At first I thought this was talking about Japan - "lucrative TV industry' in Japan, not likely.

Breaks my crocodile heart. People making huge money whilst others just sit mindlessly in front of the boob tube hours / days on end. The internet won't necessarily change that, but maybe more creativity, less PC programs will air. Nothing wrong with PC, but it has its time and place. Besides, how many opinions do these stations really reflect of society?

I say GOOD!!! Since moving to Japan my TV consumption has plummeted about 90+% & its a GOOD thing!

I was always sick & tired of tv companies TELLING me what I could watch & how much to pay, so I just opted out of that crap ages ago!

Now I just watch bits of tv rent some flicks & I am good, I CHOOSE what I want to watch.

Since the net has become stronger & its easier to transmit & receive things its clear that traditional tv is TOAST!

I aint shedding any tears for them!

The only way Japanese entertainers go off the air is by dying. I was watching NHK the other day and felt I was in a time warp, watching Maekawa Kiyoshi, Fuse Akira, Wada Akiko, Yashiro Aki, etc. --- the same people I used to see in the 1970s. Pure retro!

GW: I agree. Now the ONLY time I watch TV broadcasts is kind of off-hand while I'm at the gym on the exercise bikes or the treadmill, or at a friend's house if visiting and they are watching TV. It is absolute garbage and I don't miss it, especially with all the ridiculous (occasionally fun, I'll admit) Japanese commercials and the crappy programming here. I do occasionally watch something on YouTube or another streaming service, though, if it's a decent Western program. I have saved a LOT of money since canceling my cable package, and refuse to pay NHK as I don't have a TV (and am NOT going to pay for having a computer and/or smart phone!).

Amazon has just signed on the ex-Top Gear trio for $250m for a 3-year deal. THIS is the future of TV. Only paying for the content you want when you want it. The sooner free-to-air goes the way of the dinosaur, the better. Enjoy those re-runs!

So, if it is not a whole lot of subscribers to break even, then drop costs and make some money through new sign ups.

Japanese TV is unbelievably awful and and dying a slow, tedious death, yet no one in the industry wants to do anything about it so the status quo remains and it's the viewer who suffers.
