Nice post. I wasn't able to put that into words like you did, but the fact that it is a Space Opera is why I suppose I enjoyed it regardless of plot holes.

I liked the movie. And agree with most the criticism offered here. How's that? I dunnow.

Two things, though:

First, dissing E7 for not being SciFi is not really a fair criticism. The original three films and much of the fan fictions was always more space opera than sci fi. In fact, I'm happy the for all the 'faults' about The Force Awakens: time lapse plot holes, plot holes, the 'soft reboot, the family drama, SUPER REY---------!

It finally ends the debate between the Trekkies (not Trekkers! -- I don't speak Klingon!) and Star Wars fans: Star Treck is sci fi, and Star Wars is Space Opera.

Second, SUPER REY--------------------------! There seems to be be parts to this: one, that she is a woman and the other that she is Force Buffed Beyond All Recognition.

I have no problem with strong female characters, so that don't bother me at all. As for her being forced buffed, well, yeah, its awakening and all. To soon? Yeah. To much, yeah.

BUt that is the nature of operatic story telling. Its called condensing. Its as old as mythic story telling.

kchoze is spot on. I'd also add the ridiculous mega Death Star battle. Moments in "They've wiped out half our fleet!" which was only but a handful of ships to begin with! Surely a Death Star of that size would not suffer from the exact same shortcomings of the original? You bet it would! Unbelievable...

I can rant hours about that movie!

Please don't. We got the jist of your viewpoint with your FIRST sentence. The only thing you needed to say after the first sentence was, "enough said."

Personally, I hated The Force Awakens with passion. It is a lazy rehash of A New Hope, with a plot that is held together only by impossible coincidences one after the other and no sense of scale and time. And the characters? Dear god, the f-ing characters.

Rey: Mary Sue to the max, like JJ Abrams' 8-year-old fantasy "I want to live in Star Wars, I'd be better than Luke at the Force, better than Han Solo at piloting and fixing things, I'd beat Darth Vader effortlessly and I'd fly around the galaxy in the Millenium Falcon with Chewbacca at my side!"... just gender-flipped. The fact that she's a female character made a lot of people, even critics, refuse to criticize her, if Rey was a male character, he'd have been savaged in the press.

Finn: neat concept but really badly written. He doesn't act like an indoctrinated soldier but like a teenager who just crashed his dad's car and is running away from home, bumbling around like a fool.

Poe: just a pure cardboard character, a total waste of Oscar Isaac's talents. Not surprisingly, this is a character that was supposed to die in the first 15 minutes of the movie but who was miraculously and inexplicably saved.

Han Solo: all the character growth of the Original Trilogy has been eliminated, he's almost a caricature of what he was (like Kirk in Abrams' Star Trek remake).

Kylo Ren: who thought that making the main bad guy a whiny emo kid who removes his helmet when asked to by a prisoner was a good idea? And what is with that absurd "I want to be the bad guy, but the Light Side tempts me!" BS? Congratulations for killing Star Wars canon, Jar-Jar Abrams! The idea of someone WANTING to be bad and finding the Dark Side more difficult than the Light Side is a spit in the face to the very foundation of the Star Wars mythos (the Dark Side is "quicker, easier, more seductive" in the words of Yoda).

I can rant hours about that movie!

Seriously if they intended to make a parody of the original Star Wars it would be much better to make a sequel to Spaceballs.

A simple, by-the -numbers piece of fluff for mouth breathers. What a disappointment episode 7 was.

Heres hoping the next instalment is geared at least somewhat towards adults.

The neo-feminist overtones killed the experience for me. Doesn't hold a candle to the originals.

I don't need reviews to tell me about how I feel about a movie - I watch it and I have a pretty solid rating system. It goes:

-- I liked it

Or

-- I didn't

Apologies before you read this .... Charm on about Star Wars VII all you want, but it is a really bad scifi movie. It was a populist play, by JarJarAbrams and Disney for return on investment.

It was not true to the vision of Lucas (he admits by saying - selling off his 'kids to the white slavers'), and even Mark Hamill is mildly mocking it (#StillNoDialogue #RianHasMoreLinesThanMe).

I won't be silent - I love StarWars, but VII is a plot hole riddled, nostalgic dribble pool, copy rip-off of eps IV.

Here is a real review - which is on the spot / hits the Mark right on the Hamill. https://youtu.be/FNAy7yCMyBw

Personally, I loved it. I watched it again on the weekend. I'm sure I'll watch it many more times in the future as well.

I broke a 5 year cinema visiting drought to see this lame drivel. It should be on the list for the razzies.

The MTV Awards is the antithesis of the Oscars. It's fun for and voted by young people.

The force awakens: Rehash of Episode 4, but with a 2015 Politically correct mindset.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kR6x4W2P0Wk ( My Awakening Force Destiny Video ) The Force Awakens movie is the kind of movie that inspires It is our destiny to find out what we can do when we try hard The deserved these awards if the movie inspired others as much as it inspired me.

If the "Force Awakens" was the best of them, I shudder to think what the worst was.
