Slayer not my thing from what I’ve heard but I like Metallica. Great guitar work in particular.

You mean James’ rythym playing or Kirk’s leads?

Kirk’s been playing the same lead for decades now, hiding behind his distortion and wah wah effects. James, playing is a bit stiff and lacking, for my taste.

I just wonder why anyone would laugh out loud at them. Doesn’t make sense to me.

I just have a hard time taking them seriously. It’s like cartoon music for me. I will say that I think Hetfield has a great voice when he sings and doesnt do that silly growelling he usually does.

Jimizo

Dunno. Sex isn’t anything new in popular music.

The rock dinosaurs often went on stage topless or with bare chests and jeans so tight you could tell their religion. I think Jim Morrison got his knob out once.

Iggy Pop, Doors, Bowie, Prince, Elvis, others all wrote and played songs. They had substance to go with their style. Big difference.

For all these 'shock' and sexualized and romantic personas, music was/is their #1 and the rest is an add-on.

It's not that way anymore and that's why so much popular music today is trash. That and that damn unhuman autotune 'masks' up the imperfections and lack of ability in the first place. I hate it!

Snobbery.

What’s your opinion on Slayer and Metallica?

They're not everyone's cup of tea no doubt.

But they do both rank very high in terms of longevity and number of fans.

Oh yes. Respect to both of them.

By that silly definition Taylor Swift is the greatest, most gifted musician in the history of the world.

Yes, by that objective qualification, she is up there. But Madonna beats her with longevity, and I suspect probably by number of people who have been her fans as well.

By the way, objectivity can't be silly. It just is. So your opinion about my definition being silly is... silly and not objective.

She isn’t the biggest selling artist of all time.

It is too early to tell how long her music will be listened to.

Slayer and Metallica, eh? LOL.

What’s your opinion on Slayer and Metallica?

And it was in question to people like me, who more into Slayer and Metallica than Madonna.

Madonna wasn’t really my cup of tea either, but I was always able to recognize and acknowledge the quality of her music.

Slayer and Metallica, eh? LOL.

There are no other objective qualifications, only opinions. And by the above qualifications, Swift is very good, as she is listened to by an insane amount of people, and it's been that way for over a decade.

There are only two objective qualifiers that determine whether music is good or not; How many people listen to it, and how many years they keep listening to them.

Actually, by and large, they didn’t. The quality and range of Madonna’s music was never really in question.

Like a Virgin?

Vogue?

And let's remember, Swift actually plays her own music.

And it was in question to people like me, who more into Slayer and Metallica than Madonna.

Will Taylor Swift still be around as a valid force 30, 40, 50 years from now? I doubt it.

I have no doubt people said the same as you about Madonna back in the '80s.

Actually, by and large, they didn’t. The quality and range of Madonna’s music was never really in question. It’s not like that with Swift. Her songs are pretty relentlessly vapid. Btw, contrary to how the would-be hipsters on this site would have it, I’ve never come across “enraged far right wingers” ranting about her.

*Criticisms of her songs from anyone over about 30 are invalid.**

That’s absurd.

But the young people are. Criticisms of her songs from anyone over about 30 are invalid. Our heroes were the ones we liked when we were young; of course we aren't fond of her work. But only her generation counts. As it should be.

And they're the ones who'll be alive 30, 40, 50 years from now - the people who listened to her music will decide

An anti-Christian screed by Taylor Swift set to music?

Not interested.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Paul Simon said (in one of his songs) that every generation throws a hero up the pop charts, as it should be. Her songs speak to her generation, not mine, and just as my parents couldn't understand the music I was attached to when I was young, there are many here missing that point. I'm not her target audience so naturally I'm not attracted to her songs. But the young people are. Criticisms of her songs from anyone over about 30 are invalid. How come the semi-pornographic photos to sell a record? About the struggles of ( super rich) “poets”.

How come the semi-pornographic photos to sell a record?

Because she's a beautiful woman and wants to show it.

Sex doll. And her past rerecorded album, like this one comes with 4 different cover art pictures. Collect all four and stick them on your wall and.......

Her songs are vapid, mostly diss track screeds about how previous lovers weren't 'good enuf 4 her'. You can only so far with that format and formula. Look at Britney Spears, Hillary Duff, Dumb Spice Girls.

Will Taylor Swift still be around as a valid force 30, 40, 50 years from now? I doubt it. As for the record of download streamings, when the 'thrill' is gone you can just place them in your laptop's 'trash can' and empty it.

LOL Jimizo...at first I was like ?

Then I was like ?

and Jim definitely did.

Just hope our ‘real’ music aficionados can put you right on having anything good to say about Swift’s music.

They can be very informative.

Can be a bit prudish though. Some of them can get a bit upset over images of Taylor Swift with her shorts on. Should have a trigger warning.

Society going to hell in a hand basket.

I think what I like most about Taylor is how she completely freaks out all my old dinasaur rock friends!

Hey! I like the rock dinosaurs.

You need a lecture on why post-Peter Green/Peter Gabriel Fleetwood Mac/Genesis are crap,

A good talking to on the virtues of prog rock epics with shifting time signatures wouldn’t go amiss either.

100 lines in order - ‘All modern music is crap. It isn’t ‘real’ music’ on our desks by tomorrow.

I've heard several of the songs. I can't imagine why they're so popular, but props to her for her success!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

She also writes her songs, and master of her own destiny

She is the envy of any agency-controlled performer

The fact that she basically dropped TTPD as a double album is astonishing - 31 songs!. There's some great storytelling with beautifully written lyrics in this latest release of Taylor's; and it's been wonderful lounging on the sofa listening to each track and soaking up the introspective, haunting, and sometimes melancholic atmosphere the songs conjure up.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

It’s pretty amazing how completely in synch she is with her audience. Her lyrics could come straight from most of their private diaries; that’s not to say it’s easy to write those kind of songs.

I think what I like most about Taylor is how she completely freaks out all my old dinasaur rock friends! Hahaha!
