So more excuse for their collector to mislead people to pay for subscription although they don't have any Television set that can receive terrestrial broadcast.

A bit late to the game are they not?
I have been watching NHK news online since I moved to Japan. That’s the main way I keep up with the sumo competitions.
I don’t know much about Japanese laws; however, if you don’t figure out a way to show your shows online, the cost of business will become even higher.
In the US, most people watch the recent episodes of their shows online. Many companies offer their programs online. Game of Thrones had almost half of its viewers online.

If they own a smart phone they can receive the signal, and technically NHK can force someone into paying the fee because of it. There was a recent court case about this issue if I recall correctly, and NHK won.

Why is cost an issue when the streaming sites are free? I don't understand why copyright is a problem either: surely the networks own the rights to their own programmes?
Strangerland
That's not a given. It comes down to the means of distribution. They of course will have the rights to broadcast over the airwaves, but unless they have either negotiated an agreement to all rights, or specifically for redistribution through streaming, they likely will not have these rights.

Oh wow, so someday we'll be able to watch all the shows in which talento scream "Oishiii" non stop while tasting various bland dishes (ie all the shows) ....on demand?
Take my money!!!!

From someone who has worked in the industry here in Japan. Most programs aren't actually made by the companies who broadcast them. A lot of the variety television shows are produced, staffed, edited by 3rd party companies/studios who then sell them to the broadcasters. Of course there are a lot of shows that are produced in house. But most of them aren't. As such, the licensing becomes a bit more convoluted.

Zichi,
Which TV is Hiraki TV?
Did you mean Hikari TV?

Most of the TV shows here are absolutely terrible. Endless variety shows about nothing and/or scripted drama that makes you feel like you want to rip your eyes out. I often wondered, why the hell did I bother studying hard to watch TV.
First, it was 2 hour specials then 3 hour specials but now, we have 4 hour specials. Also, what is with, seeing the special "guests" watching the pre-recorded scenes ?? Are they making sure that we know they are doing their jobs ??

This is kind of good news. Not because Japanese commercial tv deserves more dissemination, but because terrestrial TV airwaves are divvied up to the chosen TV broadcasters, which creates a walled garden. It is this walled garden that gives us Johnnys and AKB and Yoshimoto and celebs on variety shows talking about their favourite thing, which is other celebs.
Viewers who get used to watching regular tv on the Net will be more likely to watch other stuff on the Net, which exists outside the walled garden. The standard pattern at the moment seems to be kids opening toys or shouty people on Youtube, but that may change.

The 5 Japanese private networks have shares in yoshimoto creating a cartel and the main cause of the mediocrity. The networks. Production companies, talent agencies are all run by oyajis or people without any business knowledge.

which will begin simultaneous online streaming of its terrestrial broadcast channels by March 2020
I seriously cannot wait till it's 2020. No, not because of the Olympics, but because I am sick and tired of hearing that everything and anything is designed to take place in 2020.
If it can be done now, just do it!!! who cares if its 2019 or 2021?
