Elvis joined the Army in 1958. The Korean War was over in 1953.

How can a movie star be a hero?

How can a movie star be a hero? Just look up when Elvis Presley had to join the army during the Korean war, but they sent him real far off, to GERMANY to just make sure he would never be hurt on the Korean peninsula, and he was a hero too, right??

Taiwan, Singapore Sweden and lots of other places make it mandatory to serve. The only fare one is Israel as they require women to do it too. However, they will allow through application civil service for a couple of years.

The horror!

@Papasmurf:
If they were forced into the JSD, they would cry without their make-up.

I have two Korean friends, one was exempt from the military draft because he had very minor and un-noticeable health problems and was made to be a tour guide, the other was healthy and I heard he went through some gruelling training. Rain may not be put in harms way but the training he will receive will be harsh.

Neo, have you seen his body? The guy is in shape and I don't doubt will be fine in boot camp.
I think mandatory training is a pretty good idea to be honest. Would give jobless grads a chance to get some experience and possibly join for life, would help straighten out some of those kids who went on the wrong path, would help with welfare and benefits... I don't think they should force anyone to serve if they don't want to in terms of war but two years of training? Why not?
Greece "asks" that men do it for a few months. If you don't, you don;t get to collect your family inheritance. Not "forced" but def an intensive.

Another one of them pseudo singer/actor?

So all Korean men must be heroes then. He's not volunteering you know.
I sometimes think Japanese men would be better off with a year or two of military service too - whip em into shape, teach them some discipline - but I'm sure Japan's neighbours (and the Japanese public) would never allow that.
shogun36
Japan needs this. First thing all men would do upon entering training is to cut off all their hair.

He surely will be missed but I am sure he won't have a plan B. Good luck and come out even better.
I believe that any country should have military service, it makes men men. And if I were a Japanese woman, I would join the Airforce and become flight attendant like my friend did and travel the world for free.

Said that how different would the USA, etc be if they still had a compulsory service/draft?
I would stake that we would have way less wars/conflics right now.
LoveNot
I love this man, he is so talented and handsome, nature gave him everything, whyall men are not like him?
NeoJamal

Back on topic please.

what took him sooo long? he should have done this when he was 18 years of age. this only shows that the korean youth won't ever escape mandatory military service.

Most Korean men I know look forward to (or did, if they're finished) their military service. Many hate it during, but most are the better for it after.
oberst
last time I heard the KATUSA serves only one year, too bad he doesn't speak good enough English to join that.

Does that include Israel where every male has to do 3yrs and women 2 yrs. Plenty more countries that still require a compulsory service for any citizen.
Personally agree with Papa(did my compulsory service(also lived in a few countries that were actively at war)). The service does change you(for the better, IMO) and gives you a perspective on war and the people serving that truly opens your eyes.
Tough to make it past basics and you can't quiet once you entered.
Finally, way too many people today that don't serve(for their citizenship) and take people that serve for granted but wouldn't do the same for their fellow citizens.
In short they became removed from wars that their countries fight and it became the same as seeing a hollywood movie on the telly.

Japangal.
Sign up. ;) Let us know your once you left.

Japangal.
Military service is NO joke once you are into it and you can't quit.
Been there, done the time and got the T, depending on country/times you might serve on the front and not come back(died) or crippled. Most recruiters tend to lie about accommodation, etc.
There is NO glory in war/etc.
Go for it.

He's a handsome fella. I hope he doesn't get his face blown off by a North Korean artillery shell.

He's actually pretty cool. Did this pretty funny skit with Steven Colbert. Wish him the best.

Go, Rain, and come back a real man!

Now who will Stephen Colbert have a feud with?

That's too bad, really. I am not a fan of Rain, but I find it sad that anyone anywhere is forced to perform a job they don't choose. In the US, that's called slavery.

Idiots like this make the wold poorer. Cry babies who blubber over this guy doning military sevice and earlier his week Steve Jobs. People thye do not even know personally. Stop the fake childish grief and use your energy on brining happiness to your loved ones and make society a better place.
