Stars from the worlds of hip-hop and opera will take the stage of Tokyo American Club on May 20 as part of a musical extravaganza to raise funds for victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Jammin’ for Japan, emceed by Lisle Wilkerson, will feature the rapper Speech, from American hip-hop act Arrested Development. “It’s exciting to be back in Japan, and to be part of such an important event makes the trip that much more endearing to me,” says the rapper, who has performed on such hits as “Mr Wendal” and “Tennessee.”
The evening will also feature Japanese-American tenor John Ken Nuzzo, an award-winning opera singer based in Tokyo. “I am so glad I can be a part of this event at TAC,” he says
Also performing will be Steve Gardner and the Jericho Road Show with Nashville's Bill Steber, the Mike Price Jazz Band with song stylists Harvey Thompson & Andrea Hopkins, and Mori Yasumasa, better known as J'Elvis.
Attendees at the philanthropic evening will enjoy an exquisite dinner, an outstanding lineup of artists, a fantastic array of auction and raffle prizes and the chance to meet the performers at a VIP reception before the concert, which will be staged in the New York Ballroom of the Club’s new facility in Azabudai.
Tickets for club members cost 20,000 yen (VIP reception: 25,000 yen) and for non-members, 22,000 yen (VIP reception: 30,000 yen). For more information on Jammin’ for Japan, e-mailwg@tac-club.org

Hip hop and opera??! That`s going to be an interesting mix of attendees.

Isn't it a little late?..others have already done it.

Really? Do you think that there is a time limit on raising money? Or simply that you should only try and raise money in a unique manner?
Honestly I'm a bit confused by your post. The people in the north still need help and the more events that are done, the better.

With a $30,000 per year membership, I'm surprised the TAC can't put together a better line-up.

If you want to support The quake effort, head to the St. Mary's International School in Setagaya on Saturday. 100% of the money will go to the effort, without anything going to admin costs. I am going. Always have great food booths.

@combinibento, What? That is the entrance cost not the annual fee. It's on the TAC website if you bother to research.
Anyway, this event is open to the public and moneys go to charity. Therefore attending this over priced concert is like giving a donation to Tohoku. Unlike a cash giveaway donation, at least you can see a concert in return.

I stand corrected. In that case, I'm sure members who paid the $30,000 entrance fee will be perfectly satisfied watching "J'Elvis" perform. Seriously though, I am by no means knocking the good intentions of this event.

What is a "song stylist"?

Sorry, the "entrance fee" is a year's salary of the average 35 year old in Japan? Does that at least include the first year's membership? Or is it just registration?
Heda_Madness
It's from 20,000 YEN to 30,000 YEN

We're talking about joining the club as a member, not the ticket price.

Hey, it sounds like a good idea. I wonder if the YCC is going to follow suit?
JohnBecker
Clearly, they're not looking for average people to join.

Someone with a reasonable voice but no creativity.
A welcome gesture from the TAC but given the financial and personnel resources available to the club you can understand why some might question why it took them so long to get something together.
