What can you say? Porn sells.

Critics, including parents, politicians and women’s advocacy groups, campaigned against the cards, saying the images disrespect women and send inappropriate messages to children.

Right, because parents, politicians and women's advocacy groups are without 'guilt' themselves. Maybe IF they spent more time with their children, then their children would be better off instead of making the world conform to their personal views because they spend so much time away from their children trying to change the world.

Good to see other countries embracing Japanese culture.... does this come under the 'Cool Japan' promotional campaigns I wonder??

Business is war so some companies will do anything to make money, even ignoring corporate social responsibility.

Mind you this was a clothed picture, so what is the problem?

She has some good movies, both censored and uncensored. These girls often do events in China and Taiwan, so for sure they have followings there.

How can images of a clothed woman be porn?

2 ( +7 / -5 )

I like her face and acting skills.

I used to live in Taichung, Taiwan's 3rd largest city. Near the station were at least 5 porn DVD shops filled to the gills with J-porn.

They LOVE it over there.

I think it falls under 'Hot Japan' category

Are there no such cards in Taiwan with non-pornstar women in equally modest poses?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why, do you think the guys would rather purchase those if they were available?

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Critics had the option to offer twice face value for the cards, I doubt the vendor would have balked at that.

Life is short. Buy a swipe card.

Well, that is really nothing. Some AV stars sell out their promotional products (I'm not sure what these are called in English) in 3 or 4 minutes.

Just goes to show how worthless Cool Japan and Japanese "culture" is when the epitome of their soft power is porn.

By the way ebisen, I'd like to hear your reasoning why the lowly West "struggles with sexuality" unlike the superior Japanese culture

This is hardly surprising. When I taught at a cram school in Taiwan, 11 year old kids perceived Japan as ''cool'' and somewhat more advanced and ahead of Taiwan, as opposed to the opinions of their counterparts in mainland China. So by default it isn't surprising that most adult males would view anything from Japan, including J porn, as the epitome of sexiness. As a side note, it's funny how most western males view Japanese women as hotter than Taiwanese women. Reasons could be that Japan is more internationally recognized as a country. Interestingly, the aforementioned respondents also mentioned that Japanese women usually need make-up whereas Taiwanese women are more naturally beautiful. Hmm... At any rate perhaps Ms. Yui shouldn't have been so ''fully clothed'' if the obvious target was the adult male population of Taiwan. After all, Taiwan ain't a conservative Muslim country. Looking at the video, I'm not particularly surprised that the women were not so enthusiastic. Women hate to be compared to more esthetically pleasing women irrespective of the country. Males and females are wired differently. Even the mayor couldn't resist a giggle.

Or a matter of sophistication?

Taiwan is little Japan. I reckon they would have sold five times as many in half of the time of they did it in Japan.

@presto345. Sure, it is a matter of sophistication. Nevertheless, Shanghai, Hong Kong women have long been considered ''sophisticated'', but this is probably in comparison to less industrially advanced areas of China. What of sophistication? I know plenty of folks who love women from South East Asia, ie. Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, et al. Not exactly women whom you would consider ''sophisticated'', at the risk of sounding disingenuous. @disillusioned. Well of course Taiwan is ''little Japan''. Faced with a possible invasion from mainland China for the last 50 plus years, the country would naturally see Japan as its friendly big brother.

No one uses telephone cards in Japan anymore but they all used to have photos on them and plenty of people collected them.

Female models was one genre of the cards. A lot of them were the kind of bikini shots you see in manga and on beer posters. However, the boundary between glamour modelling and porn is frequently crossed in Japan,so I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if porn stars like Ai Iijima ended up on the cards too. I don't think it was ever seen as a big deal. Ai Iijima herself ended up on regular tv, more often than not as a social commentator. Her past wasn't seen as a massive stigma.

I think the push back comes from people who view pornography as degrading to women.

@ Black Sabbath - Those people are idiots. @ Novenachama - What is irresponsible about these cards? Children don't know who the woman is. Women who complain because they know who she is, based on the fact it is degrading or sexualizing women, or whatever feminist propaganda they spew, are morons. She made a choice to be a porn star. If any women site any feminist nonsense to oppose that, then they are not feminists. (That would be most people claiming to be feminist, btw)

Well, okay, but the cards are not pornography.

She's so beautiful. I don't care whether she was porn-star or not. I love her. It was her professional. I've no objection for printed her image on swipe car whatsoever. Good for charity.
