And never mind shows like 'It's a knock out' from back in the 80's (which is about to start a new season in Aust.) LOL fail TBS

Well in all fairness to those saying that Japane never copies and this is the pot calling the kettle black etc, lets look at this logically. Most TV shows these days are kind of a rip off of something else. Law and Order to CSI is a huge example. But Game shows are a bit different. Its easy to have simialr dramas or comedys, but game shows show ahve some originality. And yes this is a huge rip on Takeshis Castle which was originally aired in the 80s. I think the only reason MXC dodged the bullet is because they actually worked out a deal to re air Takeshis castle here just redubbed for added humor. Even the US version of Silent Library is a sad sad excuse of the greatness of the Japanese original

Kuru, the show is annoying and your wife has bad taste. As does my husband. That show puts me on edge as it is nothing but a bunch of ugly, unfunny 'lads' thinking they're cool.

'Takeshi's Castle' and MXC are functionally the same show. Please stop referring to them as if they're different. One is the the American version of the other. Please look it up.

Glad to hear it..... Japan has never copied any TV programs........

malfu - Sure, but only if you have absolutely nothing else to do!

Maybe it's silly.

But the fact is that a lot of Japanese TV shows are copied. Yes, the same ones the bashers whine about... so look forward to watching the English or whatever language version when you go home.

By the way, reality TV is even worse overseas so look forward to that kiddies :-)

Hide Suzuki: "Are you sure the show is on TBS ? Otherwise your comment has nothing to do with the article. Or are you one of those typical grumpy gaijin who generalize everything to the entire country ?"

Wow, someone's getting rather defensive! They say when someone gets defensive like that the person who offended them is not far off the mark.

Anyway, there ARE a few long-standing, decent shows on TV but on the whole Ivan is bang on -- most are gawd-awful. As to TBS suing the LA company, riff-raff made a valid (subtle) point in that Japan copies HEAPS of TV shows. Does it get the rights to make shows like 'Survivor' and 'Millionaire' ("finaru ansa-?")? Japan also copies some foreign films like last Japan copying, EXACTLY, the movie "Sideways" (with it taking part in Japan and with Japanese people instead, of course). With movies, though, of course, other nations often do remakes of a country's successful movies.

GW: "ok...............by that logic then shouldnt “Takeshi’s Castle,” “Most Extreme Elimination Challenge all be suing each other??????????? Too funny"

Good point!

"to shows such as “Takeshi’s Castle,” “Most Extreme Elimination Challenge” and “Ninja Warrior? So TBS is admitting that its own shows are bereft of originality. If it is similar to more than three shows, I'd say their case should be dismissed. It's on television and it's inane and vulgar. Why, that's just like our show.

yeah & jtv never copies other LOL, I have seen csi knockoffs running currently off the top of my head, Japan has long had a history of copying since the end of WWII

Umm, yes they did actually. The show's creators in the UK have made a lot of money by licensing WWTBAM all over the world.

kurumazaka - but are NTV paying for the rights to use Bond themes?

And luckily, it would appear that they are all skilled enough to continue shouting and looking perplexed throughout, regardless of who shows up. It really is unutterable shite.

Can I even watch Japanese programing in North America?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@RiffRaff.... oppps Japan has copied foreign TV shows too. I.e Family Feud, Super Laugh in, and many more.

What the hell does TBS care about ABC?? Not like people here in Japan even know what ABC is! Let alone worry that people here in Japan may view ABC instead of TBS?? Then vice a versa, Americans don't have any idea what the hell TBS is, so why the fuss??

good news!! amerikan wipeout is THE worst show i've ever seen. those gaijin suck big time. i LOVE japanese game shows only they can make those shows worth watching. even the amerikan remakes of japanese movies suck. -_-'

funny... where can you watch TBS programs in the the US... or ABC programs in Japan?

sounds a bit like Microsoft claiming a copyright on "sushi" and banning it's use in Japan...

There's some God-awful "Comedy" show on on Monday nights where, in between bouts of shouting and slapping each other on the back of the head, they play snippets of Bond themes.

I'd love to know if they've paid to use them. I can't really imaging the Ian Fleming estate being particularly eager to associate the brand with that pool of arsegravy.

@Ivan Coughanoffalot

Are you sure the show is on TBS ? Otherwise your comment has nothing to do with the article. Or are you one of those typical grumpy gaijin who generalize everything to the entire country ?
