Actually all of the movies I want to see (except King's Speech) will probably come out in the summer in Japan.

I want to see True Grit, Black Swan, & Fighter.

Moderator: "The King's Speech" opens in Japan on Feb 26, "True Grit" on March 18, "The Fighter" on March 26 and "Black Swan" in Golden Week.

Wanna see Black Swan too. Too bad that 'Confessions', the Japanese movie didn't make it, the best movie of last year and one of the best thrillers I have ever seen.

@Foxie: If you didn't see "Akunin" ("The Villain") you haven't seen the best Japanese movie of 2010. That's the film that should have been submitted for an Oscar.

I'm literally addicted to Black Swan!!! Natalie Portman definitely deserves the Oscar for her role as Nina!!!

Cripes!! i thought it was a pretty tame movie. Rich priveleged guy overcomes a stammer? The drama!! the pathos!!

Foxie & Kawachi: "Confessions" and "Villain" were both garbage and not even worth nomination. By Japanese movie standards I guess they were a step up, but really Japan needs to stick to animation and horror if they don't want to bother upping their game in other genres.

I hadn't heard of any of these movies (Japanese aforementioned aside -- and Inception, which starts a Japanese) until now. Guess I'm too far out of the loop. Ah well, they'll likely all be out within the next two years here.

smith, did you watch "confessions?" Just which part of it was garbage? I thought Takako Matsu's acting was quite stunning. The mismatch of the music and the scenes, the camera angles, the telling of the story from several ... wait, I better not spoil the movie for those who haven't seen it.

Akunin is not garbage. It is very sad and tragic. I prefer it to any hollywood made movie.

@LoveUSA: I'm glad you agree. It was a fantastic movie and everyone I recommended it to agreed with me after seeing it.

Best movie of the year, "Exit Through the Gift Shop." Nice to see marketing has put a cartoon in the top 10! Top ten? What a ploy to make people stay and watch the awful parade of sycophants.

I also think that it was the best Japanese movie last year and should have been nominated for Oscar instead of Confessions. The story is heart wrenching. I wanted the main character to find some happiness, his life was too horrible and dreary to be true. I guess there are so many lonely people like him in Japan trying to find somebody through dating sites... the ending was so tragic and powerful... very moving and unforgettable, i wish it was not so dark. i didn't want police to discover that he was the killer, he is the only murderer whom I do not see as a murderer but a victim for whom I have sympathy and compassion.

what a narrow-minded opinion. Luckily the japanese filmmakers didn't bother with your opinion, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to see such excellent examples of psychological drama as the above mentioned Japanese movies. Recently I try to escape as much as possible from the stereotipical Holliwood movies and watch real human movies made in Asia. It is so refreshing.

FYI- The "Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences" (aka the Oscars, Academy Awards) is a private, not open to the public, organization that has several levels of dues paying membership. There are slightly more than 6,000 members (in the world) who's membership level allows them to decide who deserves an Oscar nomination and who vote for the winner.

These 6,000+ people weren't impressed with "Confessions" or thousands of other film projects that didn't get a nomination.

Keep spending "your" money to see movies that "you" want to see. I seldom agree with the Hollyweird elite, insiders and the movie industry public relations campaigns.

“This feels crazy. I don’t mean to sound like disavowing the film in any way, but it’s like, are they sure?” said “Winter’s Bone” director and co-writer Debra Granik, who earned an adapted-screenplay nomination.

I've seen Winter's Bone and thought it to be extremely well-made despite the limits of its setting and budget. It's a great film and Jennifer Lawrence certainly deserves the Oscar nomination -- although I never thought the Academy would have ever even discovered the film.

Great comments, LoveUSA!

LoveUSA, I totally agree with you. Me too, I prefer watching Asian movies lately. They are more human. Just watch Dog's Tooth and you get disgusted by humanity. Really can't understand why that got a nomination.

I guess it got nomination because it was original and technologically innovative. Disgusted by humanity? Our rule should be never do to a human being that you won't want done to yourself.

i really recommend you the movie Akunin. There are these men in the movie who cannot find real life girfriends, so they pay to women on dating sites. Once they pay the money, women treat them well, praise them and smile, it is the saddest thing in the world, praying for love and once the men get it it is fake because it is paid. And these pitiful men feel happy for 30 min in their life. This movie describes Japanese society at its best.
