Avatar and Jim Cameron's domestic box-office title are toast.

These box office figures don't allow for adjustment of higher ticket prices. If they did, would the current "Star Wars" really outearn "Avatar" or "Titanic?" How about "Gone With the Wind" in 1939? My grandmother told me that virtually every adult she knew in the town she lived in went to see it once or twice. Surely, allowing for inflation, that would be in the top 10. And what about the first "Star Wars?" Or "Jaws, "E.T.", "Jurassic Park" and so on.

I'd like to see how they all measure up, with ticket prices adjusted for inflation.

Avatar is only 6 years old so the difference in ticket prices between then and now is pretty minor (zero in Japan). A bit more for Titanic (in the US, but its also zero in Japan), but also given the sheer scale of the difference I think even adjusted for inflation this movie will far surpass the others that have gone before it.

"“When you look at the holding power of ‘Daddy’s Home’ and ‘Sisters,’ it shows you that those films are for many people the antidote to ‘Star Wars,’”

Not really. What it tells me is that Will Ferrell has a huge fan base, despite a lot of duds, and people remember the team-up with Wahlberg in The Other Guys quite well and want to see them again. I saw Star Wars already and would also like to see Daddy's Home -- not because it's an antidote, but because I like Ferrell and the moronic humor he puts into his movies sometimes.

"Box office receipts" - by their very nature - ignore things like inflation. How far back do you go? Avatar's box office wasn't adjusted for inflation, nor were any of the OTHER former record holders. You can't just decide to start counting it now.

If you were to calculate the difference for Avatar, though, you'd find that Avatar's $760.5 million (domestic) in December 2009 translates to $841.3 million at the end of 2015. So Star Wars is only about $100 million from surpassing Avatar domestically even if inflation is accounted for... and DVD/Blue Ray sales haven't even begun. Yeah I'd say Avartar's record is toast no matter how you look at it.
