TV dramas for autumn compete for women viewers

Ten new TV dramas started for the autumn season over the past couple of weeks, competing for women viewers aged between 35 and 49 who are their main audiences, weekly magazine Sunday Mainichi reports.

The new dramas, which are mostly about women who are unhappy with their relationships or jobs, star not only popular idols and actresses but also more handsome actors than usually appear, the magazine reports.

“Ryusei no Kizuna” (TBS) and “Innocent Love” (Fuji) are stories about young people trying to overcome the death of loved ones. Meanwhile, “OL Nippon” (NTV) and “Scandal” (TBS), portray female office workers in trouble at the workplace and scandalous relationships.

Because ad revenue has been declining among TV stations, new dramas are facing financial issues. To attract their main female audiences, producers are making efforts to feature attractive stars to drive up ratings. The magazine also points out that TV stations foresee making big-screen versions of their dramas as potential revenue sources.

They all have the same script and same plot. Boring script and no plot. Also the same dank and dark home the story is set in. There is no drama in the dorama.

Who thinks up this stuff?

TV shows must be the only emotional outlet for middle aged J-women stuck with the typical J-middle aged man. If they didn't have this outlet you would read more about middle aged J-husbands getting poisoned.

J-women rise up demand more in life! You deserve more.

Yeah I'm tired of watching all those dramas with unattractive tarentos!

What I find amusing about these shows is that the OLs portrayed in them always seem to live in spacious apartments with Western-style kitchens.

They should make some shows about people ( not just good looking women) who are struggling and floundering within a restrictive society. Each episode should critique some of the current social ills in Japan, and foster open discussion. Each star can be either a positive role model for the working poor, or a baddie who none want to be like. Mind you, at least these shows are an improvement on all the variety/ cooking/travel shows. I'm so sick of seeing the same pathetic faces on every channel talking about the same thing and squealing UMAII, or KAWAII, or YABAIIII.
