South Korean DJ Soda reaches settlement over groping at Japan event

The disc jockey agreed to a settlement without monetary compensation as she felt the audience members had expressed remorse for the incident after receiving individual letters of apology, according to TryHard Japan.

Quite gracious of DJ Soda, and kudos for acknowledging she is coming out ahead overall in this incident.

Like with other recent egregious incidents at music events, some of these promoters need to be held liable for lapses in security and preparation.

While some online blamed DJ Soda for wearing skimpy clothes, she responded in a follow-up post that said, "No matter what clothes I wear, sexual harassment and assault cannot be justified."

She is right, and those online that blame her need to be educated!

The woman, a 21-year-old office worker from Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, admitted to touching the performer: "(I was) so happy to see DJ Soda in front of me," she said, according to the investigative sources. She told police that she had touched DJ Soda on her breasts, hugged her and kissed her shoulders.

A woman? I thought the accused were all male fans of the Korean DJ.

I saw the incident myself and think this was not a big deal at all but makes for profitable headlines for the DJ who was not at all harmed and who was the one who placed her two units in everyones face.

I am so very sick of people being so very far up in their own heads they believe that humans are not subject to the same intense responses and desires that other mammals are. We can claim all day that humans should be in total control at all times, despite all humans beings having different levels of control by DNA, upbringing, and even moment to moment events. But its not going to change reality, and it never has. Repeating mantras about how people "should behave" DESPITE the most outrageous and overt attempts to incite them have not stamped out incidents like this in all the decades the twaddle has been repeated.

And this being a concert where people have already been incited to excitement in all the usual ways concerts are, with people screaming and shrieking, jumping up and down and clapping, not only because that's totally expected at concerts, but because the main perfomers always encourage this utter loss of reason, decorum, and ordinary public restraint, only makes it FAR more likely that throwing sexual incitement at them is going to provoke a HELL of a lot more.

People will gladly stand there and say that Donald Trump is TOTALLY responsible for the incitement that caused Jan. 6, because politics, YET, when it comes to the sexual fervor that is common across the animal kingdom, suddenly the inciter bears NO RESPONSIBILITY WHATSOEVER. This is utterly farcical.

There are no guarantees, but we all know DAMN WELL, that if she chose to wear nun's robes or a burkha at all her events, the odds of this having happened to her would have completely nose-dived.

She played with fire. She got burned. She needs to either tone it down OR stay damn well away from the crowd. And my bet is, this won't happen again, because she will do the latter, and not because she or commenters here made some lofty statement about how "folks should behave".

Why is this news ?!?

While groping of women in public is a daily occurrence and non-news in Japan, it was a big news in Korea since public groping is unheard of in Korea with very strong feminism and women's rights.

Thus the outrage in Korea spilled over to Japan.

You simply can’t buy marketing like that! Smart and forgiving DJ Soda.

Oh come on, pull the other one, it can singularly one footed, tap dance, Sammy Davis Junior with Gregory Hines,  Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin simultaneously.

The three were questioned about the incident and said their actions were due to being "so happy to see her in front of me" and that they "did not mean to cause harm."...................So we thought it was OK to physically assault her, sexually. I mean, what's the harm, she only a female.

I don't know her. But its not her performance that is in question, but rather, her decision to decent the stage and interact with fans during it. Did she do that in many other places?

And if she did, I will just point out that JFK rode around in an open convertible in places besides Dallas, TX, but you don't see any U.S. presidents doing that anymore.

I will once again point to the simple fact that there are many individuals with their own DNA, unbringing and moment to moment reactions, and also add trauma and brain injury to the list. You don't rile people up and then go do a meet and greet within arms length. Eventually, luck runs out. This is not rocket surgery.

She shouldn't be allowed to assault her, but shouldn't the security guard have done a better job of responding?

It would be unthinkable in developed countries for no one to take responsibility, but that doesn't seem to be the case in Korea.

If DJ Soda has been assaulted groped molested, a criminal act/sexual assault, this is a matter to be reported to the correct police authorities, and acted upon, not to be debated, or leveraged in a tik tok, social media circus.

Yes, that is the whole point, she did not change her appearance nor performance for this event in particular, that means it was routinely possible to do it without incidents, so your criticism ends up valueless, saying that it was impossible to expect something that could be done so easily is obviously not a valid argument.

And you think that is better? you are now changing your argument and instead of being about human nature you are trying to justify letting things go worse even when it was proved to be possible to do things responsibly without problems just because. Yes, lets blame the victim and put all the responsibility of avoiding this on her, instead of blaming the actual people that acted wrongly (not only the gropers, but those that normalize this as inevitable) and recognize that the one that need to do things differently is Japan.
