'Titanic' to be re-released in 3D in Japan

James Cameron's Oscar-winning film "Titanic" will be re-released in 3D in Japan on April 7, one day after its U.S. release. The re-release worldwide is to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Titanic setting sail on April 10.

Cameron says the film was "painstakingly" converted to 3D and promises "an epic experience."

Released in 1997, "Titanic" won 11 Academy Awards and grossed more than $1.8 billion worldwide. That's second only to Cameron's "Avatar."

"This a film that many people have seen, obviously, sometimes multiple times, but there is a whole generation of people who haven't seen it in theaters," Cameron said.

"I love the 3D, I think it's spectacular. If I had had 3D cameras at the time, if there had been 3D theaters at the time, I would certainly have shot the film in 3D."

"Titanic" -- which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as star-crossed lovers aboard the ill-fated passenger steamship that struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank in 1912 -- was first released in 1997.

The film earned more than $1.8 billion worldwide and 11 Oscars including Best Picture and a Best Director statuette for Cameron.

It remained the highest-grossing film of all time until Cameron's "Avatar" shattered the record with more than $2.8 billion in worldwide receipts.

Meanwhile, "Star Wars Episode 1- The Phantom menace" will also be re-released in 3D in Japan on March 16. It is the first in George Lucas' six-film series to get the 3D treatment.

Ha ha ha, Titanic is the second highest grossing film in history with over $1.8 billion in ticket sales. Avatar, another James Cameron release, is the highest grossing film ever.

I really tried to watch Ttianic. The two times I tried, I could not go past the first 30 min.

Yet they both happen to be terrible films. Weird, isn't it? French and Saunders parody the ridiculousness of the film perfectly, Jennifer's pisstake of Kate Winslet's overwrought acting style in the movie is perfect.

"Worst film ever made"

"Never saw the movie."

Thanks for telling us that. You should, but not in 3D.

The sunset scene when they are "flying" might be worth it...

Terrible, terrible movie, mawkish, maudlin, sentimental crap.

French and Saunders' parody was infinitely superior

Cameron is certainly obsessed with the Titanic, isn't he. Not sure that the story will be any better in 3D. And there are a lot of movies where Kate gets her kit off. Even that is almost cliche...

Never saw the movie.

how about "Heat" in 3d? hollywood's coolest gun battle in 3d would be outrageous.

3 Done to Death movie

Hey, at over three hours, you don't want your Big Gulp to go soft in your hand and make the floor all sticky before the movie's even halfway through....

3D nude Kate Winslet, haha!

meh...

Sure, Neo, watching DiCaprio die a slow death was the only saving grace of the movie, but I disagree on what part would be worth watching in 3D: Kate Winslet lounging on a sofa in the buff.

The movie is 3 hours and 14 minutes long. The only way I'd spend 3 hours and 14 minutes with 3D glasses on is if they looped that scene say every ten minutes or so.

I hope they don't overprice the tickets, because the only part that's worth watching in 3D is the sinking scene near the end.

I think this will be great. A ton of care (and time, and money) was put into this 3D conversion and all under the careful eyes of its director. I don't trust theaters on the technical side of 3D presentations though, so I'll patiently wait for the 3D Blu-ray to watch at home.

Oh, goodeee! I'll be rushing to get tickets for that, NOT!

Worst film ever made, never have I been so happy to see a boat sink.

3-d glasses are too dark. Everything turns murky.

so the end of the world starts here :p

It could be re-released in 1,000,000 D and I still would not pay to see it again.

Oh God...

Hollywood is creatively bankrupt....nuff said.

Like the Nintendo 3DS.... this will also be a flop and they will lose money. 3D is highly overrated. It is something that Japanese manufacturers have sunk a lot of money into but the market is just not there.

Always trying to squeeze the last bit of money out of the SHIBORI! Chris! t when will they stop flogging this dead horse! , Titanic with cut scenes include, Titanic with DiCraprio naked, Titanic with curry and rice, Titanic in cartoon form! Pff!

I said this about 5 years ago... I think this is awesome. My heart will go on. Except this time it will not be with some bird, but my kid.

i imagine it'll mostly be water and ice that's in 3-D. i'll pass.

While I can see some scenes being pretty fantastic with the new 3D I really don't see it as the kind of movie that benefits overall from it. Plus it will be an extra 2 - 500 yen for the glasses to watch, putting it over 2000 easily. No thanks.

I thought 3D was going the way of the Dodo Bird. Sony didn't even want to pay for the glasses. Many people I know have complained more about the 3D experience more than praise. I think it should be an option but not necessarily a requirement.

Titanic is a pretty ship but the movie didn't have to be in 3D. Something like the new Top Gun would be great in 3D. IMAX will always be great but 3D, no so much. 3D should be used in short burst.

Take the new Star Tours at Tokyo Disneyland. That will be a 3D experience and it will be very cool. That's a 5 to 6 minute ride at most.

3D has come a long way since we first saw Captain E.O but even at it's best it still hurts to watch it for long periods of time.

I think the worst part of 3D movies is that the movie studios try to package as a new experience when it's really all about piracy.
