enjoyed 'The Sopranos' so much; perhaps even more than 'The Wire'. Thanks for making a great show, James!

He was a great actor. . My sincere condolence goes to his friends and family who loved him very much.

James Gandolfini, passed away today while on holiday in Rome, Italy

I always stay very close to a major hospital when I go on business trip or vacation. I also carry all important medical information along with me, just in case. It did saved my the other half's life once when we were in Pebble Beach, California. Lesson learned.

Sad news, and far too young to die.

I suppose it's inevitable nowadays but I always find it a bit annoying when, on the passing of prominent figures, the story always quotes a series of "tweets" on what others think. Kind of unnecessary filler, and it always puts into my head an image of some celebrity at a cocktail party taking 20 seconds to thumb their iPhone to comment. Kind of undermines the gravity of the news.

NOOO!!! Shocker! Such a great actor. You know, I really have no doubt that the stresses of playing Tony (especially given how much he got into the part) helped put pressure on his heart. Of course, he was rather a big (or 'burly') guy, so that didn't help. Anyway, RIP. The entertainment world is the lesser for you being gone.

I really enjoyed his performances. He was also great as the enforcer/stuntman in Get Shorty.

He was a very good actor, who played such a complex character in The Sopranos with ease.

He seemed like such a gentle soul (despite apparent anger issues).

He will be greatly missed.

wake up call for all the fat people (looking at you AUS + USA) who sit on the couch watching his tv show, get out there and exercise ! shame on this fat dude for not being responsible enough to think about the 2 kids he leaves without a father!

Too bad I missed his stage performances. One of the non-perks of living in Japan- very little theater, and what there is can be hard to follow for a second language speaker with no rewind button.

Will have to rent some of his movies in tribute- don't believe I've seen him outside spronos.

A wonderful actor and one of New Jersey's most beloved sons.

Requiesce in pace, amico.

I just can't believe it. Really, when I first saw it on the Internet I was looking around to see if it was some kind of hoax. But sadly it wasn't. I watched all the episodes of Sopranos in Japan starting back in the early 00s. That show did so much for me to help me feel connected to my home country while staying in Japan for so many years. And I have JG to thank for that. This just sucks!!

From his obituary:

On August 30, 2008, after two years of dating, Gandolfini married former model Deborah Lin, who was forty years old at the time, in her hometown of Honolulu, Hawaii. Their daughter Liliana Ruth Gandolfini was born in Los Angeles, California, U.S. in October 2012.

The story omitted his eight-month-old daughter. Horribly sad.

Left **his footprints on the sands of time.
